i was curious if anybody could point me in the right
direction of a photo archive i found about 6 months ago that
was maintained by possibly a german or russian fellow that
photographs many shows around the NYC area. mostly at the
tonic from what i can gather out of my memory. i remember
the url having something like ...downtown.com? if you know
what im talking about i would be forever grateful if you
sent me the link. i've been searching and searching to find
this elusive site once again.
also i must second coltrane's 'sun ship' as a catalyst
towards my appreciation of his music. i had the obvious a
love supreme in my collection, but it did not strike me
quite as much as 'sun ship' did the first time i heard it.
theres a bass solo very late in the disc that makes me
shiver each time i hear it.
what i find very hard, as a relatively new person to jazz,
is that there is such an abundance of recordings that its
very hard to pick a beginning spot. so i find it nice that
these arguements of "miles sucks or yeah miles!" occur
because i can create an idea of what to check out. though i
must admit i am not much of a miles fan, while many of my
friends are. i just cant find what everyone cherishes and
speaks about with my own ears. but i wont deny that he's an
amazing musician because he obviously is.

The bassist is Steve Swallow and, indeed, it is a good one. As usual many
reprises of themes from earlier works, mainly "Hue and Cry", a disc that
I was glad to hear someone here praise as their favorite among Bobby's
work. As on the earlier "Pushing The Envelope" Ehrlich is on his
less-seldom heard tenor, and Anderson and Horvitz are in fine form as
well. Swallow is relegated to a largely subliminal role in the mix, a
minor quibble compared to the hack job done in the mixing of Ehrlich's
own (otherwise beautiful) "Song", and enja release from last year.
If you received the promo release the cover art does indeed suck, and
doesn't give a clue as to what exactly is Joe Bowie's contribution here.
I had to check out the press release for any info on that. In light of
the 9/11 events, the exploding building graphics have been replaced and a
.jpg of the re-worked cover art is available.
Now, over to Steve Smith for a proper review....

That review was as proper as anything I could write at the moment, and I'm
with you as to the disc's good points. If it didn't blow me away, it's
because A) it's a pretty low key blowing record by Bobby's standards, at
least as regards compositional rigor, and B) I'm much more absorbed at the
moment by his new Tzadik disc, which really does fully realize the Miro
pieces more than the live demo from the UK tour did.
