Subject: Stockhausen: WTC disaster "greatest artwork of all time"
Forwarded from another list. Good thing no one in America knows who
Stockhausen is, or we'd be lining up for record burning by now. Can anyone
verify that this is truthful, given the amount of inaccurate crap floating
around out there right now?
Steve Smith
ssmith36@sprynet.com
According to the German news agency dpa, Karlheinz Stockhausen said in
an interview he gave on account of a concert in Hamburg:
"What happened there is - now you must readjust your brain - the biggest
artwork of all times. That spirits achieve in a single act what we in
music cannot dream of, that people rehearse ten years long like mad,
totally fanatical for a concert and then die. This is the biggest
artwork that exists at all in the whole universe... I couldn't match
it. Against that, we - as composers - are nothing."
Asked by a jorunalist whether he identified art and crime, Stockhausen
replied: "It's a crime because the people were not consenting. They
haven't come to the 'concert'. This is evident. And nobody had announced
them that they could die in its process. What happened there
spiritually, this leap from security, from what's ordinary, from life,
that sometimes happens poco a poco in art. Or else it is nothing."
The Financial Times Germany quotes Stockhausen's colleague Gyorgy Ligeti
with the following reaction: "Stockhausen has taken the side of the
terrorists. [...] If he thinks this atrocious mass murder is an
artwork, I am sorry that I have to say that he should be locked up in a
psychiatric hospital".

The 1971 Johnny Otis lp _Cuttin Up_ (with a cover by Jack Davis of Mad
Magazine) is pretty sweet; straight blues, features Shuggie Otis as you
might expect. Sugarcane also plays on some John Mayall albums, I'd
recommend the 2xLP _Back to the Roots_ if you can find it (a personal
high-school years staple, also featuring Clapton, Taylor, Mandel, etc.
- -- a "reunion" gig, sometimes with combinations of the guitarists).
Dittos on earlier comments about the MPS LP, which also features Volker
Kriegel & (on one track) Terje Rypdal.

Unfortunately there seems to be more to these quotes than the statement
on stockhausen.org implies, as they stem from audio protocolls made by
NDR, a television and radio broadcaster. Several newspapers* have
printed the story, without mentioning the involvement of the tabloid
"Bild". The Music Festival Hamburg has canceled Stockhausen's concerts,
which were scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

This is also not about politics.

sorry for the promotional intrusion, and further apologies if you receive=20
more than one copy of this:
I'm proud to announce the release of the latest CD on my label:
Keith Rowe/Toshimaru Nakamura-Weather Sky (Erstwhile 018)
Keith Rowe and Toshimaru Nakamura are two of the most important musicians in=
=20
the world today. Fans of each other=E2=80=99s work, they began to collaborat=
e in=20
early 2001, and have created in Weather Sky a timeless work of art.
Rowe, who is best known for his groundbreaking work with AMM (the seminal=20
improvising collective he co-founded in 1965 with Eddie Pr=C3=A9vost and Lou=
=20
Gare), also currently leads the Music In Movement Electronic Orchestra, an=20
all-star group featuring many of Europe's premier electronic musicians. Over=
=20
the last few years, Rowe has also been pursuing numerous projects outside of=
=20
his two primary projects, releasing superb records with Burkhard Beins=20
(Grain, on Zarek), G=C3=BCnter M=C3=BCller/Taku Sugimoto (The World Turned U=
pside Down,=20
on Erstwhile), as well as his solo work, most recently documented on the=20
difficult to digest but very strong Harsh (Grob).
Nakamura plays the "no-input mixing board", connecting the input of the boar=
d=20
to the output, then manipulating the resultant feedback. Since 1998, he's be=
e
n exploring the possibilities of his instrument in contexts ranging from=20
solo to collaborations with Sachiko M, Andrea Neumann, and the duo project=20
Repeat with drummer Jason Kahn. Nakamura is also a co-founder of The=20
Improvisation Meeting at Bar Aoyama, a monthly concert series in Tokyo, whic=
h=20
recently changed its name and location to Meeting At Off Site, and has toure=
d=20
Europe quite frequently over the last few years, to widespread acclaim.
Weather Sky was recorded in Saint-Etienne, France in June 2001, and consists=
=20
of three live improvisations totalling 73 minutes. Both musicians almost=20
entirely sublimate their egos throughout, creating a pure abstract feedback,=
=20
with occasional flecks of sound jumping to the foreground, coalescing to=20
produce a sense of eternity.
=E2=80=9CRowe and Nakamura's is a music at once immensely sophisticated and=20=
utterly=20
simple. A music which recreates the uncanny and pregnant suspension of time=20
in live performance; and which is itself the physical manifestation of an=20
exquisite sense of proportion. An ergonomic music which is philosophically=20
and aesthetically radical, drawing on - and seemingly echoing - the flight o=
f=20
the most numinous abstractions; and yet felt as a physical tremor in the ver=
y=20
brain of the listener, reminding us that the body is a memory, the profound=20
depths of which are only fitfully probed. This is the sound of a deep dive=20
into the void, breathtaking and mysterious.=E2=80=9D-Ed Baxter=20

I'm proud to announce the release of the latest CD on my label:
Cor Fuhler/Gert-Jan Prins-The Flirts (Erstwhile 017)
Cor Fuhler and Gert-Jan Prins are both prominent members of the European=20
improv world. Both live in Amsterdam, yet their paths rarely crossed before=20
they became involved in the initial incarnation of MIMEO in 1997.=20
Fuhler is primarily known for his work as a pianist, in ongoing projects wit=
h=20
such mainstays of the Dutch scene as Han Bennink, Michael Moore and Tristan=20
Honsinger. He released a superb solo prepared piano CD in 1994, 7CC in IO=20
(Geestgronden). In The Flirts, Fuhler manipulates sounds from turntables and=
=20
mbiras, filtering them through an analogue synth. Prins=E2=80=99 background=20=

drummer, but over the past decade, he=E2=80=99s focused almost exclusively o=
n=20
electronic noise-based music, using radio and television transmitters to=20
create a distinctive, physical sound. In 2000, he released a solo CD on Grob=
,=20
Prins Live, as well as a superb trio CD with Thomas Lehn and Peter Van=20
Bergen, e-rax-Live At the Bimhuis, on his own label, X-Or. Both Fuhler and=20
Prins are also still members of MIMEO.
Since joining MIMEO, Fuhler and Prins have worked more and more together, in=
=20
and out of the band, and in early 2001, they recorded The Flirts over the=20
course of two studio sessions in Amsterdam. The Flirts combines a relentless=

that is seemingly chaotic, yet very musical.
