  58. I'm not a musician, but I find Zorn one of the most
  59. engaging sax players currently. I'm not sure whether
  60. his technique is as good as I think or not, but what
  61. I'm sure of is that he's entertaining and
  62. expressionistic, to say the least, which is a lot for
  63. me. Maybe "entertaining" isn't a good adjective but
  64. I'd certainly apply it to players like Joey Baron, Jim
  65. Black, Marc Ribot and some others from this whole "new
  66. generation" (yes, Zorn is becoming an old cat yet).
  67. BTW, Skip, I would have never said that Baron is an
  68. assymetrical drummer. IMHO, his technique is
  69. absolutely amazing, astounding. Yesterday night I was
  70. watching a Masada bootleg from a performance in BCN
  71. and I just couldn't believe how Baron manages to make
  72. everything seem simple in execution and extremely
  73. colorful at the same time. When I first listened to
  74. NC, I couldn't help imagining a guy just freaking out
  75. behind his drumset, sort of suffering. But then comes
  76. this guy, just sitting there, smiling, having a good
  77. time and trying to ENTERTAIN, which should be the
  78. purpose in the end and I just couldn't believe it.
  79. I really think Jim Black IS assymetrical (not to
  80. mention Han Bennink, of course)

  83. I listened to an statement from Evan Parker on Zorn's
  84. playing in which he regarded JZ as the only really
  85. contemporary saxophone player he knew, meaning that
  86. his own performances and those of many others' always
  87. looked towards the past, while Zorn's does it right
  88. the other way round, or at least, using a language
  89. that's mainly rooted in the present. However,
  90. listening to some fragments of Anthony Braxton's "For
  91. Alto" shed some light on this (a bit) exaggerated
  92. consideration from Parker. Who doesn't look at the
  93. past once in a while?

  145. I can't believe it either. That's a sin, Pat, an
  146. unforgivable one! I had the chance to see him playing
  147. solo last February and I was sitting there dumbfounded
  148. for two hours in a packed theatre (his first solo show
  149. in BCN was attended by 12 people!). Read that review
  150. and cry!! :-)

  163. Removing Douglas' parts? As I've said repeatedly, I'm
  164. not a musician and probably my conception of what a
  165. good player is supposed to be is not exactly accurate
  166. or legitimate, but I love Douglas in every context he
  167. performs (maybe not that much when he gets too
  168. classic, though) and Masada would be one of those
  169. contexts in which I find him most inspired, together
  170. with his Tiny Bell Trio and the lovely, amazing
  171. "Witness" album.

  332. them... Couldn't get into it.

  482. Two 1998 tapes of Radio shows exist, from Dutch Radio 4: two sets from one show. I believe it was either in the Sju-huis Utrecht, or the Bimhuis, Amsterdam. Zorn was there, but didn't play. I recall it was much more busy (more people playing at once) than the first Bar Kokhba disc.

There's a recording of Bar Kokhba from the Barbican, London 2000 that originally was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. I'm not near it at present, but IIRC the line up was Ribot, Baron, Baptista, Cohen, Feldman, Friedlander. Zorn directed crouched down in front of the stage. They also broadcast most of the Masada set from that night, but not the String Trio stuff (anyone?).

  681. Let me try a wild guess: if her composition fails to create any interest, 
  682. she can claim that the artistic value of her piece is simply unreachable to
  683. a human audience (there is still some room for E.T.), not due to stupidity
  684. but simply to a fundamental weakness of the human mind (due to its 
  685. incompleteness). As a result, everybody is happy: the misunderstood 
  686. artist (since the theorem proves that there are pieces of art that cannot
  687. reach an audience not because they are bad, but due to a fundamental 
  688. limitation of the human mind) and the clueless audience (since their fear
  689. of not getting it is unfounded -- what can you do against a fundamental
  690. logical limitation?) :-).

  692. The great thing with zealous metaphoric interpretations of deep technical 
  693. points/theories, is that you can make say anything you want. What's next?
