(with some very quick zornish changeups): the
recent record by the dilinger escape plan,
"calculating infinity." very highly
recommended. pure energy. quite creative.
like napalm death on acid.
they pound out compact phrases, changing the
beat every few bars with surprisingly fluidity.
super tight band. the lyrics fall a bit short,
but that's not really the point. they're shoved
in your face at such an insane raging pace that
you wouldn't realistically be getting them all
anyway. i find this disc particularly good when
i've just woken up and need to get outta bed.
adrenaline that can't be refused.
if you're interested in a progressive, tight,
pure energy kind of sound, i'd say this is
required listening. i noticed this disc was on
someone's top-ten list (though it's a 1999
release).

I highly recommend a bad called Gasp and their album "dome triller
of puzzle zoo people". I think it's their only offering.
Pretty amazing mix between grindcore (or some variant of metal.
sorry that I'm not up on my sub sets of metal), electronics, drone rock
and experimentation. Mind you it's not always in one song.
This little ditty flows quite nicely and has become one of my favorite
work CDs.
I'd also recommend Obituary - Cause of Death. Pretty amazing
musically.
Subject: Re: metal
On the subject of progressive metal (which reminds me of recent debates in
The Wire's letter column):
The *real* progressive metal has not come out of the death metal camp in
recent years, but rather has been the result of a couple of Norwegian
black metal bands integrating different styles and approaches into their
music, going as far as to move away from metal completely, in the case
of Ulver's "Metamorphosis" EP.
I'd heartily recommend:
Ulver "Bergtatt"
While still a more or less traditional black metal album, this has
a strange focus on melody that lifts it high above the average black
metal album.
Ulver "Themes from William Blake's 'Heaven and Hell'"
The most "progressive" album to have been released by a rock band
in recent years, with its full integration of ambient, electronica,
and spoken word influences. This album will appeal a lot less to
true metal fans than it will to fans of avant-garde weirdness.
The perfect accompaniment to "T.A.Z.", in a way...
Arcturus "La Masquerade Infernale"
A prog-metal album that succeeds in conveying an almost Sadean sense
of excess. Famous for "The Chaos Path", the closest any band has ever
come to writing the perfect Mr.Bungle song. The best song, however,
is "Alone", which sets Edgar A. Poe's poem of the same name to stunning
music. This album will appeal in no small way to fans of Faith No More
and Mr.Bungle.
Ved Buens Ende "Written in Waters"
The "Spiderland" (Slint) of black metal. A very emotional, truly weird
and esoteric album.
Enslaved "Mardraum"
Easily the best black metal album of 2000. Strangely, there is room
for epic tracks, reaching the 10-minute line in one case, next to
tracks that are heavily influenced by punk rock. Great lyrics, too.
Of course, death metal hasn't gone all stale.
Morbid Angel "Formulas Fatal to the Flesh"
An album almost completely written by super-genius guitar player
Trey Azagthoth. It has been said in the pages of The Wire, and I'll
say it again: if the man didn't play heavy metal, he'd be hailed as
a hero by the avant-garde community. His solos are INCREDIBLE.
Try to find "Love of Lava", which is a collection of 40 of his solos.
But, really, "Formulas..." is one of the best albums of recent years
to have been released in any genre. From the opening salvo of "Heaving
Earth" to the speed-barrage of "Chambers of Dis" to the epic "Covenant
of Death" to a track that could've easily fitted on Dead Can Dance's
"Aion"...
You should also check out "Gateways to Annihilation", last year's
addition to the Morbid Angel canon. While in itself being a superb
album (just listen to the opening track), I feel it does not reach
the heights of Trey's personal statement "Formulas...".
Nile "Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka"
A very worthy effort by these new masters of death metal. Personally,
I still think Morbid Angel can't be touched, but at least Nile has
shown that they are heirs to the throne. I like this album better than
their latest offering "Black Seeds of Vengeance", which concentrates
too much on speed for my taste. Clocking in at a mere 33 minutes,
this album is the perfect flip side to your occasional return to
"Torture Garden". It contains selected moments of stunning brutality.
Even though I consider all of the above albums essential, I think there is
one metal album that blows them all out of the water:
Meshuggah "Chaosphere"
The epitome of metal. The pinnacle of polyrhythmic weirdness, the
absolute highpoint of heaviness. Laced with solo guitar inspired
by Allan Holdsworth, the complexity of this album, most of which
you will not even notice until after repeating listening, beggars belief.
I must've listened to this a hundred times, and I still only "get"
selected fragments of songs. The rhythms are so complex as to be
in the category of Zappa's "Black Page" all over the album.
Curiously, most metal fans do not seem to be able to really appreciate
this album. Most metal fans say that it is dull and monotonic. On
the surface, that may even be true, because this album is at the same
level of intensity and dynamics throughout - there isn't a moment of
release, it's all just plodding riffs and rhythms that are seemingly
variations of 4/4. However, closer listening reveals that there are
mostly 2, 3, or 4 rhythms going on at the same time, with only one of
them keeping a straight 4/4, while for example the guitars are in 5/4
and the drums are in 6/4 *at the same time*. I don't know much about
music theory, but I do know that this album is a veritable catalogue
of rhythmic weirdness.

