"Republicans (single or double term)suck." - agreed, but the notion that
Republican administrations are unhealthy for rock is rather easy to beat
down - rock & roll per se began during the Eisenhower administration; the
Stooges were creatures of the Nixon era, and the American underground was
quite vibrant in the Reagan/Bush Sr. era.
On a wholly unrelated note, does anyone know if Charly and/or Get Back
plan to reissue Alan Silva's brilliant "Luna Surface" LP? It's much needed
in this household.

I don't have any information on A Leroy as a person, but this
composer wrote several works for dance, media, & performance artists
in the 1980s & 1990s and may have had a couple of works included on
some of the Tellus compilations released by Harvestworks during that
time. I think there may have been a performance or two of pieces
during one or more of the New Music America festivals in this period,
so I may have something like a short bio someplace.
However, we're in the midst of getting ready to move, so I can't be
much more specific til I can get at some things that have been boxed
up for a while.
I'll let you know when/if I find anything more.
Bests,

At first I thought it was "Her Anal Lord," but no, it's Harold Arlen (must
be "Over the Rainbow").

Labeled as ôOne of BostonÆs steadfast explorers,ö by
Bob Blumenthal of the Boston Globe, saxophonist and
clarinetist David Gross discovered the world of
improvised music while studying with Yusef Lateef at
Hampshire College.
He has performed with Le Quan Ninh, Eddie Prevost,
Steve Roden, Martin Tetrault, Kaffe Matthews, Glenn
Spearman, Raphe Malik and many members of the
Boston free-improv scene including Bhob Rainey, Greg
Kelley, and Laurence Cook.
Currently, Gross is transforming the saxophone into
exactly what it is: a metal tube with keys,
mouthpiece, and a reed. Reviews of his recordings, on
his own Tautology label with ensembles EED and FETISH,
have been as varied as "The range of textured noise
that he cajoles from his instrument is impressive" to
ôlengthy episodes of fingernails ripping at a
blackboard.ö He has performed throughout the US.
Free improvisor Michael Bullock has played bass in 8
countries, on a dozen records, and in a variety of
bands, touring extensively both solo and as part of
various ensembles. He has also played with well-known
improvisors such as Eddie PrΘvost, LΩ Quan Ninh, and
Peter Kowald, in addition to working with
numerous members of Boston's improvised music
community. Two of his current obsessions include
IIbasSpit, an electro-acoustic trio with Tucker
Dulin (trombone) and Seth Cluett (bass, voice) which
is planning a CD release this year; and an ongoing
curiosity with acoustic feedback. Bullock has
released recordings on such diverse labels as Emanem,
Rounder, and Naxos. His first release as a leader,
[there the eye goes not;] (Tautology 006), featuring
rising stars Bhob Rainey, BrendaHopkins Miranda, and
Tatsuya Nakatani was released in 1999. Of the disk,
Derek Taylor of Cadence magazine said: "The real joy
of this quartet is their shared origin which is
translated into a confidence of purpose. . . [Bullock]
and his peers are excellent examples of improvisers
who are constantly and uncompromisingly exploring the
unmapped nooks and crannies of audible sound."
Tucker Dulin has performed all over the country in
many contexts including the Boston Philharmonic,
SONOR, Klaresque Ensemble, Callithumpian Consort,
Mass Eye and Ear, and the Masashi Harada Ensemble. He
is currently working on a DMA in contemporary music at
UC, San Diego, with Bertram Turetzky, George Lewis,
and Charles Curtis. He specializes in post-war solo
and chamber repertoire for the trombone. He has played
with Bhob Rainey, Eddie Prevost, Steve Drury, Greg
Kelley, George Lewis, Pauline Oliveros, Benjamin
Zander, Jeff Hudgins, and Randy Brecker. His trio,
IIBasspit, with Seth Cluett and Mike Bullock, has
performed throughout New England.
Liz Tonne is a professional singer in demand from
Boston's event sector for performances in various
settings. She has received much critical praise for
her daring interpretations of traditional jazz
standards. An active member of Boston's improvised
music community, she takes inspiration from the
unorthodox use of the human voice. Tonne's ability to
interpret and improvise in collobarative settings has
made her a much desired performer as her extended
vocal technique allows her to work in multiple
experimental settings, transcending typical vocal
limitations. She is currently a member of undr
quartet, has performed extensively as a member of
Saturnalia and was vocalist for the rock band Mile
Wide. She has performed with, among many
others; Daniel Carter, Stephen Drury, Carol Genetti,
Greg Kelley, Peter Kowald, Johnny McLellan, Matt
Maneri, Roger Miller, Eddie Prevost and Bhob
Rainey.

I'm trying to help a friend find good indie distributors for a CD. For a

Cadence. Anyone have any good/bad experiences with any of these
places? Any other suggestions?

My primary cd player and my primary computer cd player have a nested
indentation on a tray that slides out, where the 3" fits very snugly. When
I had a diskman, the cd fit snugly on the spindle, and size was irrelevant.
For the player in my car, and players in other computers, there are slits
into which I slide the cd, and these players won't play the 3", but since
nothing I have on a 3" is anything I'd want to play in the car, this hasn't
bothered me too much. The square cds are actually the same size as the
full-size ones at the corners even though they only have as much music as a
3", so I haven't had any problems with them either (haven't tried them in
the car though).

If you're talking about a single CD release and not a label with a catalog,
your friend is not liely to get much interest from Allegro and absolutely
none from Koch, unless it's gonna sell like Ani DiFranco. And even if Koch
were interested, they take a huge margin on the sales, which can be
difficult for a start-up to bear. Cadence is always a good bet, though you
know exactly where they're going to be selling the disc - which is both good
(reaching the converted) and bad (not reaching much of anyone else). I have
less experience with the other two, though I'd expect Caroline to be the
same as Koch. Don't forget City Hall.
