  132. Since the wonderful Genet is currently being discussed
  133. here, I thought that maybe some of you would like to
  134. drop a few lines on Marguerite Duras.
  135.  
  136. I particularly have some mixed feelings about her
  137. work. Whilst I love "Le ravissement de Lol V. Stein"
  138. or "l'amant", I found "Yann Andrea Steiner" such a
  139. tough reading. Sometimes it's hard to figure out
  140. whether her images are mainly rethorical resources or
  141. symbolisms that scape my understanding. Furthermore,
  142. her phrasing, always brief and using a clear language,
  143. comprises so much information in just one sentence
  144. that following the plot -if any- requires absolute
  145. concentration.
  146. However, I consider Duras one of the most remarkable
  147. writers of the already past century, who built an
  148. absolutely personal body of work throughout her life.
  149. On the other hand, Zorn's tribute is IMHO one of his
  150. most beautiful and haunting compositions.

  169. recording angel' by john schott which is an amzing bit
  170. of work - anyone else know it ?  are his other discs
  171. worth tracking down ?

  174. rothenberg, j.d. parran and robert dick) and i have
  175. been alsolutely floored by it. their version of
  176. ornette's 'beauty is a rare thing' has rarely been out
  177. of my player the last week. i'm fairly certain they've
  178. recorded other albums but have no idea what....also i
  179. seem to remember robert dick doing an album of hendrix
  180. tunes (on flute) - anyone familiar with it or other
  181. new winds stuff ?

  279. learning the piano and associated instruments, I
  280. believe he wrote REtrovertigo. I think he's just

  313. "The Big Gundown" for the track featuring Diamanda Galas; then started
  314. listening to other recordings and bought Painkiller: Execution Ground.
  315. Is information of this album and it's content/music available on the 
  316. internet? How do you people feel about this work?

  387. Since no one else replied I guess I'll temporarily de-lurk and 
  388. comment on this album.
  389.  
  390. I just got this late last week and have probably listened to it 1/2 a 
  391. dozen times, mostly at night as I am going to sleep.  I have listened 
  392. to it on headphones once (yesterday actually)  I think that it is a 
  393. beautiful album with fantastic singing from Aiko and subtle, moving 
  394. and powerful playing from those involved.  Clearly Eyvind Kang is a 
  395. major collaborator on this album, playing on nearly all tracks, and 
  396. solo on one.  This album presents more of Kang's subtler side, with 
  397. modern neoclassical overtones.  More 'Story of Iceland' than '7 
  398. NADEs'.  Aiko's compositions, singing and playing are all fantastic. 
  399. The lyrics are Japanese (it is a member of the 'New Japan' series 
  400. after all) which really just accentuates its dream-like, even 
  401. childlike qualities to me.  They are like lullabies in a consistent 
  402. made up language.  Obviously I can't comment on their content, but in 
  403. a songs as music context they work well. My feeling on the album 
  404. overall: dreamlike songs, with skilled, appropriate and subtle music, 
  405. that reveals further depth with repeated listening's.
  406.  
  407. As for buying it for the Bill Frisell playing, I think that that 
  408. depends a lot on your perspective.  It is not a Frisell showpiece, 
  409. nor does it feature any compositions by him.  He also only plays on 
  410. the last two tracks.  His playing is wonderful, and fits in very well 
  411. in these pieces.  His playing is in that layered soundscape style of 
  412. recent albums, 'Ghost Town' in particular.  The last tune on the 
  413. album, a 9min+ excursion that features Bill playing "backward Guitar" 
  414. that I think is really quite wonderful.  So basically as a Bill 
  415. Frisell fan (which I certainly am, as well as Eyvind Kang which is 
  416. what led me to this album) I would think that you would have to have 
  417. interest in music that interests Bill. If dreamy music with sweet 
  418. songs and good playing, with occasional Bill backing  sounds 
  419. appealing than go for it.  I love this album, and it will certainly 
  420. remain in my nightplaying list for a good long while.
