I don't know how appropriate this sort of thing is, but in light of the fact
that some of the stuff in question concerns performers discussed on this
list, here goes...

My own little web corner, complete with sound files (free) of my work with,
among others, Uri Caine (some of my earliest demos), John Gilmore, and Ken

Sorry if this seems like a self-congradulatory posting, but in light of a
few of the participants, I thought it may be reasonable.

Really?? To me, it doesn't sound chaotic at all. Different conceptions
indeed, I guess. "Locus solus" wasn't the first zorn-album I heard or
bought, but it was the one that 'did it to me'. For sure!! After hearing
this album, I just knew I wanted to hear/have everything from the man (I
didn't know the dimensions of his discography at that time :-)). So I
started to buy. And buy, and buy, and...; locus solus still being one of my
favourites.
Also interesting liner notes (by j.zorn): "Up to this point people either
hated what i did - or loved it. But from locus solus on, the fans were
divided against themselves, liking one group, hating another. You can't
please everyone. From locus solus on, i found that i couldn't please anyone.
Caveat emptor."
BTW, could it be that Mr. Bungle's Disco Volante is named after the song
disco volante on locus colus?

He! That's pretty good! I had totally forgotten that one.
I think both Zu Feng and Locus Solos are very noisy and chaotic. That's one
of the reasons I love them.

I asked him about it last year in Berlin
(http://www.emd.pl/emd/pl4/artists/l/lindsay_arto/live/20000411.htm), and he
said, the is not going to record anything like Aggregates in the near
future. But, he promissed, that DNA will be re-issued soon. Aggregates is
great, another record like it would be fantastic.

Never heard it, but I remember back in the middle ages when some people from
this list were interested in drum'n'bass and even jungle it was mentioned,
as some sort of "inspiration". As it was told, it's should be severely
amazing.

I see meaningless technique used in film just as much as in music. The
movie (I won't even call it film) Requiem for a Dream was filled with it.
There was little reason for split screens, fast forwards/slow motion,
cameras affixed to actors, or excessive quick cut montages. It seemed that
things that had meaning in Pi were just superfluous this time around for
Arronofsky. Camera gimmicks, avant-garde techniques same thing.
Sorry for the rant,

I'm one of those people who never got with LOCUS SOLACE. Kept wondering if
I was missing something, went back to it a few times, but there's something
about it that sounds to me like it's groundwork for something a little more,
for lack of better words, planned.

there is a recording "Tabla Duet" but as far as i remember it is a
recording of classical indian music...
and as far as i remember they are accompanied by other indian
musicians.
and it is not at all this tabla 'n' bass style of "tabla beat science"

I'm planning to go (assuming my travel arrangements don't fall
through), and like Andreas will be taking a tent. Hotel or other
inside accommodations seem to be hard to come by. But you can camp
out (for free) in the field behind the house with the currency
exchange office on the main street of Nickelsdorf -- the one the
Jazzgalerie is on, Untere Hauptstr. This seems to be a longstanding
Konfrontationen tradition (AFAIK the house is owned by a relative of
Hans Falb's; a bathroom and outside shower are available), and the
best spots for hitching your tent get occupied pretty quick, so don't
get there too late! It'd be nice to see you there!

Hi all,
I haven't heard Songs From The Hermetic Theatre yet, but it should be in the
mail in short notice. My question however is if there's anyone here who
knows what equipment/software Zorn uses when creating computermusic. Most of
the electronic musicians I worked with/know use the combination Mac/max/msp.
I'm curious to find out what Zorn uses.
Thanks,

Subject: About Laraaji
Hello you all,
A deepening and some news about Laraaji, a sensitive, loving and visionary
musician who has won many people's heart with his healing zyther thanks to
his natural ability to create meditative and joyful states.
The Zyther is a stringed instrument with open tuning like Indian santoor,
which produces a cascade of harmonics with a floating, hypnotic effect.
Laraaji uses different tunings to obtain different harmonic and emotional
possibilities.
Besides he plays the zyther with a variety of traditional and no
conventional techniques, plucking it, caressing it, striking it with several
kinds of sticks and with brushes, grazing it etc.
Since his debut with Day of radiance - Ambient 3 produced by Brian Eno,
Laraaji has been inviting to collaborate with many musicians of the
contemporary scene and he has published some cd which had a good
international success.
We list them below.
Vel Net will soon publish his new work "My orangeness" that will be
available in some weeks.
It's an initiation run, recorded in the South of Italy, in an antique stone
farm, with musicians of Vel Net artistic community,
in which Laraaji take the various guests to meet a visitor arrived from
other dimensions!
Floating music, dreamy and coloured by this modern shaman.
In the site www.vel-net.com it's possible to listen to some tracks of this
cd yet.
At the moment Laraaji is always out and around with his soloist performances
(with two electrified Zythers and various FX boxes) and with his workshop on
the use of the sound and the laughter as a method of self-healing and inner
evolution.
We foresee with Laraaji to have a "My orangeness " European and overseas
tour for next autumn.

I'm not a bug fan of all laswell's de/re-construction work, but this one is
good IMO. Taken in its entirety, the CD gives me a trance or dreamlike
feel. Sorry to report there's not much brass - it's mainly percussion and
chanting (some closer to santaria style), and later in the CD it moves into
more melodic territory (guitars with the percussion, a balad, a dance
track).
There is another Double CD of similar stuff that I haven't heard, some of
which is supposedly the originial tracks for the Imaginary Cuba CD. Anyone
have opinions on this one compared to IC?
