  101. Buess and Wertmuller through their band 16-17. I would guess it might sound 
  102. something like a cross between 16-17 and Last Exit -- would that be 
  103. accurate? Anyhow, thanks for mentioning it. I should probably track this 
  104. down.

  106. Also, for anyone into Painkiller, Flying Luttenbachers or other harsh 
  107. jazz-metal-whatever, 16-17's 'Gyatso' is worth a listen, although it may be 
  108. hard to find. It has G.C. Green (Godflesh) on bass and is produced by Kevin 
  109. Martin (God, Ice, etc.), which means there are roundabout Zorn connections, 
  110. too. . . .

  140. This is one of my favorite discs-- I keep returning to it. I don't know what
  141. 16-17 is/was-- but the Sprawl is textured like violent geologic landscapes.
  142. Not all screaming aggression either. The opening track uses a loping single
  143. note bass-line that occurs at intervals, and it acts like an anchor for
  144. everything around it, big electronic washes pouring over it, sections of sax
  145. blow-out, thunderous drum segments, layers of effects,-- Overall it's very
  146. beautiful, very free, very memorable.

  276. There is a recording recently released by new world which has Tudor
  277. performing his _rainforest II_ while Cage performs _Mureau_.  the title
  278. Mureau comes from a combination of "music" and "thoreau" since the
  279. composition was created by subjecting thoreau's statements about music and
  280. silence to a series of I-Ching operations.  The words are not actually
  281. present only syllables/vocables.  I don't know if there is a recording of
  282. Mureau alone.  this recording is a double disc.

  479. Sadly, no.  He has, hoever, played with Roy Nathanson and the Jazz Passnegers 
  480. gang.  He's also hooked up a few times with the Mingus Big Band.  It's only a 
  481. matter of time before he's singing with Masada.

  494. Band_ (as in DaDa), eccentric london band formed in the 60's, had a hit =
  495. with their version of "the Monster Mash" and  paved the way for Monty =
  496. Python and the Rutles. totally wacko bunch with that london ironic wit =
  497. mocking all sorts of musical styles, especially the beatles, often they =
  498. had a roaring 20's band sound to them.  Very much Dr. Demento fare.

  556. Thanks for the description. as for 16-17, they were/are a Swiss group that 
  557. formed in the early-mid '80s with Alex Buess from Sprawl on saxophone, a guy 
  558. named Knut Remond on drums (originally) and a guitarist whose name I can't 
  559. remember at the moment. Michael Wertumller from Spawl is their drummer now, 
  560. and they also have a bassist now. Anyway, like I mentioned before, some of 
  561. these guys have played with ICE, God, members of Godflesh, etc. Which brings 
  562. them to some connection with Zorn since Zorn played on one of the God albums 
  563. (Possession, which I can't find anywhere...) and some of the Godflesh guys 
  564. played with Painkiller.
  565.  
  566. I have seen 16-17's name pop up in conjunction with Naked City and 
  567. Painkiller, in terms of comparisons. I have also seen mention of them as 
  568. predating NC/Painkiller in terms of combining free jazz and 
  569. punk/hardcore/noise influences, but I doubt they were an actual influence 
  570. since their releases were pretty small-scale, for one thing. Their first 
  571. real CD didn't come out til '94. And it's not really too similar to Naked 
  572. City or even Painkiller at all. 16-17 has the really abrasive saxophone 
  573. thing in common (more abrasive than Zorn actually), but the rhythms are much 
  574. more grinding and repetitive, and almost "industrial"-sounding. 'Gyatso' 
  575. (the '94 Cd) is some pretty nasty stuff.
  576.  
  577. Maybe Atavistic will start a "Unknown Legends of Swiss Industrial Free Jazz" 
  578. series to go along with their "Unknown Legends of Swiss Electroacoustic 
  579. music" series (that always makes me laugh), and then reissue some of these 
  580. guys' other stuff or something.
