Kinda quirky, but very sweet. Some Monk influence (natch), 50s Sun Ra
influnce (ditto), and a daringly intelligent but never clever-clever sense
of how to write inobvious melodies and chord progressions. The ballads are
breathtaking but never cloyingly sentimental. And the up tunes are so
exuberent and mischevious. Playing this record always makes me feel better
about the world.
I fell odd describing it, because Terry is a close friend of mine, but I
will say this about it and shut up: Everything I like about Terry personally
(which is a lot) is represented by TERRIBLE.

Subject: the gift/ k8/ tosco tango orchestra/ 'bootlegs'
hello all-
i am not a consistent poster here but i do thoroughly enjoy
the intellectual conversation about music and the massive
amounts of recommendations, while many are very new and
unfamiliar to me i do actively search out them. thats why
with the recent rash of 'fire bombings,' i feel as those i
should speak up and voice my opinion.
k8 or kate, what your doing is extremely selfish. as a
fellow studying artist and very young person (below drinking
age ill leave it at that), there is no reason you should
subject the whole list to your experiments in
'conversation.' art like music is a an audience oriented
field of expression and if there is not a demand from the
audience to participate then there is no reason and
ultimately no useful outcome on your part, other then
frustration and well established list members leaving. you
could get in a whole arguement about this as well but i
thoroughly believe if the subjected do not want to
participate then there is no reason to further pursue the
initial objective of 'conversation.' if it is conversation
you crave i recommend, like the others, keeping it to music.
you seem like a very well trained musician/artist so imagine
you have a lot to share concerning musical concepts and it
looks as though your doing that as of the last day or more.
so maybe this whole rant is pointless but like i said i felt
like i should share my opinion.
as for the gift... it was my first introduction to zorn. im
still fairly oblivious to many of mr. zorn's projects but
with the help of a couple great people on this list, i have
been pointed in the right direction. the gift really opened
my ears and i have it to thank for making me actively pursue
other forms of music that i never imagined listening to
before. like reviews have said, "the gift is an album you
can play for your mother," which i find to be very true. i
have since turned many people onto his projects. not being a
musician i cant comment on the REAL musical content but i
feel as though its a very intelligent and well executed
piece. and who can argue with mr. ribot's wild surf riffs?
before i finish up this already bulging email i have a few
questions or i guess recommendations on my part. has anybody
heard the 'tosco tango orchestra' from austin,tx? a friend
sent me a copy of the soundtrack to richard linklater's film
"waking life" today and they are the group under glover
gil's control that does the whole soundtrack. its some
really wild stuff and i could best describe the tracks i've
heard so far as 'classical meets jazz meets avant garde.' i
really enjoy it so far and would recommend it to others.
also does anybody have more information on the group? i cant
seem to find anything online other then 'waking life'
reviews that mention the soundtrack.
as for 'bootlegs,' i have quite a amount that i have
acquired over the last several months from numerous sources.
just about everything is out there, you just have to search
it out. i will gladly spin off some when i have a chance in
the coming month or more to some people. until then id
recommend checking out db.etree.org, there is plenty of zorn
material listed there.
thanks for reading and best wishes to all.

I'm assuming folks are referring to the
Zorn (sax, natch), Ben Goldberg (clarinet),
Trevor Dunn (bass), and Kenny Wolleson (drums)
incarnation of Masada. I saw them a couple of
times, and was blown away. Having a clarinet
instead of the trumpet gave it more of a
klezmer feel to these admittedly untrained
ears. And it rocked my world!
Sadly, I've never heard any recordings of
that line up.

Sadly, there are not enough recordings of Ben Goldberg, period. I wish
someone had recorded the duet gig he & Ellery did a few yrs back in
Berkeley.

Phewww, finally am up to date on
the zorn-list. I have a lot to
say, but I'm gonna keep it brief
anyway (for now...yes, that's a
threat :)
First, so very glad to Steve Smith
is back with us. I'm also glad to
see (for the most part), that
things have mellowed out.
Second (if I may steal from Kurt)
"hard and fast exchange of opinions
-- thoughtful, off-the-cuff, or
ill-informed -- are welcome here."
Third, Personal Attacks are not
acceptable on the zorn-list. Period.
First offense gets a warning, second
offense and I take you off the list
(just because I've never done it
before doesn't mean I won't in the
future).
I will not give warnings for previous
offenses, except for Jeton. The level
and intensity of his attacks deserve
a warning.
Any comments or flames, please send
them to me privately.

a personal nitpick, the zorn-list is a mailing
list not a listserv. Listserv is one brand of
software used to run mailing lists. This
mailing list is run on Majordomo, and will soon
be transitioned to Mailman.

Sure the record is Beatlesque, but am I wrong in hearing the piano solo in
"Yes Yes Yes" from NRBQ's "Yankee Stadium" record as a Thelonius Monk
imitation?

As a *BIG* fan of Curlew, as well as their record label, I respectly
disagree. For my money, "Paradise", their first post Tom Cora album, is the
best album they ever made.
They have indeed been in existence for over 20 years, and their music most
certainly does fit into the style of music discussed on this list and they
certainly were part of the "downtown scene". I am no longer surprised, but
still a little dissapointed that they are so little discussed here.
Anyway, anyone wanting to hear their music can listen to streaming RealAudio
