  300. Grillo plays on most of EDMN 1001 and about half of
  301. EDMN 1003. Both are great, but "Medium III" is kind of
  302. the must-hear for Grillo fans. I like EDMN 1005 too.

  305. 'Handicaps' LP on ICP where Altena plays with casts on
  306. on both his broken wrist and the neck of his bass.

  331. recordings come highly recommended. Fujii is very melodic and very intense,
  332.   Dresser is haunting and Black is filling every space with 100 different

  348. There's a third by the trio on her own Libra label as well, 'Looking Out of
  349. the Window.'  Her website (http://www2s.biglobe.ne.jp/~Libra/index_e.html)
  350. says it's available through North Country, but it doesn't appear in the
  351. latest Cadence list.  Anyway, I've heard it and I own the other two.
  352. They're all eminently worthwhile.  The Tzadik release is set apart by
  353. including saxophonist Sachi Hayasaka on three tracks.

  424. I'd say the focus on the Sideshow disc is not too much on soloing, either.
  425. There's very little "blowing" or elaboration.  The Frisell comparison is
  426. appropriate.  Frisell seemed to be ahead of a number of trends on that
  427. particular album - his covers of "pop" material like Madonna and John Hiatt
  428. predate the records released by the likes of Herbie Hancock and Joshua
  429. Redman, when that was the trend du jour (not that that's gone away, either,
  430. with Jason Moran covering Bjork and Brad Mehldau doing Radiohead).

  458. Joey Ramone, lead singer of legendary punk band the Ramones, passed
  459. away at 2:40 p.m. Sunday at the age of 49.

  461. The towering front man, born Jeffrey Hyman, did not respond to
  462. treatment for lymphatic cancer, a disease that attacks the body's
  463. ability to fight infection.
  464.  
  465. Along with his cohorts Johnny, Tommy and Dee Dee ù all of whom
  466. adopted Ramone as a surname ù Joey was credited with helping found
  467. the modern punk movement. In mixing the griminess of the New York
  468. streets with a love of bubblegum pop, '60s girl groups and the
  469. Stooges, the Ramones inspired everyone from the Sex Pistols and the
  470. Clash to Green Day and Blink-182 to stake their turf on four dirty
  471. chords and an (often) inane hook.
  472.  
  473. With his trademark rose-colored shades, black leather jacket,
  474. shoulder-length hair, ripped jeans and alternately snarling and
  475. crooning, hiccoughing vocals, Joey was the iconic godfather of punk.
  476. He gave voice to some of the most revered songs in the punk canon:
  477. "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment," "Rock 'n' Roll High
  478. School," "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker."
  479.  
  480. His profile was indelible.
  481.  
  482. The image of Joey's body, left foot forward, right foot back, left
  483. hand strangling the microphone, fist pumping in the air as he shouted
  484. one of the band's unofficial mantras, "Gabba Gabba Hey!," is forever
  485. imprinted in the minds of any fan who attended one of the band's
  486. 2,263 shows.

  488. Born in the Forest Hills section of Queens, New York, on May 19,
  489. 1952, Joey founded the Ramones in 1974 with Johnny, Dee Dee and
  490. Tommy. Originally the drummer, Joey switched to vocals two months
  491. after the band played it first show in March 1974 at New York's
  492. Performance Studio.

