that's weird. do doesn't actually have that much bass in it; it's mostly
high-end. I have a pretty big subwoofer in my apartment, and I get that
effect from a lot of records, especially some of the more recent digital
electronic ones. but I never did with do, and I played it pretty damn loud
some of the times. do you have any Mego or Ritornell records? do you get the
same effect from those?
on the other hand, the Stilluppsteypa/TV Pow record I'm releasing in a few
months will most probably also cause that effect, although not for long.

Subject: Company
Hi all.
I was looking online for my planned weekend trip to NYC on April 19-21,
and look what I found. This has probably already been discussed here,
but a Company week(end) with Zorn, Baron, and Xiao-Fen is perfect for
me.
Question is: Do you go both nights for all 4 sets or find something
else?
COMPANY at TONIC, NYC in April
Tonic Club, 107 Norfolk St., New York City, U.S.A
Thursday April 12: 8pm Derek Bailey solo 10pm Thurston Moore /Loren
M. Connors duo.
Saturday April 14: Susi Ibarra/DB 8 & 10pm
Tuesday April 17: 8pm Will Gaines/DB 10pm IST (
Fell/Davies/Wastell)
Thurs/Fri/Sat April 19,20,21: Company
The people in the Company event are: Derek Bailey, guitar; Joey
Baron, drums/percussion; Rhodri Davies, harp; Simon
Fell, bass; Min Xiao-Fen, pippa; Will Gaines, tap dance; Annie
Gosfield, sampling etc; Mark Wastell, cello; John Zorn,
sax. Everybody plays every night in groups and combinations decided
immediately before the concerts. Probably two
concerts a night; 8 and 10pm.

Not to my knowledge. Razor and Tie put out a similar-minded comp called
Totally Wired. Never heard anything about a World Domination release.
A shame since it is a great, unique comp. I asked the RT people about this
and their response was basically that it was going to be too much trouble
to get the clearances for everything (though since they themselves put out
the original singles, I'm guessing that they meant clearing it with all the
artists, etc).

my favorite zine ever, Opprobrium (priginally based in New Zealand, and now
in the UK) is back in operation after a few years of silence. they're
web-only now, at:
www.info.net.nz/opprobrium
not only is there a new issue, including interviews with Ralf Wehowsky and
Derek bailey, but it looks as if all of the print issues are fully archived
there also. Nick Cain, the editor, writes most of it, and wow, is he
opinionated. what's refreshing, though, even when he completely slams
something (including an Erstwhile or two), he does it from a position of
knowledge, as opposed to most critics.
anyway, I'm only starting to make my way through the new issue now. he
expects to post a new issue every three months, but I wouldn't hold my
breath. it's an amazing resource; well worth your time.

The interview with Bailey is great. Here's a tidbit:
I've noticed your playing getting steadily louder over the last few years.
That's because I've gotten steadily deafer. When I played with Han [Bennink]
in Edinburgh somebody said, "It was great but you were too loud." I said,
"Really? Thank you very much." I can't tell you how much pleasure that gave
me.

Subject: RE: Dave Douglas questions
A couple of answers:
1. Dave's 'Witness' album has been recorded and was originally scheduled for
release in spring. It may, however, be pushed back until fall. As I
mentioned previously, the ensemble expanded from 9 pieces to 11 in the
studio, adding Joe Daley's tuba and Yuka Honda's sampler.
A disc of Dave's three scores for the Trisha Brown Dance Company MIGHT be
released in summer, in conjunction with an appearance at the Lincoln Center
Festival. The would include the stuff by Charms of the Night Sky that was
held from 'A Thousand Evenings,' plus the second suite with Cohen, Greg
Tardy and Susie Ibarra and the third suite which combines the two bands.
The run at Lincoln Center starts July 18, so look out for something around
that time, if it actually happens.
Songlines is due to release the Dave, Misha, Han and Brad Jones disc this
spring as well.
2. I haven't heard the Mosaic set and can't comment, except to say that its
constituent members lead me to anticipate a decent listening experience.
3. The "New Quartet" you heard at Cooper Union is not the one that will be
recording Dave's fourth CD on RCA (which is counting Witness but not the
Trisha Brown set, which is being treated as a non-jazz release and thus not
part of his "jazz department" contract). The "New Quintet" will be
recording that fourth album: Chris Potter, Uri Caine, James Genus and
Clarence Penn. It's the band that played for a week at the Vanguard not too
long ago, and you can hear 4/5s of the band this Saturday at Wall-to-Wall
Miles Davis (Antonio Hart subbing for Potter).

This article appeared in the New York Daily News:
Ramone's Battle for Health
One of New York's original punk rockers is fighting for his life. Joey
Ramone, 49, lead singer of the Ramones, a band out of Forest Hills that
spearheaded the downtown punk scene in 1974, is in a New York-area
hospital
battling lymphoma.
The group, which Joey formed with Marky, Dee Dee and Johnny =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=

whom
adopted the same last name as the band =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9D broke up onl=

But
the mark they left on the genre, due in large measure to their early
albums =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9D
which featured such tracks as "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Teenage Lobotomy"
and
"Cretin Hop" =C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9D are forever part of New York musical h=

Ramones spokesman Arturo Vega told me that the patient has had a good

"Joey watched a tape of 'The Sopranos' on Wednesday," said Vega. "He's

Hi, a while ago someone here pointed out some articles/interviews which
contain Wynton's ideas of what jazz is (i.e. jazz must include swing/blues,
freejazz guys are throwing away their roots, etc...) At the time I was very
hasty to get rid of any link to them as quickly as possible, but now I'm
kind of curious to read them again, does anyone know where I can find them?

It's not out yet. The music is spectacular, blending several of the
different strands of Dave's various bands quite organically, with a fairly
potent political agenda that nonetheless does not overpower the music. But
I'm sure the disc will be quite different than the gig I saw. For starters,
the tunes had to be truncated to get them all on a single disc.

I read an interview with him in the January Time Out (London) which I no
longer have where, to his credit, he appeared less like a nazi and more like
just a whiner. He made a comment to the effect of: I have no problem with
those cats doing their thing down there in the village, but jazz has not
always been just about innovation--there's a strong aspect of traditionalism
to it, and it's a shame if people are too strongly for/opposed to one or the
other. (His thought, not mine.)
Maybe he's just reactionary and tracks-covering, but at least he's not
defacing Miles anymore. The REAL issue stands to be that to many people (and
most of the people with the $$ to support the music), he IS jazz right now.
Wish I could find the article.
