It's true that Sparks hasn't always been consistant, but even in
their weak releases there are some gems.  It has been a dream of mine
that Zorn would do a tribute album to them - basically because their
melodies are very strong and I feel that there is room for different
type of arrangements or views on their music.

For sure there 'Island' releases were their masterpieces - but in my
opinion they're still doing interesting work.  Now they are sort of
techno-pop with an eccentric edge.  Also they are one of those bands
that never really comfortably fit into a specific era.  In a way I
consider them 'outside' artists - although they are totally pop.

On the Zorn/label front, I am always interested in hearing reviews of
music released by his label.  Is (are) there a website or publication
(besides Wire) that consistently gives objective reviews of his
releases (and the other artists on the label) as they are being
released?

Phish bassist Mike Gordon will appear at the Knitting Factory in New York
on February 7, during a special evening hosted by DJ Logic.  (This is one
of 28 February nights scheduled to celebrate the venue's 15th
anniversary.)

DJ Logic will kick off the show with a set of "Trios" sets -- 4 trios of
DJ Logic plus two special guests, with each group playing for about 20
minutes.  Confirmed trio guests include Gordon, John Medeski, Charlie
Hunter, Christian McBride, Billy Martin, and Rob Wasserman.  (More guests
TBA.)

Project Logic, DJ Logic's regular touring outfit, will perform the late
show.

a coupla brief reactions: I also saw all 4 Ornette gigs at Lincoln Center
back in '97, and while I thought the "Skys in America" piece suffered from
the stiff accuracy of Masur's Philharmonic, I happened to greatly enjoy the
*almost* train-wreck of Lou n Laurie on stage. In fact, it happens to have
been one of my favourite Laurie Anderson performances ever. It was thrilling
to hear *what she did* that nite, regardless of how consistent it was with
her general ouevre. Frankly, I'll take one person doing something truly
transcendent and beyond themselves in the midst of a chaotic big-band wreck
over the more efficient 'organization' of something like Naked City anyday.
(it happens that I like NC is slices n segments anyway...). reminds me of
Alan Silva on synth, playing with a big band at Vision Festival 4 (was it
the Arkestra? i ferget so soon...). He was wayyyyyy too loud for some
people, knew it, and worked it, so that often his lines rivaled the rest of
the group. it was arrogant, it occasionally drowned out some glorious
playing, AND SO FUKN WHAT? IT SOUNDED AWESOME.....

also, on a list that often suffers from hellacious "i'm so smart"
- -constipation, a bit of Tangelo-ism is wonderful to break things up a bit.

btw, who likes blood oranges? i think the italian ones r best

more complex in flavor than the organic healthfood store variety, and when u
took the peel n pith off, from 3 feet away u could scare people into
thinking yer eating raw beef....:)

There are quite a number of small labels in just about every genre that
do not send promos unless it is worth their while, meaning that they
know it will get listed on a top 20 list for a station, either for full
rotation or for a specific genre (ie jazz, metal, industrial,
whatever).  Some labels refuse to deal with college stations simply
because the turnover of staff and tastes is so fast and so subject to
what the popular underground thing is.  I worked really hard in college
to get some particular electronic labels to send things to us, only to
have the pd call me 6 months after I left for help in getting back on
their list.
    Also understand that labels like Tzadik have a very specific audience,
and they don't have "bigtime" acts to help supplement their income and
pay for the more interesting projects.  They know who their audience is,
and focus on that.  To do otherwise would be a waste of their money.
    I would try contacting them direct, but just be ready to justify to
them why they should give you free promos.  You might do better by
asking to buy them at cost.  Of course, there's always the internet and
MP3s.  Occasionally you can find things there, and if you have a studio
it's easy to transfer MP3s to cassette or another medium to play on-air.

damn, i made my 'constipated' comment while reading an earlier digest, n i
missed Jon's announcement he's leaving the list. a pity, that ass-backed-up
comment was meant for him most. I always read (most) of the list even when i
lack time/carpal tunnel strength to answer.  I get into arguments once in a
blue, and I'll throw heavy (or only seemingly heavy) accusations and
characterizations around as i see fit, BUT (someone correct me IIW) I never
find myself simply unloading condescending insults n comments to people i
disagree with the way ersty-jon often does, even to the point of
(seriously?) putting down people's spelling n grammar 'errors' (a fool's
errand in e-munications!)

u gave more to the list than me by far, jonny, but i'm NOT sorry to see you

Is it possible that the end times are upon us, or that
a couple list members have simultaneously forgotten to
take their medication?  Why are the cartoon-loud
postings of a couple "members" of this community
suddenly so prevalent?  All the quoted above from a
"member" who recently, loudly abused our (nonpresent)
list administrator---- who has given god knows how
much time to keeping this list running, for all of us
to enjoy----based on an insanely paranoid conspiracy
theory.  How typical that a couple dull, loud, poison
apples would ruin this list and chase off SUBSTANTIAL
contributors who have better things to do than
cultivate a spectral digital persona and scrape up 15
seconds of notoriety.