  494. The group soon became a staple at the dingy New York punk club CBGB,
  495. home to fellow downtown bands Talking Heads, Patti Smith and Blondie.
  496. In 1975 the Ramones became the first punk band to sign a record
  497. contract. Their self-titled debut, recorded for $6,000, was released
  498. in 1976 and featured such rock landmarks as "Judy Is a Punk," "Now I
  499. Wanna Sniff Some Glue" and "Beat on the Brat." 
  500.  
  501. Destroying the '70s prog-rock idea that rock had to be played by
  502. learned musicians in full command of their instruments, the Ramones
  503. pioneered the do-it-yourself ideal that inspired thousands of punk
  504. bands with lots of energy but dicey chops to pick up instruments and
  505. rock.
  506.  
  507. Their 1977 album Ramones Leave Home featured a quintessential mix of
  508. gutter-punk anthems and homages to classic pop songs ("I Remember
  509. You," "Oh Oh I Love Her So"). It also featured the unofficial Ramones
  510. anthem "Pinhead," in which Joey sang, "I don't want to be a Pinhead
  511. no more/ I just found a nurse that I could go for."
  512.  
  513. The Ramones not only prodded bands such as the Sex Pistols, the Clash
  514. and X-Ray Spex to take up their instruments and take on the world,
  515. but they also laid the path for the next generation of new wave and
  516. punk bands to rock maximally with minimal flourish. 
  517.  
  518. Inspired by the Ramones' wide-open subject matter ù which ranged from
  519. sniffing glue to male prostitution to lobotomies ù as well as by the
  520. music, '80s bands such as Husker Du, the Replacements and Devo
  521. further exploded the notion of how rock could sound.
  522.  
  523. The Ramones released what is arguably their best album, Rocket to
  524. Russia, in 1977. Featuring such concert staples as "Cretin Hop,"
  525. "Rockaway Beach" and "We're a Happy Family," the album not only
  526. summed up the glum outlook of the punk generation, it was a shrill
  527. counterpoint to the disco music that was sweeping the nation in the
  528. wake of "Saturday Night Fever." After trying their hands at the
  529. movies, starring in 1979's "Rock 'n' Roll High School," the group
  530. entered the studio with one of their idols, '60s' "wall of sound"
  531. producer Phil Spector. The resulting 1980 album, End of the Century,
  532. included a cover of "Baby I Love You" by the Ronettes, who were
  533. fronted by one of Joey's favorite singers, Ronnie Spector (Phil's
  534. ex-wife).

  536. The group followed with 10 more studio albums of speedy, anti-social
  537. punk and a relentless touring schedule, and enjoyed Beatlemania-style

  540. Although the band rarely cracked the album charts and achieved
  541. marginal album sales during a 22-year career, its influence continues
  542. to this day. With most of his contemporaries faded, dead or inactive,
  543. Joey became the embodiment of first-wave punk, with a shy,
  544. soft-spoken manner that belied his band's twisted songs about social
  545. misfits too bored, disconnected or disaffected to play by the rules.

  547. Joey may have shared a last name with his bandmates, but familial
  548. love couldn't keep them from their constant bickering, leading to the
  549. Ramones' dissolution in 1996. After the group played its final show
  550. on August 9, 1996 ù such fans as Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and
  551. Soundgarden's Chris Cornell jammed with the Ramones that night ù Joey
  552. continued to carry the torch for the music he loved.

  554. In addition to producing an EP and an album by horror-ska rockers the
  555. Independents ù whom he tirelessly championed and managed for much of
  556. the late '90s ù Joey co-produced a 1999 EP by his idol Ronnie
  557. Spector.

  559. The EP featured one of Joey's most poignant tunes, "She Talks to
  560. Rainbows," a ballad he wrote for the Ramones' 1995 studio swan song,
  561. Adios Amigos!. It was about a girl Joey would often see in his
  562. neighborhood, who he said looked like she was in her own world.

  564. "She's a little lost girl in her own little world/ She looks so
  565. happy, but seems so sad/ Oh yeah/ I'd like to help her/ I'd like to
  566. try/ Oh yeah," Spector sang in her trademark yearning voice on the
  567. EP.

  569. In addition to trying to help resurrect the career of his hero
  570. Spector, Joey was working on his debut solo album over the past three
  571. years.

  573. Collaborating with long-time Ramones producer Daniel Rey, Ramone had
  574. written nearly 20 new tunes that he planned to record with a band
  575. that included Andy Shernoff of the punk group the Dictators, Cracker
  576. drummer Frank Funaro and Rey on guitar.

  578. Joey kept a low profile over the past few years, jumping onstage to
  579. belt out occasional Ramones songs at birthday parties in his honor
  580. thrown by his punk-rocker friends in New York. In February 2000, he
  581. buried the hatchet with former Ramones drummer Marky Ramone,
  582. recruiting Marky to play on a handful of his solo songs.
