Can`t understand their inclusion for Victoriaville.
I saw them a couple of months ago .........a real disappointment !!.
I`m sure Frisell has more interesting projects than this trio.

Can't comment on the worth of some of the projects
there this year, but what stood out most for me was
the complexion of the various show.
With all that's happening, it seems that the Victo
braintrust was unable to find even one project headed
by African Americans worthy of inclusion.

that does look to be the case. however, a quick count comes up with the
musicians of eleven different countries represented. anyone know how many
were represented in the Vision Festival last year?
personally, if the Wu-Tang Clan were closing the festival, I'd be way more
psyched about it. I'm guessing that's not who Ken has in mind, though.

Listers,
I am going to Japan for the first time
in March and I have a few questions:
1) I plan on seeing Haino Keiji in Tokyo with
a drummer called Sabu Toyozumi. Does anybody
know anything about Sabu?
2) Is there a listing of Japanese venues or
gigs besides the Japanese Improvisers page?
3) I also want to see Kazutoki Umezu's band
KIKI. Any comments about this group.
4) Lastly, any info on how to cheaply get around
or cheap hotels would be great.
Thanks

Sabu is one of the famous Japanese improvising percussionists.
I have seen him playing with Misha Mengelberg, Milt Hinton,
Peter Broetzmann, Sunny Murray, Joseph Jarman, etc.

In English, this page is the best:
http://www.japanimprov.com/index.html
You can also buy CDs of Japanese improvising music.

About Jazz-spot, you had better go to:
Shinjuku Pit-inn (from mainstream to Avant-garde)
In-"F" (You can easily speak with famous improvisers)

There are few pages of such interest in English (many in Japanese).

Subject: Laswell remixing again
Hello Zornlisters!
After a long, long break I decided to check my mailbox. And I found an
interesting e-mail from Laswell mailing list (laswell@yahoogroups.com):
Subject: [laswell] Tony Williams' Lifetime Remix news
From: Philip Clarkson <phil@clarksonp.demon.co.uk>
Just read this in the new issue of the UK magazine "Jazzwise" : "Reports
of jaws being scraped off the carpet follow sneak previews of Bill
Laswell's sonic overhaul of Tony Williams' Lifetime's "Turn It Over"
sessions that follow up his stunning Miles Davis "Panthalassa"
'reconstruction' project. Tracks like "Right On" have been restored to
their full length, while over 20 minutes of additional unreleased
material has been added, including "Do That" featuring some of John
McLaughlin's most hostile guitar ever captured on tape"
Laswell's admiration for Tony Williams' work is widely known. And as I
liked Laswell's work on Panthalassa (but not Panthalassa remixes!) I
think this new project will be worth checking.

Subject: Derek Bailey - please recommend
Hello Zornlisters!
Recently, we had a discussion on Cecil Taylor and his music. Now, I
think it may be interesting, to recommend some records of Mr Taylor's
friend and long time collaborator - Derek Bailey.
I am personally intersted in such recommendations, because I know Derek
Bailey's work only from three records: Arcana - _The Last Wave_ (I love
it), _Mirakle_ (with Tacuma and Weston) and _Guitar, Drums 'n' Base_ .
Of course, I heard some single tracks from different records (for
example - "air mail collaboration" with Han Bennink), but I want to dig
into Mr Bailey's music a little bit more. So please tell me, what else
should I listen to.
Regards and thanks in advance

Subject: Re: Derek Bailey - please recommend
I think with Derek Bailey, once you decide you 'like' him - assuming you do,
since you have 3 things and want some more - it's a matter of deciding what
you want to heard him reacting to, since his basic approach is fairly
similar, in a broad sense, throughout his recorded career.
The fun thing about this is that there's a lot to choose from. I'd say his
stuff with drummers and percussionists is pretty essential. There are at
least 4 discs of duets with Han Bennink: one on Organ of Corti from 1974,
which is pretty low-fi, but great, definitely the strangest. HAN, from '86,
is from a tour, and consists of 2 30 minute chunks from concerts on that
tour. Then there are the two 'improv by post' discs, one of which you said
that you've heard a bit from. Also, there's an astounding 2 disc set with
Tony Oxley, consisting of 1 very-well-recorded disc from 1977 and 1 from a
concert in '95.
There's two discs of stuff with Ruins, which are interesting as there one
with each of the last two bassists that hvae been in Ruins. They are pretty
high-energy and awesome. There's a great duo disc with Jamie Muir,
percussionist perhaps most 'famous' for being on King Crimson's 'Larks
Tongues in Aspic.' There's also a 3 -dsc retrospective set of his work with
Iskra 1903, I think his last 'regular' working trio, with Paul Rutherford and
Barry Guy. Audio on that is a little shaky, but still worth it, as the music
is sublime. Arch Duo is a duet with Evan Parker, enjoyable if you like the
work of both improvisors. Then there's the duo with Cecil Taylor,
Pleistozaen Mit Wasser, which you might be aware of from your reference, and
a duo with Keiji Haino, 'drawing closer, atunning...', which is the
'strangest' to me, as Haino plays with almost an exclusively cleanish tone
throughout.
THEN there's the solo discs usually exclusively acoustic, of which I know
four: Domestic and Public Pieces (1975), Aida (1980 - his most 'famous'?),
Lace (1989) and Takes Fakes and Dead She Dances (1996?) Generally, with the
solo discs, the recording quality improves with passing years, though its
never bad enough as to be distracting, in my opnion.
I think that covers the stuff with which I'm familiar. Hope it helps.

