I've seen the disc "reviewed" somewhere - pretty provocative images were drawn to mind. He said a lot of other interesting things in that interview, too... the most obvious of which is that he feels he would not be playing the music he is now playing had he remained in New York, and that moving to Seattle is the best thing he could have done for his art and career. I get the impression that Bill is changing course right now. There are three shows coming up here in Seattle around the end of the month that might illustrate. The first is Bill in a duo with Malian guitarist Boubacar Traore. I ran into Bill at a show a few weeks ago - we were both there to see the Super Rail Band. He said that he and Boubacar had been playing together a lot lately. The second show is Bill and Jack DeJohnette. No surprises there. The third show, for early November, is Bill Frisell and The Bomb. The group is Brazilian guitarist Vinicius Canturia, Greek oud player Christos Govetas and Malian percussionist Sidiki Camera. Sound to me like the americana thing is at least on hold right now. Also entirely in the realm of rumor I hear that Wayne Horvitz is putting together a band for a show in January here in Seattle. The band is to be Wayne, Bill, Ron Miles on trumpet, Peggy Lee on cello and Joey Baron. Agreed, and what follows this is that that instrument can be used quite tastefully in certain hands. But in others, it's fabulous--take the currently-being-discussed Bill Frisell with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones as an example. Mr. Frisell's work is tasteful, even masterful. Re: Tortoise... I dig Tortoise, and some of the other stuff to come out of that scene (Chicago Underground Trio/Quartet, which is more 'jazz'-y). I've never seen them live, but would love to. A friend saw them in LA this past summer and said that their performance was great, and very faithful to the studio versions, which surprised me. I would expect a more improv-based concept. A few years back he was gigging semi-regularly with a trio consisting of himself, Joey, and saxophonist Billy Drewes. He spent a couple of years co-leading a cover band called the Mahavishnu Project with Bendian, but he's since left that group and it's Bendian's show entirely. (Might seem unlikely, but when you hear Bendian "do" Billy Cobham, you realize he was born to do it...) More lately, Driscoll's been playing classical bass gigs with the American Composers Orchestra and even some subbing in the New York Philharmonic. He plays in the band of pianist Mick Rossi (one disc out on Knitting Factory, 'They Have a Name for Everything') and also leads a quartet with Rossi, Drewes and drummer Keith Carlock which I've not heard as yet. Fun fact No. 1: In 1974, Driscoll studied with Jaco Pastorius in Miami! Fun fact No. 2: Driscoll's roommate at Berklee was Bill Frisell! Fun fact No. 3: After they graduated, Driscoll and Frisell moved to Belgium together and made an album with Chet Baker that sucked! Then Frisell moved back to New York and Driscoll stayed to play with Toots Thielemans! And then Driscoll moved back to New York and played with Buddy Rich, who yelled a lot! I was frustrated with Tortoise's lack of improvisation for several reasons. Firstly, I know Jeff Parker is a very good improvisor, in other contexts he's great, and it felt like he was on a fairly short rein with them. Secondly, in interviews, the band always touts the fact that their tunes start as group improvisations. It seems to me that if that was such a large part of their esthetic, it'd come through in their shows. I still think that "TNT" is a great record, good tunes, great arrangements, terrific recording. I think that Wayne Horvitz is a master of blending jazz and studio techniques. "Miracle Mile" still stands out for me. His new disc by the 4+1 ensemble, "From a Window" is also very nice. In that group, Tucker Martine adds subtle live processing and loops, his role is much larger on the new disc than their first. It's a really nice blend of chamber jazz with electronics. I talked to Horvitz several years ago, and mentioned that Miracle Mile was a favorite of mine. He said that he'd probably never have the budget to do another record on that scale.
