I assume that's sarcasm
George Straitt isn't western swing, and IS pop music thinly veiled as

Gee, all those note-perfect Bob Wills covers ("Home In San Antone")
throughout his catalog, complete with Johnny Gimble taking the fiddle solos
isn't western swing? Are you one of those guys who thinks Don Byron Plays
Western Swing is jazz-seeking-publicity dressed up as klezmer? It has the
same border patrol feeling from here.

"Reinventing"? These people aren't Bill Monroe or Lefty Frizell. And I'd
like to think I've played enough country music -- with enough people who
know how to pass it down -- that I can tell the difference between Gram
Parsons and people who have listened to lots of Flying Burrito Brothers.
Wilco is on a really big label with a really big budget, as is George
Strait, the LA Philharmonic, Bill frisell, Bjork, Wynton Marsalis, and
Journey. It doesn't mean anything except that they're out to make the best
living they can and do their music under the best possible circumstances.
It's no benchmark for or against quality. It is, however, indication that
"indie cred" takes a backseat -- with almost anyone -- to major label
dollars.
And, personally, I would never write a dismissive two-word sentence like
"Wilco sucks" without some kind of extreme qualifier. I DO NOT dismiss
anyone's efforts offhandedly. I know more than most people how hard it is
to make records, even under the best conditions. Take me out of context
often enough and I will show up in person and ask you to explain yourself --
I gave Matt Mitchell quite a start after he made an on-list remark about Uri
Caine with which I found grounds for disgreement. And Matt will tell you I
am a one-man wrecking crew. I am a strapping lad of 6'1, 110 lbs soaking
wet, and can break a Crispy Creme donut with my bare hands. I assure you I
am quite menacing.

That's odd, my email said something about "Wilco Socks." Some new blues/R&B
singer?

Hi Everyone,
I think the thing about Bill Frisell being a new Chet Atkins might be a
little premature. I get the impression that Bill is changing course right
now. There are three shows coming up here in Seattle around the end of the
month that might illustrate. The first is Bill in a duo with Malian
guitarist Boubacar Traore. I ran into Bill at a show a few weeks ago - we
were both there to see the Super Rail Band. He said that he and Boubacar
had been playing together a lot lately. The second show is Bill and Jack
DeJohnette. No surprises there. The third show, for early November, is
Bill Frisell and The Bomb. The group is Brazilian guitarist Vinicius
Canturia, Greek oud player Christos Govetas and Malian percussionist Sidiki
Camera. Sound to me like the americana thing is at least on hold right now.
Also entirely in the realm of rumor I hear that Wayne Horvitz is putting
together a band for a show in January here in Seattle. The band is to be
Wayne, Bill, Ron Miles on trumpet, Peggy Lee on cello and Joey Baron.
That's a good lineup, but with that amount of talent, I'd guess it's a
one-off gig, not a working band.

It's kind of nice to see BF freeing himself up with such a variety of
groups under his own (at least partial) leaderrship. I have always wished
he'd do that (much as I loved Joey and Kermit), because he's such a
versatile player.

The recent FANTOMAS cover of Mancini's Charade made me interested in
purchasing this classic film. But I found out there are three or four DVD
versions of it. Which one do you suggest.
Thanks

It's true. I was in traction for weeks. Mentally I'm still in
traction. :)
