  37. i have to agree w/ christina here. i find thurston's work a helluva lot more 
  38. interesting than many other "masters" of "improv" because half the time he 
  39. appears to be throwing himself into a situation and just GOING for it, w/out 
  40. ever really worrying about his technical "ability." i remember ct. sax 
  41. blower paul flaherty telling me after playing a gig w/ thurston that he 
  42. couldn't believe what kind of energry thurston brought to the set. if you've 
  43. ever seen flaherty, you'll know that for him to be amazed at someone else's 
  44. energy, we've gotta be talking about A LOT of energy. similarly, the trio i 
  45. saw w/ thurston/wally shoup/toshi makihara was fuggin' sick, thurston played 
  46. w/out any pedals and basically created huge waves of sound which drove shoup 
  47. and makihara to incredible hights. i don't know, i just think to knock the 
  48. validity of somebody's improvisation because they also happen to be in a 
  49. popular rock band and don't sound just like everyone else a little 
  50. counter-productive. it's about expressing the self and being a part of this 
  51. music, like christina said. whatever someone wants to bring to the table is 
  52. completely valid. and of course, this is all just my opinion, so argue 
  53. away...

  105. Thanks, that is another one I will try to look for. I remember a thread 
  106. about these groups from several years ago, but I had no idea what any of 
  107. these groups were then. As for the 16-17 Cd, I guess I lucked out, because I 
  108. found it used at Aquarius here in SF not too long ago -- maybe 4 or 5 months 
  109. - -- and it was only 8 bucks.
  110.  
  111. Anyway, my question is if anyone knows how to find the God album 
  112. "Possession," from 1992. The lineup looks interesting (Tim Hodgkinson, John 
  113. Zorn, Justin K. Broadrick, Lou Ciccotelli, Kevin Martin, etc.). Of course 
  114. good lineups don't always make good albums, but I also knew someone who 
  115. mentioned this as being an all-time favorite, and he doesn't even like Zorn 
  116. (unfortunately that person has moved, or I would ask them). So ... anyone? 
  117. Or does anyone want to trade?

  154. well, it's tough for any record to live up to the raw energy of the groups I 
  155. saw play in the Gospel tent at the New Orleans Jazz Festival the two times I 
  156. went. the Mighty Clouds of Joy were especially mind-blowing, but the records 
  157. I picked up afterwards weren't nearly as good.

  159. two that are pretty great, though, are both Specialty/Fantasy reissues. Sam 
  160. Cooke with the Soul Stirrers, and a compilation, Greatest Gospel Gems, 
  161. including Cooke, Dorothy Love Coates, Pilgrim Travellers, and Original Five 
  162. Blind Boys Of Alabama, to name a few. great stuff!

  165. later years compilation on Columbia, which I wasn't blown away by. any 
  166. recommendations for killer early Mahalia?

  179. In my opinion, all three of the God albums are incredible, but they are =
  180. impossible to find.  I heard them five years ago, but as soon as I went to =
  181. buy them, Big Cat had gone out of business, and I've been searching ever =
  182. since.  I'd like to know too.  I've never found them used, I haven't met =
  183. anyone that has them.  I have "Appeal to Human Greed," which are remixes =
  184. of "Anatomy of Addiction" by Laswell, JK Broadrick, Kevin Shields and a =
  185. couple others that I can't remember now.  It's good, but it doesn't do the =
  186. original line-up any justice whatsoever.   Anyway, that's as much as I =
  187. know, and I wish almost every day that I had the albums.

  260. only to find that the only person in world for whom

  286. This seems kind of cabalistic.  What spirit?  And who
  287. is to say what spirit?  It would seem that the
  288. artist-hero(ine) would be the only one to say.  SO why
  289. play in front of people at all, if a response is not
  290. expected?  And why court only positive
  291. comments/flattery?  Milan Kundera writes about
  292. improvising at the piano when he was a child, playing
  293. a pedal tone and a repeating pattern over and over
  294. into ecstatic infinite crescendo.  His father came
  295. along and applied the smackdown, saying, "Stop that
  296. goddamned noise!" or some such thing.  I think the
  297. story was meant to a.) insult Keith Jarrett, and b.)
  298. acknowledge that playing and listening are two
  299. separate activities, and enjoying an activity is not
  300. the same as enjoying hearing that activity.  No
  301. revelation there, except that "that spirit" would seem
  302. to be to be elusive.  If "expression" is all that's
  303. important, then it would seem that listeners are put
  304. into a position of subserviance to the
  305. artist-hero(ine)-peformer.  When I play out, it really
  306. gets me down to have a room full of dunces enjoying my
  307. work.  It makes me want to develop a heroin habit.

  321. Mike Patton (I really think ADULT THEMES is hilarious

  382. Regarding the sometimes personal and subjective nature of "discoveries," I
  383. once played drums in a band in Houston with a mutual friend of mine and
  384. Christina's, a fantastic guitarist named Ramon Medina who's gone on to some
  385. more interesting projects.  We made one hell of an unholy racket, and I
  386. thought it was completely new and original.  I was convinced that soon
  387. people everywhere would know the name Rumpleforeskin.  Then I heard my first
  388. Pussy Galore record, and it all came crashing down.  We weren't doing
  389. anything new at all, just a combination of PG-style sludge and Einsturzende
  390. Neubauten industrial clangor.  It was fun but incredibly derivative.  The
  391. group soon disbanded, and, like I said, the guitarist found better things to
  392. do.

  398. Excellent essentials list, by the way.  Glad to see another late-model Talk
  399. Talk fan out there.  Do you know the Mark Hollis solo disc?  Exquisite.  As
  400. for the Shostakovich Quartets, I hear better things about the Borodin
  401. Quartet's recordings of them, but they can be harder to find.  The Emersons
  402. do the job nicely for me.  And in the Debussy Preludes, Pollini is fine
  403. indeed, but I think I'd give an edge to Paul Jacobs, who is a bit less
  404. clinical and more poetic.  (No one can touch Pollini's Schoenberg,
  405. though...)

  450. I don't want to oppose my views to Christina's at all,
  451. just to clarify; I just wanted some of these
  452. statements about artistic license/privilege to be
  453. elaborated, or otherwise expounded upon.  Listening to
  454. Christina's exceptionally evocative work with
  455. Charalambides would seem to me to accomplish this, but
  456. I think it's still all too easy to fall back on 19th
  457. century ways of talking about creative (social)
  458. energies.  I think in practice and in theory, she's
  459. onto all kinds of things that I'd like to dig, but
  460. we're necessarily not yet on the same page.

  469. versions.  One review of the Pollini rightly
  470. emphasized the urgency and emotional renedring the
  471. Schoenberg's, giving the lie to the common notion that
  472. his music is "daunting" or "over-intellectual", or
  473. otherwise cold.  Listening to those early pan-tonal
  474. and serial excursions, I felt quite a bit like Anthony
  475. Braxton described himself (cf. FORCES IN
  476. MOTION)feeling when heard the same music: it's
  477. physical, and emotional, and intellectual as well,
  478. it's feeling that one is opening up, opening into
  479. something bigger than one's self.
