  47.  I've listened to a number of improvers who play guitar.
  48. I've spent a LOT of time listening to Chadbourne, a good amount with E
  49. Sharp, not much time with Bailey and Frith.
  50.  
  51. I'm trying to learn how to play guitar and really have two questions.
  52. 1. I don't know many guitar improvisers beyond who I listed. I know must
  53. other guitarists in other forms of music but not the improv world. Who
  54. should I check out beyond the above?
  55.  
  56. 2. How did they learn what they know? I know that's a vague and broad
  57. question but right now it's hard to imagine practicing scales like I am and
  58. ending up where Chadbourne is.
  59.  
  60. I did just pick up Bailey's book, "Improvisation" but haven't read it yet.

  126. I don't think he necessarily wanted to sound like Chadbourne, but rather
  127. wondered how Chadbourne got where he's at... I've always thought that
  128. anything you do (scales, transcribing, learning bagpipes, playing in a
  129. Poison cover band) helps to shape your musical development, but in the end
  130. the most important thing is what you bring to it. Chadbourne may have
  131. practised exactly the same stuff as Scofield for all we know. I've never
  132. been too incredibly big on the 'improvising guitarist' front, but some other
  133. names that you didn't mention that you may be interested in: Henry Kaiser,
  134. Joe Morris, Marc Ducret... oh and of course Marc Ribot...

  158. bootlegs? I listened to a few minutes of Hallogallo and didn't hear much 
  159. difference.

  172. Recently I ordered the Ruins album "Pallaschtom", partly due to an interest
  173. in hearing those medleys mentioned here on the Zorn list. Well, knowing my
  174. luck, I managed to get the version with only one (the classical) medley! Is
  175. there any chance the others are posted anywhere on the net, or that some
  176. kind soul could do so?

  178. PS.. I've always wondered why American musicians have those little names for
  179. their music (like Dave Douglas "Noenmity Music", Brad Shepik "Felijar
  180. Music", Marc Ribot "Knockwurst Music", etc.) - is there some sort of legal
  181. reason behind this or is it just a fun word game? We don't have it in
  182. Australia...

  197. There was a compound verb in there, and it's much more than sentiment. It's
  198. the hardest thing anyone can do. That's why most of us are listening and
  199. promoting rather than 'emulating.'

  212.        Go back. Learn the basics. Know your instrument
  213. to the point where you can absolutely express yourself
  214. freely. Any musical idea you might have, you must be
  215. able to play. To achieve this, specially in an
  216. improvisational context, you should really focus in
  217. the development of your instrument. That means you
  218. should go back to Charlie Christian and from there on.
  219. Just to quote something Joey Baron said about playing
  220. free improvisational music: "to break the rules, you
  221. must know them first". If Joey says so... Good luck

  246. discoveries to report except...we are renting a furnished place temporarily 
  247. (until our new place is ready), and found an LP there (amongst a handful of 
  248. typical classical discs) of Cathy Berberian called 'Revolution' containing 
  249. all Beatles covers...I already knew her 'Ticket To Ride' from the 
  250. MagnifiCathy collection, but a whole album of Maclen tunes, what bliss!!!

  277. John Zorn was one of the five composers on a program "Celebrating John 
  278. Ashbery" at the Guggenheim Museum on May 13, 2001. Each composer had on the 
  279. program a piece based on an Ashbery poem. I enjoyed the whole program very 
  280. much, and inquired if there were any plans to record these five pieces. The 
  281. answer was, only if a record company had the money and was clamoring for it. 
  282. Could Tzadik be that company? If so, the person to contact is Howard, from

  301. Well said.  I'd include reading good books; listening
  302. intently to people talking and watching them move and
  303. interact (i.e. pull a Dostoevsky, 'cept don't follow
  304. people you don't know); study an apparently unrelated
  305. field; learn a really different activity (fixing
  306. automobiles, painting, shrub sculpture), and for god's
  307. sake watch lots of films.  But of course, that's just
  308. a clutch of suggestions...
  309.  
  310. It was kind of interesting for me to read Marc Ribot
  311. talking about breakthroughs on, or through, his
  312. instrument; he was talking about trying to play like
  313. like Eric Dolphy, the bizarre intervallic acrobatics,
  314. and I think he accidentally started to abuse his
  315. instrument to good effect with a metal pick.  I wish I

  318. Also, interesting to hear Keith Rowe, who maybe isn't
  319. a "guitarist" anymore, but sure _plays_ the guitar,
  320. talk about not practicing (the WIRE interview, a few
  321. months ago).  Something inside me was irritated by
  322. that comment, but what a novel, Occam's way to "start
  323. the day playing the guitar an entirely different way,"
  324. or whatever Rowe once said.  Pretty inspiring.

  402. Definitely worth checking out.  He took the bowed piano idea from a piece
  403. by Curtis Curtis-Smith (same place John Cage got the idea), and instead of
  404. writing solo work, wrote for a bowed piano ensemble, which is a bunch of
  405. people with rosined fishing lines inside *one* piano.  I've got New Albion
  406. two albums of his (one's actually on vinyl), both recommended.

  600. Tryptich consists of 3 long pieces: one based on Indian mythology, a
  601. soundtrack-piece for a movie and shortened solo version of satyricon.

  611. Only bad thing: a third of this CD is devoted to yet another version of
  612. satyricon. Although it is a completely new and refreshing impro, I would =
  613. have
  614. prefered all new music.
