I know the other guitar player was not Marc Ribot (too bad). Plus there was a
drummer and a keyboard player who I did not recognize. As for Fela Kuti,
yessssssss - the albums are as good as everyone says - start with Original
Sufferhead/ITT - you won't regret it

The most recent band that usually does the album tunes is Vinicius Cantuaria
on guitar, Gibbs on bass and drum loops, Skoota Warner on drums (plays with
headphones to drum loop tracks at times), Arto, and I can't remember the
keyboards player. Wicked band....

I agree. It is strange. But then again Charly looks like a rather corrupt
outfit, good CDs aside.

There's a great story about Charly when Universal (MCA) sued them for
kazillions of dollars over their unauthorised selling of the Chess Records
catalog; The specific company (say Charly Holdings Ltd.) at the specific
address filed for bankruptcy, while a new company (say Charly Ltd. Holdings)
in the same building but with a new street address around the corner went
into business the next day, minus the Chess titles of course...

How many of you people are using a multi-disc shuffle? I can only think of 2
albums that I really listened to a lot in the past week or so:
- - Brad Shepik's "The Well" - actually, I was basically listening to the
title track over and over.
- - Vandermark/Drake/McBride "Spaceways Incorporated" - probably because I
just bought it, but it is great nonetheless.
Other than that I've skimmed through the T.J. Kirk albums, more just to
check out their Monk interpretations as reference for a project I'm putting
together. And a few albums that have been in and out of my cd player for as
long as I can remember: Bobby Previte's "Too Close To The Pole" and all the
Dave Douglas Tiny Bell Trio albums...

Various folks provided the names of the other musicians so I won't repeat
what they said, but the keyboard player was Andreas Levin.
I can't say I enjoyed this too much though. I definitely prefer the albums. I
don't think he was able to recreate all the subtilities of the songs and they
are, in my opinion, very important. They were not able to recreate the
beautiful ambiances of the albums. Not that I want them to recreate perfectly
the album though, but at least not to serve us something half as good. It
really was not until the 5th or 6th song - when they played one or two more
"upbeat" songs - that I (partially) enjoyed it. The sound was not incredible
too, the basses were kind of messy. Now, it was not so bad, but it definitely
was not unforgettable.
>Also, caught the Vandermark 5 at the 'other' jazz-fest going on during the

on the list - they were smokin! Much better than the last time I saw them >
which was at Victoriaville last year - their new album sounds like it will >
be the best so far.
I personally had a totally different perception. To me, they were almost
playing "straight jazz", especially the first set. Vandermark had one or two
nice solos in the second set (especially a sort of duo with Kessler) and so
did Bishop. Even the structures were very close to more traditional jazz,
often being simply a theme followed by an exchange of solos (theme, sax,
trombone, drums then sax and back to the theme). Technically, it was well
done, but I can't say I enjoyed the compositions. I prefered the show at the
Casa back in September.
This being said, I was kind of impressed to see them play without any
amplification. Of course, the Centro Social Espanol is not an arena, but it's
still a much larger room than the Casa.
>Still, I wonder how Test was that night.
I was not at the show, but I was told it was good. Quite heavy stuff
apparently, i.e. the "percing holes in the walls" approach if I can say...

Mathieu

Subject: RE: metalcore/noisecore bands (there IS some Zorn content here)
This is all good clarification, as I would have expected from William, who's
been helping me out as unofficial tour guide to a lot of this stuff.
Personally, I don't really hear Candiria and Dillinger as being in precisely
the same stylistic camp as Isis, Botch and Cave In, though. I think of the
former as being more speed and precision thrash oriented, while I think of
the latter as being more textural and spacy, for lack of more precise terms.
Both are equally valid developments from and reactions to the standard metal
scene, whatever that is. Wonder what will become of Dillinger now that the
lead singer has quit this past week "to concentrate on non-musical
activities"?
I should clarify re: the Melvins influence in Cave In - it's really just the
last two songs on the first CD, 'Beyond Hypothermia,' which are fairly
explicitly described as being Melvins-esque in the liner notes. Even the
vocals sound rather like Buzz. It was sloppy of me to seem to say that it
was a more widespread phenomenon in their music - it's not.
And a trivia question - there's a bonus track on that same CD, a rather more
conventional thrash metal tune with lyrics that lead me to think it's a
cover of Metallica's "Fight Fire with Fire," only I don't own 'Ride the
Lightning' and it's been so long since I've heard it that I just can't be
sure. Anyone know?

I think there are a lot of interesting bands in this genre now. A lot of
people on this list know Dillinger Escape Plan, who are almost in their own
category, but still definitely a part of this genre. I would aslo count
Candiria (from Brooklyn), Converge (kind of a cross between Dillinger Escape
Plan's fast-paced/chaotic style with a heavier Slayer influence) and Today
is the Day (very disturbing vocals and lyrics, the singer often sounds like
he is being electrocuted...) among the better ones, along with Cave-In (I
don't hear the Melvins influence at all, though!), Isis (the slowest,
sludgiest of these groups) and Old Man Gloom (who are as influenced by
droning stuff like Earth, Lull and Organum as by the other "heavy" things).
there are others, but I will stop there ...

This has been owning my ears lately:
Tool - Lateralus
David Lee Roth - Sonrisa Salvaje (Spanish version of his Eat 'Em and
Smile album, quite hilarious)
Primus - Brown Album (sounds like a lost Tom Waits record for some
reason. Killer lo-fi production)
Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity
Praxis - Metatron
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence

I'm a pretty big fan of the Paratactile double, I saw it! that before which
I could only sense... The amazing title track spans both disks, and the
pacing is much like Allegorical Understanding (it even closes with a short
quiet piece), and it's a studio recording as well. Highly recommended.

If it's a quartet recording, it's from 96 or something; on the other
hand, FF played at Mozg club solo at the indicated date (a day after a
