And a damned fine 1999 date, at that. I'm pretty darn impressed with this
one so far... a good blowing session for Evan, not full-blown all the time,
but nicely shaded. The sound is much better than I'd expected, which is an
added bonus - Guy sounds very clear, and the two drummers are spearated left
and right. One of the stronger issues I've heard this year, I think.

I was at first also a bit disappointed with the 2nd Music For Children
release. But now I think this CD is worth the money just for Ribot's
guitar on "Blues For Tiki" and Zorn's sax on track 10 (can't recall the
title).

Yes, but the older recording suffer quite seriously on the technical side.
The CBS recordings are really good.

How 'bout it's more interesting than *any * music of
Mike Patton?
Top 10s change with the years, but let me note three
sessions which have stood the test of time and deserve
to be in *every* thinking music person's collection.
Very simple:
Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus (Candid)
The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady - Charles Mingus
(Impulse!)
Mingus Ah Um -- Charles Mingus(Columbia)

The Seattle Chamber Players (SCP) with John Zorn played in the
Nordstrom Recital Hall in Seattle's new Benaroya Hall. The Recital
Hall is considerable smaller than the main hall, only seating 540
people, but was more or less sold out. The acoustics there are
fantastic, none of the performers were amplified and it was all
crystal clear even in the rear where I was. I had seen Horvitz 4+1+4
(the additional four being the SCP) here about a year ago from about
the 6th row and I can saw that the clarity from the rear was just as
good. Only a volume difference, which proved to be advantageous for
the sonic assault of the Zorn Improvisation.
'Cat O' Nine Tails' opened the show. A fantastic piece that I had
seen Kronos play just nine months ago (with Masada playing the same
event the day before, a good year in Seattle for Zorn fans). The
Kronos performance was superior overall than the SCP performance, but
in all fairness Zorn did compose CONT for Kronos, and they have
played it many times. The SCP warmed up to the piece quite a bit
about half way through, and from that point on the performance was
perfectly acceptable.
Following CONT was 'Shibboleth' which was new to me (as was pretty
much the rest of the nights repertoire). This tune featured very
subtle harpsichord and the first of several tunes to feature the
fantastic percussion of Matthew Kocmieroski. During this piece
Matthew shuffled cards and broke small sticks, as well as playing an
assortment of tuned cymbals and standard percussion drums and such.
This piece was very quite and subdued, but totally engaging. It was
the only one where I wish I was a little closer to the action in
order to capture more details.
For the first two pieces Zorn sat in the far left seat of the front
row, but for the 'Selections from Masada' he came onto stage and sat
on the floor in front of the Flautist and Clarinetist. The piano was
to the left and the percussionist only played on the last tune. Zorn
somewhat subtly conducted the performance, and perhaps directed some
improvisation. I am not very familiar with the Masada Songbook and
only the last number sounded familiar to me. I thought that it was
clear though that Zorn was very engaged in this translation of this
music to this medium. I'm not entirely sure if it was the 2nd or 3rd
tune that was solo flute, but I really liked that piece quite a bit.
The final included the percussionist, playing only a hand drum.
'Music for Children' was easily my favorite piece of the evening.
The percussion work was fantastic. Kocmieroksi beat on a vinyl stool
with a bamboo switch, poured rice or gravel onto cymbals, snapped
thin wood in half, played BB's in bowls, played tuned Chinese gongs
and the usual percussion drums and cymbals. The timing and
interaction of the percussion and the piano and violin was
incredible. The piece was dark (music for abused children as a
friend put it) but very complex and completely engaging. I will most
certainly seek out the recording of this piece.
Next up was the only performance of Zorn this evening. He walked on
stage wearing camo pants (the same as when I saw Masada) with a box
of spare reeds. He then proceeded to deliver a continuous sonic
assault punctuated only by two changes of reeds. This is really hard
to describe but it was loud, multitonal and very powerful. I would
say that Zorn played about 15-20 min total including a long segment
muting the sax on his thigh. I found this blistering assault to be a
refreshing change to the restraint the other peices displayed. Plus
it was amusing to see the season ticket holders cupping there ears
and even a few walkouts.
Those that left missed a great piece featuring four clarinetists. A
small clarinet, two normal size and a bass clarinet was the
instrumentation. The piece was very nice, classical with a
swing/Klezmer feel to it. A nice capper to the evening.
So all in all a great nice of good music in a beautiful hall. The
only disappointment was that original listings had Zorn leading one
of his game pieces 'Rugby'. As a big fan of the game pieces I was
looking forward to this. I don't know why it wasn't performed.

PAINKILLER is to me an excellent group, and EXECUTION GROUND is a great
album. Now, do you have the EXECUTION GROUND or the COMPLETE STUDIO
RECORDINGS (they both get confused since the COMPLETE COLLECTION has the
EXECUTION GROUND album cover).
Anyway, I think it's very good, specially the whole mix of free jazz,
grindocre, dub, ambient ... it's just very intense.
I think one of the best places in the internet to read about the album is
from this excellent BILL LASWELL discography:

Also, check the TZADIK website (www.tzadik.com) for info on this and other
