  195. 2nd one (that you've got): and faster.

  197. * speaking of summer reading, a book called THE LOSER by Thomas Bernhadt. 
  198. it's a fictional story about 3 young friends and piano students. the first 
  199. was Gould (we all know what happened to him), the other was so depressed by 
  200. hearing and knowing someone of Gould's genius he killed himself, and the 
  201. third is the narrator, who gave up music and is depressed. it takes place 
  202. after Glenn's death, and just after the other's suicide. it's so brilliant -- 
  203. as an improviser, reading it is especially fruitful. I can now (almost) 
  204. relate to some of the objective questions of the classical world; ie, "why 
  205. even bother recording Goldberg when Gould has done it perfectly?" it's total 
  206. bullshit, but now I can see how some oldschool classical dudes feel about 
  207. things. (and if you don't know Thomas Burnhadt, you either love or hate his 
  208. obsessiveness.)

  278. I have to admit I had the same reaction to "The Palace Walk".  In fact,
  279. I found the style so annoying that I didn't finish it.  My rationale in 
  280. abandoning it is that there is more literature out in the world than any 
  281. one person can read in a lifetime, so why waste your time on something 
  282. that is not enjoyable to you?  
  283.  
  284. At one time I thought I might try to read at least one book by each of the 
  285. 100 or so Nobel Laureates.  But books like "The Palace Walk" and "Beloved" 
  286. convinced me otherwise.  On the other hand, during the attempt I did discover 
  287. some real masters unknown to me before then, like Miguel Angel Asturias
  288. (Mulata)
  289. and Par Lagerkvist (The Sibyl, Aftonlund, The Dwarf, Herod and Mariamne, etc.)
  290. and Salvatore Quasimodo (Selected Poems) ...

  679. elaborate, now that I've picked up the new issue of ICE and seen more

  682. "John Coltrane's last recorded performance, a previously unissued April 23,
  683. 1967 set at the Olatunji Center of African Culture in New York City, will be
  684. issued on September 25 on Impulse! as 'The Oltaunji Concert: The Last Live
  685. Recording.'  The show consisted of just two songs: a 28-minute "Ogunde" and
  686. a 35-minute "My Favorite Things." - David Okamoto
  687.  
  688. Given that we've all got more than a few amazing versions of "MFT" in our
  689. collections, I'm most anticipating that "Ogunde."
