And speaking of Wire reviews. back in the spring the Wire reviewed a new CD
by a group called Burnt Sugar which was supposedly a project set up by the
critic Greg Tate (the guy who wrote the Downbeat re-evaluation articles on
Agharta etc in 1984). The band are meant to sound like the Agharta band. I
have searched high and low for any mention of this group either the CD or
live. I can find no trace of Burnt Sugar anywhere. Have I got it wrong or is
the Wire inventing its reviews? Does this CD exist? May be its a private
pressing.

I understand that the Wire regularly reviews advance
copies of a given title, and so if the title in
question is then delayed, for whatever reason - eg.
the label subsequently experiencing technical or
financial problems - and doesn't come out for a few
months, it can make the review seem rather unduly
prescient. One instance that springs to mind is the
Gate 'Monolake' CD, which came out on Table of the
Elements four or five years ago. The label were
obviously a bit optimistic in their estimation of the
disc's release date and happily sent out review
copies. There was then some sort of holdup and it
didn't come out until almost five months after the
Wire review was published. That's perhaps what's
happened here. I'd e-mail the reviews editor, Chris
Bohn (aka Biba Kopf - I think his e-mail is listed on
the masthead) and ask him. He's a very nice guy and
I'm sure he'd be happy to help you out.

Subject: get the Brotherhood of Breath on Cuneiform!!!
This is not really a "zorn-list" record but for the few who know the
band and have not already jumped on it (hard to believe), I strongly recommend
the new Brotherhood of Breath on Cuneiform (TRAVELING SOMEWHERE). It was
recorded live in Germany in 1973 and (almost) everybody is on it (Beckett,
Charig, Mongezi Feza, Osborne, Parker, Windo, Miller, Moholo). The song
selection is killer (MRA, Restless, Kongi's Theme, Do It, etc) and the
enthousiasm is contagious (to say the least). The group playing can be a
little bit messy sometimes, but the joy that emanates from the record and the
solos are unbelievable. Only one sad note: looking at the picture, and noti-
cing that so many of them are not with us anymore :-(.
Great thanks to Steve for putting out such a fantastic record! More
like that waiting?

LongArms is carried by Cadence. Solyd I'm less sure about. There's a
link from avantart.com( a great site by the way) to a russian language
website source and cdemusic.org in Albany, NY carries some Solyd titles.
Hope this helps.

That would be a total bummer as he is supposed to play Berkeley the 26th.
The following website (familiar to many I'm sure) lists the contact e-mail

A founding member of the popular rock group John BrownÆs Body, David Gould

Hebrew prayers beautifully performed in GouldÆs inspiring ska arrangements,
are deconstructed for the Tzadik Radical Jewish Series by dub master Jamie

Jewish tradition in this exciting meeting of three worlds. Shlomo Carlebach

yes, a disturbing image. but nonetheless, i think this disc ("divine

in los angeles in early september. but i have yet to hear anything about
it (or see it in the laswell or santana bins at local record stores - but
they (i.e., "st. louis' #1 record store", which has the gall to use an
image of roland kirk as their 'logo') file the vandermark 5 under 'rock'
(and the ruins under classical), so i don't really expect to see it). so
the questions arise: 1. was it really released, or was my sighting some
sort of los angeles cutout fluke? and if it was released, 2. what's it

yes, it did come out. it's called Divine Light, and could be filed under
Laswell's name or Santana. Basically it's the same idea as Panthalassa,
using Santana's collaboration with John McLaughlin (and Larry Young), "Love,
Devotion, Surrender" and his collaboration with Alice Coltrane,
"Illuminations" as source material. I've always loved the McLaughlin
record, but Illuminations was a bit string heavy for my tastes, and that's
how the remix plays out for me. It's got the standard Laswell sparkling
sound, it just depends on how much you like those Santana records. Parts of
"Love Devotion Surrender" have the intensity of Lotus, but "Illuminations"
is not nearly as exciting. sean

It does seem somewhat more obscure than most Sony Legacy releases, but I did
actually hear it yesterday. I'm going to have to dig out my LPs of the
recordings involved to see how they differ... aside from an obvious re-mix
of the chanting on "A Love Supreme". It did remind me how great McLaughlin
and Santana sounded together, and it's nice to hear some of this stuff with
good sound.

I find "Divine Light" kind of frustrating. The tracks from "Love,
Devotion & Surrender" are pretty great, except that when Laswell had
the chance to delete the chanting on "A Love Supreme" and didn't, he
loses points with me. But the stuff from "Illuminations" sounds
pretty treacly.

Subject: New Horvitz
I got Wayne Horvitz' "Otis Spann" cd yesterday, and I'm really
enjoying it. It's a piece composed for the Seattle Chamber Players,
followed by a set of solo pieces for each member, Mikhail Schmidt on
violin, David Sabee, cello, Laura De Luca, clarinet, and Paul Taub,
flute. Additionally, Horvitz does a remix of each solo piece,
provides programmed accompaniment on the pieces for violin and flute,
and plays piano on the piece for clarinet.
The title piece is definitely the highlight here. The liner notes
state that the premiere had improvised duets between Frisell and
Horvitz as interludes between the movements, the recording omits
these duets, and while I'm sure they would have been a nice addition,
the piece stands on its own. Horvitz mentions Bartok's Mikrokosmos
and the AACM as influences on the piece, in addition to its
inspiration, blues pianist Spann. I also hear traces of Copland and
Debussy. The 2nd movement, "Love, Love, Love" sounds very familiar, I
need to search my CD's to see where else he has recorded it.
The solo pieces are very nice, and the remixes add some tasteful
processing to the original tracks. Sounds like Wayne's got a copy of
Pluggo!
AFAIK, the disc is only available through cdemusic.org. Thanks to
listmember Hywel Davies for alerting me to this disc and the cdemusic
site. Also, listmember Herb Levy apparently runs the label, Periplum.
This is a great disc, especially if you like the more introspective
side of Horvitz' work, like the 4+1 ensemble or his solo "Monologues"
disc.
