Hi!
Yes Pat, there were two themes by Slan in "Live at The Knitting Factory Vol.
3" (KFWorks- Enemy, 90)
I also think that Zorn probably made some appeareances in the U.K before
1990. His recorded collaborations with Bailey go back to at least 1981, with
"Improvised Music New York" and he visited Spain in May of 1990 to perform
Alex North's compositions. I can't believe he didn't visit Great Britain
first :). He also participated in the 87' edition of October Meeting in
Holland with Total Loss, performing MIsha Mengelberg's pieces.

Femi Kuti was just here in New Orleans. Terrific performer, charismatic
vocalist -- wisely just played sax here and there. The band was wonderful,
actually made me forget I was in a House of Blues part of the time. However,
the mix didn't really leave quite enough room for Femi's vocals, so some of
the lyrics got lost. His first album (first U.S. album?) didn't do much
for me, but I may check out the second now.... Anybody heard it?

i haven't full digested it, but the bits i've heard around the office here
sounded pretty good. The first album didn't do much for me either. This
new one sounds more "Fela" than the first one, which is a good thing, in my
opinion. sean

Other folks have already confirmed this, but I wanted to direct your
attention to this web page--and the photos in particular:
http://www.thedormgroup.com/rhodridavies/rhodridavies.htm
There does appear to be another Rhodri Davies out there, attending the
University of Manchester. That's nothing compared to the hundreds of
Mats Gustafssons there are on the planet.

a) i like fela's sax playing and never thought there was much problem w/
technique. but what do i know about playing the sax ...
b) i never thought laswell was technically the greatest bass player, and am
not a fan (to put it lightly) of a lot of what he has done, especially some
of his production (not all, though).
but, as far as things he has been involved w/ in one capacity or another
that i think are great:
blind idiot god - cyclotron CD (a masterpiece)
last exit - s/t CD (also a masterpiece), noise of trouble CD
several henry threadgill CDs
first golden palominos album
massacre - 'legs', 'bones'
herbie hancock - 'rockit'
sonny sharrock - ask the ages CD
zorn - archery
laswell/mick harris - somnific flux
appearances on crooklyn dub consortium CDs
etc.
also, i find the word "emotion" to be a curious choice especially
considering that (at least to my ears) so much of the laptop/"dangerous
improv" stuff is lacking precisely that quality. to each his own.

Hi all,
In the past I have see others request advice on cool music related
sites/shops and venues to check out while on holiday.
I am hoping some people may choose to give me their spin on sights and
sounds of Tokyo and Rome, from the avant-garde music enthusiast point of
view.
Also any little tips that might make a relatively innocent Australian lad's
adventure that little bit more memorable or simple would also be greatly
appreciated.
Oh, and also if anyone is interested in meeting up, and giving a personal
tour. how could I refuse..
Keep in mind I will be in Tokyo for only 24 hours, but in Rome for 14 days.

Along with Massacre, this was the group where Laswell was able to transcend
his limitations on the bass; I would also recommend 'Headfirst Into The
Flames' as the Last Exit album that features good playing AND sound...

well, I like some of the records that William mentioned, particularly
Cyclotron, and I'd forgotten entirely that Laswell was involved in Archery.
I'd still rather own any two Fela discs than Laswell's whole catalog, though,
if I was forced to choose.
maybe my choice of words, emotion vs. technique, wasn't quite right. a large
percentage of Laswell's work seems half-assed and superficial to my ears, and
his attitude towards consumers, with constant repackaging of the same
material, not to mention the same groove, is condescending at best. for him
to talk smack about Fela, one of the greatest artists of the last thirty
years in my mind, is pretty ridiculous/hilarious.
<<i find the word "emotion" to be a curious choice especially

I think there's plenty of emotion there, as well as personal expression. it's
just subtler and expressed in a different manner. it's certainly typically
not overtly expressionistic, however, I can agree with that. nevertheless,
it's as personal a music as anything coming out of the jazz tradition,
although possibly not always as immediate an experience.

They were called "Slan".
I've never seen them live, and there's no album available.
They did however appear on a Knitting Factory compilation. (Was it "Live at
the
K.F. Vol. 3"?)

