  56. Wasn't Genet renouned for being a criminal. I'm under the impression that he lived his life in opposition to as many laws and social standards as possible. Almost as though he created his own system of norms even if he didn't agree with his own questioning.

  92. A criminal not taken seriously by the tough ones. In their words, Genet was
  93. just a "demi-sel" (a wanna look tough). Read the excellent bio by White.

  121. I did and it is impressive. I am not surprised of all the prizes that that
  122. bio received. White does a great job at making Genet humane (and it is hard
  123. with all the myth surrounded him). You start to like the man despite his
  124. swaggering and desperate attempt at looking like a big criminal. The bio is 
  125. maybe weaker as far as Genet's literary value, but since the man is what was
  126. so mysterious (and not his style on which many people have written ad nausea),
  127. this bio was more than welcome.

  152. Which is a real shame, as those recordings are one of the monuments of
  153. recording industry - quite a rare initiative to record a living's artist
  154. entire works. And some of it is incredibly played - for exapmle, i'e never
  155. heard a version of petroushka that comes close to the composer's version

  212. I notice that among your several excellent Frith
  213. recordings, solo albums appear to conspicuously
  214. absent.  I only have the GUITAR SOLOS compact disc
  215. reissue on ESD, but it's ridiculous: Frith plays
  216. guitar with layers of effects, preparations, extended
  217. technique, etc.  A couple tracks are guitaristic
  218. fingerbusters, but most of them are soundscapes, rough
  219. amplified-garbage-cans noise, abrasive shriek, and
  220. meditative shifting clamor.  Beautiful.  I love to
  221. listen to this beside solo "guitar" albums by Keith
  222. Rowe, Burkhard Stangl, Derek Bailey (IMPROVISATION
  223. [the album], yum...), Henry Kaiser, Kevin Drumm, and
  224. maybe Haino Keiji, to remind me much has yet to be
  225. said on the instrument, if not the instrument-as-such.

  249. best. folk tinged manic dance music, plus a beautiful
  250. ritual slaughtering of 'Dancing in the Streets'.
  251. 'Guitar Solos' - dunno if you can get it anymore, but
  252. jawdropping solo guitar (difficult to believe it's
  253. solo - eat your heart out Steve Vai) from 1974. 
  254. 'Two Gentlemen from Verona' w/Chris Cutler - free
  255. improv but loads of tunes and rhythm playing.
  256. 'Later' w/Mark Dresser, Ikue Mori - variation on the
  257. Death Ambient trio but a bit more colourful. Very
  258. nice.

  346. band called AOA which eye is currently involved with.
  347. a 7 piece band i think.they played what i  guess you'd
  348. call trance ( not what i usually listen to). they
  349. played the music live though ie w/ 2 guitars, 2 or
  350. three percussionists and 2 other guys triggering
  351. electronics and samples. very energetic and it was
  352. amazing how long they kept it up for.

  443. Warner Music Group) has been showing some of the most foresight and
  444. fortitude of late-delving into DVD Audio and, now,
  445. launching a promising contemporary music series, "New Line."
  446.  
  447. In a sense, the Teldec series touches upon the virtues and vexations of t=
  448. wo
  449. related major-label offerings. Like Deutsche
  450. Grammophon's lauded "20/21" series, "New Line" boasts ambitious A&R and
  451. high-grade production values, sonically and
  452. visually. And "New Line" picks up the ball that Sony Classical dropped by
  453. featuring five discs' worth of music by Gy=F6rgy Ligeti
  454. (an acclaimed edition of whose music was aborted by Sony a couple of year=
  455. s
  456. ago).

  458. The first five "New Line" titles will see light in April in Europe, with
  459. three more to follow there in the fall. Due May 15, the first
  460. U.S. releases include Grammy-nominated guitarist Sharon Isbin in Christop=
  461. her
  462. Rouse's Concert de Gaudi and Tan Dun's guitar
  463. concerto, YI2. Also in that batch is Bang on a Can's Lost Objects: A
  464. Transmusicart Project, as well as a collection devoted to
  465. hot young German composer Matthias Pintscher that includes music from his
  466. opera Thomas Chatterton, with baritone Dietrich
  467. Henschel and conductor Christoph Eschenbach.

  469. The first Ligeti set appears June 19, with the Piano Concerto, Chamber
  470. Concerto, Melodien, and Mysteries of the Macabre
  471. (the latter a work for trumpet and orchestra extracted from his opera Le
  472. Grand Macabre). The conductor is Dutch new-music
  473. ace Reinbert de Leeuw, and the piano soloist is Pierre-Laurent Aimard, a
  474. 1998 Grammy nominee for his Sony set of Ligeti's
  475. Etudes. Also coming June 19 is Luigi Nono's Al Gran Sole Carico d'Amore, =
  476. a
  477. large-scale vocal/orchestral "stage action" led by
  478. Lothar Zagrosek. And on June 26 the Bang on a Can album will appear on DV=
  479. D
  480. Audio, joining a host of other Teldec titles
  481. rolled out by Warner (including Aimard's Grammy-nominated Messaien Vingt
  482. Regards).

  484. Future "New Line" sets are to include Sir Harrison Birtwistle's Pulse
  485. Shadows and the Gidon Kremer-led After Schubert, an
  486. homage to the great Viennese composer via the pens of some successors.
  487. Future Ligeti titles will feature major vocal and
  488. orchestral works, including several premieres.

  490. According to Arthur Moorhead, VP of associated labels for Atlantic Record=

  492. "New Line" has been in the works for years. "A
  493. contemporary music series is a real challenge to get off the ground, " he
  494. says, "but I'm so impressed with what Hamburg has
  495. done. I've seen several Teldec administrations over the years-all with th=

  497. strengths-but I think [Teldec chief] Martin Sauer is
  498. finally the man to do something in the contemporary realm. I don't think
  499. this is just lip service-new music is a real passion for
  500. him."

  502. Although its big names and alluring covers make marketing "New Line" far
  503. easier, Teldec isn't "counting on selling tens of
  504. thousands" of such adventurous records, Moorhead says. "Still, it's high
  505. time that Teldec-a label that made its name with early
  506. music-has a series to provide a focus on the music of our time."

  545. One of my favorites that I don't see on your list, and that I don't think
  546. anyone else has mentioned, is That Previous Evening, a collection of three
  547. hommages to the 'New York School' (Cage, Feldman, and Brown).  Each of the
  548. pieces is in the style of its hommagee, and they are all wonderful.  The
  549. Cage piece has the kinds of stories that Cage told in Indeterminacy
  550. (although the voices are all Fred), the Feldman piece is a very quiet one
  551. for piano and electronics, and the Brown piece is more chaotic. =20

  589. It's been quite a common practice of late to spot the artists that have
  590. influenced certain Mr. Bungle tracks i.e. the Beach Boys for Air-Conditioned
  591. Nightmare or Taraf De Haidouks for Ars Moriendi... The Holy Filament
  592. (written by Trevor Dunn) strikes me as one from the California album that
  593. doesn't have such a clear link to other artists. But perhaps one of you
  594. people with your extensive music collections know better... Obviously it has
  595. familiar parts, but is there anything out there that has a really striking
  596. similarity to it? Or anything close?
