My piece on her book is at http://wlt4.home.mindspring.com/books/holesoul.htm (though it needs some slight revision; for instance, Greil Marcus told me of another error: The Mayflower didn't carry Puritans).

And, for completeness, further related, edited extracts from the log book of=

Capt. Roger Henry Parry -
New York City, 08:40 Friday, April 20, 2001 (01 Palotin; SS Crocodiles)
Today's the day! But still no baby news, no new baby! I've been up a while=20
and have extracted stills from memory and video up to date. Their processing=
=20
remains to be done. My hosts still sleep... Outside, it is another fine day.=
=20
Yesterday (19), I got going around 1100 bound by F Subway train North a=20
couple of stops to 42nd Street. Up at ground level I made my way one block=20
further north and came to the International Center of Photography (1133=20
Avenue of the Americas =3D 6th Avenue; www.icp.org). There before time but I=
=20
soon encountered T, then K armed with a coffee. We made our way in and paid=20
our fee - $8 - and you get a ticket valid for a week! We soon got into the=20
show that we were there for - Behind Closed Doors: The Art of Hans Bellmer.=20
It is 'guest curator'-ed by Therese Lichtenstein. We all three enjoyed it=20
immensely! ...[The French photographer Roger Parry has one snap in the show=20=
- -=20
'untitled (nude woman), 1930 gelatin silver print. Collection of David=20
Raymond, New York'...] We quickly scanned the other shows - Kikki Smith and=20
Men Together. We visited the shop and I got a cheap camera that has four=20
lenses for $38 complete with two films. Then we exited into the sunshine. We=
=20
walked to Grand Union Station and there took lunch in the Oyster Bar and=20
Restaurant... The place is large and it was really doing tremendous business=
=20
over this lunch period. The decibel level was reminiscent of a Hong Kong Dim=
=20
Sum restaurant at the same time of day. After lunch we looked about the=20
magnificent station including trains at tracks. This station is a microcosm=20
of life in NYC... Home, I soon hit the floor for a kip and B me. By the time=
=20
the two of us got out on the street it was approaching 1900. We took a taxi=20
over to Tonic... We entered the foyer and greeted K and T. I soon entered th=
e=20
hallowed hall and there found Derek in the process of preparing a list of th=
e=20
groups for the evening. By the time I got the ball rolling there were two=20
groups decided. There were three or four other ideas written down.=20
Eventually, I made the decision on the third group and then had a quick=20
pow-pow with Derek and the rest up to the interval was settled. The plan for=
=20
after the interval was settled during it - three groups. In the event, it wa=
s=20
with a fourth added, a decision taken by Derek (he thought we were going to=20
finish too early.) The night went as follows (it was not so clear as to whom=
=20
these choices could be assigned) -
1. MW, JC, SF;
2. WG, JB, DB (2 pieces);
3. IST (SHF, MW, RD), JZ;
4. AG, MX, WG;
5. MX, RD;
6. SHF, DB, AG;
7. JC, SHF, JB followed by the intermission;
8. The 'full set', this time 'chosen' by JZ;
9. JB (his choice), MX;
10. RD, MW, AG; and,
11. ('Will's gone to Harlem'), so the six others - DB, JB, JC, SF, MX, JZ.
Besides all the performers, I spoke with our Italian friend, FM, BY again, a=
=20
Dutch-Russian Australian young man keen on alternative living, greeted KN,=20
saw MD. I did not see the S's. I think B enjoyed himself. At the end, I=20
introduced him to Derek. I had free beers all night, though paid twice... Th=
e=20
'sound lady' looked after me well, the mike being on every time I wanted to=20
use it. As there was another show in this space slated for a midnight start,=
=20
B and I left and took a taxi home...=20
00:58 Saturday, April 21, 2001
I got in around 0030... there was news in about 'the baby' on his e-mail. Th=
e=20
message (was) under the subject: 'granddaughter number 3'... =20
The last night (20) of Company went very smoothly, there being a=20
superabundance of ideas for groups. We rapidly established the first six. B=20
came over with me. We took the F train, having left the apartment at about=20
1815... We were far too early to expect to get a drink in Tonic. In a local=20
store, B bought a bottle of Bass for himself and a can of American beer for=20
me. We had to go back to Tonic to consume them as drinking on the streets is=
=20
against the 'open container' laws here! BY explained this to me after the=20
show when he and I went for a beer in a very noisy joint round the corner on=
=20
Rivington. When we got to Tonic, I saw K and T first, about to set-up shop.=20=
T=20
was bound for another show not much later, Ikue Mori... Before the show, Ben=
=20
Watson and his wife... chatted with me. Ben got me a beer. In the interval S=
S=20
greeted me... We soon fixed up a program for the final set... TheCOMPANY=20
night went as follows:=20
01. MX, DB;
02. WG, JC, MW, SF, JB;
03. AG, DB, JB;
04. MX, JC, SF;
05. WG, SF, JB, DB;
06. RD, WG, JC, MW followed by 'a break';
07. Having announced the absence of JZ, 'indisposed' we started with AG,=20
WG...=20
08. JB, MW, RD;=20
09. DB, JC;
10. SF, WG, AG, MW; and,
11. WG, MX, MW, JC, JB, AG, SF, RD, DB (all nine performers that were=20
available for the evening).