There was also a Knitting Factory tour in the states about the time of
that compilation release. I saw the San Francisco date and it was the 1st in
a series (in SF) of KF tours. I thought Slan was just OK since they were very
loud and 1 dimensional. Zorn either screamed at the top of his lungs or his
sax did the piercing shreak thing over and over while Sharp did his low
rumblings. They were the last act after Curlew and the Jazz Passengers(with
Mark Ribot) who were both magnificent. JP was around the time of the
"Implement Yourself" cd which I think was their best. It was the one and
only time I saw Curlew and they were in fine form especially Tom Cora and
Davey Williams. So, to anyone who missed Slan, it was no big deal.(IMHO)

Subject: Maybe Monday
Well I saw the first of two Earshot Jazz shows that I'm going to
catch this festival: Stackpole/Maybe Monday. I'm sure I'll later
regret missing the Frisell stuff, but one has to budget ones shows.
Anyway I thought I'd give a brief rundown of the show.
Alas for the artists the show was far from sold out. Too many
homebodys in these times it seems, unwilling to go out for a night of
uncertainty with Avant Jazz. Anyone could have bought tickets at the
door and gotten great seats. Oh well.
Seattle Local free jazz outfit 'Stackpole' opened the show.
'Stackpole' is Wally Shoup on sax, Dennis Rea on guitar, Gregg
Keplinger on drums and Geoff Harper on Double Bass. They played 3
10-20min improvs, and were actually quite enjoyable. I seem to
recall getting a bad review or two of this outfit, but I found them
very entertaining. Shoup was as restrained as I have ever seen him,
nowhere near his wailings of 'Project W' and 'Ghidri' I liked Rea's
soundscapeing with the guitar quite a bit. Lots of ebow and slide
and odd sounds. Textural soundscapes with varying levels of energy
was how I would describe their improvs. They played one longish
improv and then 2 shorter ones. All told I'd say they played 45min.
'Maybe Monday' is Fred Frith Guitar, Miya Masaoka on Koto and
Electronics and Larry Ochs on Sax's. Miya's electronics included a
Powerbook running MAX, and a custom MIDI interface to the Koto. She
also had "towers" on each end of the koto with a number of lasers in
them. She was able to use this as a MIDI controller, playing in the
"air" Oddly enough she chose to use Koto sounds for this. I liked
her playing a lot, the koto is fantasic, and a lot bigger than I'd
always thought. She bowed it, pounded on it and rubbed sticks on it,
getting lots of great sounds. Fred was playing a hollow body with
that odd top of the neck pick up. He played it on his lap most of
the time utilizing various objects and effects. He provided a near
continuous wash of sound. He used delays, echoes and loops most of
the time. Several times he would do dramatic de-tuning to great
effect. He did a lot of very percussive stuff with the guitar. Also
he played barefoot. Larry Ochs played tenor and alto saxes, mostly
the tenor. He played a lot of low washes of sound. He layed out
more than anyone else, but did do several almost solos, that were
quite nice. They played for 45-60min and it was quite entrancing.
I found the koto playing particularly engrossing as I've never seen
one played and I loved the sound. Frith though was also very
entertaining, dropping chains on his strings and brushing them with
various brushes. All in all they kind of fell between "Nameless
Uncarved Block" 'AMM' (due to the sax) + 'Such' (due to the oriental
flavor) Of course no percussion made it totally different.
A final note, they were introduced as "from San Francisco" to which
Fred replied "Where's San Francisco" I must say they really looked
like a bunch of old San Fran hippies, appropriately playing with a
much younger women. Frith has that kind of Timothy Leary look, and
Ochs has super sparse long white hair. If they could get Terry Riley
on piano/organ it would be perfect!
All in all an evening worth seeing. With 'Konk Pack' on Friday, this
is maybe the best Earshot for modern pure improv.

It occurs to me that I should put in a list-wide plug for Pollstar, which has
come in handy for me in finding out about upcoming gigs in the Bay Area, and
for finding out if a particular band is on tour. For instance, I entered Denver
and found out that you can take in the fantabulous Neil Diamond this coming
Sunday at the Pepsi Center.