If you like Arcana you should also listen to the both discs with The Ruins
"Saisoro" (Tzadik) and "Tohjinbo" (Paratactile) and the 3-CD-Set with Pat
Metheny, Gregg Bendian and Paul Wertico "The Sign of 4" (Knitting Factory) -
high-energy improvisation.
Generally I prefer the records with a more sensitive appeal.
On some energy-stuff of the last years (e.g. Mirakle) Bailey doesn┤t play really
TOGETHER with his companions (to my ears).
My favourites:
SOLO: "Domestic & Public Pieces" (Emanem) 1975-1977
"Aida" (Dexter┤s Cigar) 1980
"Lace" (Emanem) 1989
DUO w/: Joelle Leandre "No Waiting" (Potlatch) 1997
Barre Phillips "Figuring" (Incus) 1987/88
Anthony Braxton "Moment Precieux" (Victo) 1986
Min Xiao-Fen "Viper" (Avant) 1997
TRIO: ISKRA 1903 "Chapter One 1970-1972" (Emanem)
- one of the best european improvisation ever
J. Zorn / George Lewis "Yankees" (Celluloid/Charly) 1983
John Stevens / Kent Carter "One Time" (Incus) 1992
- my all-time favourite
Hope it helps.

The 2nd part is Anthony Braxton's "Ghost trance musics".

Hello,
I don't have the best knowledge of Bailey's work as I still have to fully
explore it, but I find it strange that _Harras_ (Avant) was not mentionned
yet. In my opinion, it is really a nice record. Ok, maybe it's not really a
Bailey's record, but still very nice. I enjoy it more than _Yankees_,
although they are kind of different even though Zorn is playing on both.
I don't know if it was reissued on cd, but there is an album with Dave
Holland on cello that I like a lot. It's called _Improvisations for Cello and
Guitar_. I forget the label at the moment though... The Braxton/Bailey duo
_Live at Wigmor Hall_ has its moments too.
Somebody mentionned a duo record with Jamie Muir and one with Evan Parker. It
reminds of the Music Improvisation Company album with Bailey, Parker, Muir,
Hugh Daviesa dn Christian Jeffrey. This one also has its moments.
By the way, anybody knows is some of these are available on cd?
Hope it helps,
Mathieu

Subject: Re: Derek Bailey - please recommend
Hi everyone!
I also dig Derek Bailey, specially in a group context,
such as "Harras" or Mirakle. Also liked his
collaboration with the Ruins a lot. But it is
sometimes hard for me to discern where quality ends
and free improv starts just for the sake of it. By
this I mean that, for instance, his duet with Min-Xiao
Fen, which has been recommended by someone, is
something really hard to listen to. Even harder is
trying to spot real interplay between the two
performers. This you can apply to other duets
including Bailey.
My latest acquisition of his was the duet w/ Susie
Ibarra on Incus, "Daedal". It's not that bad, and
Ibarra is one of my favorite drummers but I think that
this kind of records sometimes lack of something more
recognizable for the audience in such a way that the
improvs become somewhat "amusing".
Sometimes Derek Bailey appears to have a very
particular approach to improvisation -that I don't
doubt. But I also feel that he has been developing
whithin his techniques too narrowly. The only thing
that I might find slightly different is whether he
plays acoustic or electric guitar. I prefer the
latter.
I read in a Frech Jazz book that Bailey's
contributions to improvisation were sometimes
"ridiculous" and I certainly believe that this is
right in some aspects. However, if you have a good
sense of humor -like me- you'll be able to appreciate
his work and enjoy it very much. I'm considered to
have a good sense of humor and therefore, I usually
look forward to the next Bailey release. But in a
group context, please...
Greetings,
EfrΘn del Valle
P.D: By the way, I don't share that opinion that
critics are frustrated musicians, not all of them at
least. Do you need to play an instrument to talk about
or love music?
