A few months ago, I asked for the list for reviews on O'Rourke's album
"Insignificance" (Drag City, 2001). I think there was one or two posters
who had heard the album and gave it a thumbs down. Based on this
information, I did not purchase it. However, since that time I have had
the opportunity to hear it and, in its defense, I have to say that it is
not at all a wretched record. A couple of the songs are nice and
marginally catchy pop songs. The chief flaw of the record is that it is a
relatively pale imitation of "Bad Timing" released three or four years
earlier. =20
That said, I maintained some interest in O'Rourke's most recent record
because (i) it's not a pop song, (ii) he doesn't sing on it, and (iii) it
has a nice title. So here is a review.
Label:MEGO 050
Artist: Jim O=B4Rourke
Title: I=B4m Happy, And I=B4m Singing, And a 1,2,3,4
Release: January, 2002
To my knowledge, I don't think I have a solo computer record by anyone. It
seems that those records just aren't my cup of tea. However, I have
listened to this album four or five times since I have had it all the way
through (an unprecedented event for me with this sort of record). It's
very listenable, very accessible, and sort of fun. To be honest, I was
afraid that a solo computer album was going to have a lot of digital
gadgetry that may be pressing the frontiers of experimental music but is
dull to sit down and listen to for 40 minutes. So, I was pleasantly
surprised at the musical extent of all three tracks. Very musical, very
melodic (given the fact that its a solo computer project). This cd harkens
back to O'Rourke's earlier composer days, which were fine and enlightening
days indeed. Here I am thinking of "A Young Person's Guide To Drowning" on
"Disengage" (Staaltape/Korm Plastics, STCD 048/KP 4294, 1992) & "Scend"
(Divided, DIV01, 1992). =20
To better explain what I am getting at, I should compare "I=B4m Happy, And
I=B4m Singing, And a 1,2,3,4" to "The Magic Sound of Fenno'Berg" (Mego 031),
which also was released on Mego in 1999, which featured O'Rourke, Christian
Fennesz, and Peter Rehberg, and which I have never made it all the way
through. That record is a pastiche of gimmicky computer bits that is
totally uninteresting to me. So, if you thought "The Magic Sound of
Fenno'Berg" was a very fine record (and there have been many positive
things said of it on this list) then bear in mind that "I=B4m Happy, And I=
=B4m
Singing, And a 1,2,3,4" isn't much like it.
That's all.

I recently got my hands on a copy of
Caroline Records C 1518 Guitar solos 2
Derek Bailey/Fred Frith/G.F. Fitzgerald/Hans Reichel
All tracks recorded in December 1975 or January 1976.
It is a very fine record but one peculiar thing is that
three of these four guitarists are luminaries in their
field and the other I have never heard of outside this
record. Does anyone know who G.F. Fitzgerald is/was
and how he came to be on a compilation with these other
three superstars?

Jeez, winks and grins are a little difficult to communicate over e-mail.
Don't scare the guy off!
I've only had the chance to listen to "Songbird Suite" once, so I can't say
very much. But Ikue Mori plays on 3 tracks. The album sounds very... [gropes
for word] ...fragile, in a way, with lots of cymbals and wisps of violin.
I almost wrote that it was psychically reminiscent of, um, "Vespertine," but
I didn't want to incur the wrath of Skip and Efren. =)
But "Songbird Suite" is in marked contrast, I think, to "Radiance" (also
mostly with piano and violin, but with Charles Burnham and Cooper-Moore),
which has a more muscular, aggressive sound to it. And the best cover of
Hendrix's "Up from the Skies" since Rickie Lee Jones's on "Pop Pop."

Anytime there's a bad cover of Hendrix -- Ribot's "Wind Cries Mary" or
Byron's "If Six Was Nine" from someone I respect, I get pissed off, because
while I avoided listening to Hendrix like the plague when I was coming up,
the guy's songwriting is inescapable.
My fav Hendrix covers -- the Rickie Lee among them (POP POP as a whole was
just great), as well as a gorgeous bootleg of Stevie Ray Vaughan playing
"Little Wing" solo (accoustic twelve string no less).

Part of the late '60s Canterbury jazz-rock scene, had a band with Geoff
Leigh (flute & sax player later in Henry Cow, hence the Frith connection)
called Mouseproof, did a solo album with the same name that also featured
underrated sax player Lyn Dobson (later in Soft Machine); I thought
Cuneiform was supposed to put out a new record by him?

I suspect Hans Reichel would be very disturbed when you called him a
superstar. As for Fred Frith, he was in the top 40 once, he arranged Robert
Wyatt's I'm a believer single.

On early Henry Cow albums with Fred Frith you can just hear echoes of
Zappa's Burnt Weany Sandwich, Uncle Meat and Weasels Ripped My Flesh
concepts. Part of Frith comes from early Zappa, but ofcourse he drew from
innumerable other sources to enrichen his work.
Frith's tendency to release orchestra stuff in later life might even point
to a similar development (both Zappa and Frith are autodidacts).
In the movie STEP ACROSS THE BORDER, Frith talks about the total and utter
Beatles obsession he had when he was young. Now there's an influence I
wouldn't come up with when listening to Frith!
As for Zorn, in managing Tzadik, he is just as witty and commercial as Zappa
was: both created a great, recognisable brand, where musically everything
could happen.
In both cases, especially compared to other contemporary composers, their
stuff sells fairly well. Zorn maybe somewhat less than Zappa. But then
again, both Zorns own output, as well as the complete Tzadik catalogue, are
much bigger than Zappa's output as a leader and producer.

Susie Ibarra belongs to the group of musicians around David S. Ware, Matthew
Ship and William Parker.
Check out the record label she runs with her husband, saxofonist Assif
Tsahar. Ibarra is mainly a free jazz drummer, although her duo record with
Tsahar 'Home Cookin' makes good use of all kinds of instruments laying
around the Ibarra/Tsahar house.
May, in a few years, the young Ibarra/ Tsahar couple get two or three kids:
I would surely buy their family cd-album.

I believe this has been discussed before. There's an excellent compilation
of Viansongs by various interpreters (including Vian himself). The box
exists of 6 cd's. One of them contains "Chansons Rock" with a.o. Henri
Salvador (using the name Henry Cording for the occasion). Vian and Salvador
composed in a nick of time lot of rocksongs after they heard this kind of
music on import lp's. They laughed their heads off and just couldn't believe
this was meant to be serious. Needless to say that songs and texts are very
funny. The box appeared on Polygram and is still available. When you read
French you should also get the book "Chansons" (Ed. Christian Bourgois)
which contains all songtexts Vian has written.