Does anybody have this box set? I'm curious about whether the discs have
the master takes grouped together with the alternates separate at the end
or if the master is immediately followed by all the alternates.
The track-by-track listings at amazon.com and cdnow.com indicate that they're in
session order (all the alternatives mixed in with the masters).

I am someone who flirts and flirts with Metal, but never truly commits to a tryst in
the back seat at lover's lane, so you can take me for what I am. That said, I've
been exploring some stuff that works for me, and most of it is either "famous" i.e.
Mayhem's "Dom Mysteris de Sathanis" (spelling, I know); or "funny" or "weird" i.e.
Burzum's Wagnerian Depeche Mode Music or Gorgoroth's "How to Philosophize with a
Hammer". My sources for finding the funny and weird without wading through tons of
"heavy" records, and they do it with funny and weird descriptions are Aquarius
records in SF and WFMU. Sort of Metal for people who don't want to actually read
"Metal Hammer"
anyway...
And I ask: I need to buy 10 'import cd single" cases and several 4disc doubles (like
coltrane's "Live in Japan" came in). Any suggestions for mail order jewel cases...?

First come the masters from each session, then the alternatives. Which is OK
I guess when you're dealing with 18 takes of "Marmaduke," but I actually
found I mostly preferred it the old way, especially when it comes to
something like the Koko session...
Be forewarned, though. One of the disks in the set (4, I think), was
remastered at the wrong speed 'cause Keepnews tried to cram too many tracks
on the disk, and there's been misleading and out-of-date info floating around
as to how to replace the disk. Also not clear whether the sets going into
the stores now have the replacement disk. (Not yet at J&R.) You should ask
before buying.
Otherwise... it's fabulous stuff, of course.

Needless to say, I was amazed that Iggy Pop was Painkiller! Anybody could

added the music as background?
Thanks,

Might I recommend the label/mailorder outfit Laser's Edge, located at

The owner is heavily into the prog/sympho/techno metal realm (as well as the
prog/sympho rock scene), and carries domestic and import CDs that no one else
does. DEFINITELY check out Spiral Architect on his own Sensory label.
You'll go nuts trying to keep up with their time sigs- a friggin' amazing

Would somebody care to give a few comments on Zorn's disc "Trembling Before
God"? I'm a big fan of the piano/clarinet duos on the "Bar Kokhbah" CD and
would definately buy this if it's fairly "similiar".
But perhaps this is more experimental in nature than "Bar Kokhbah". I see
Zorn is on vocals, what could that mean? Does this mean avant garde spasms
with screaming?
Thanks.

Arthur
I think Trembling Before God is an excellent disc. It is very much in the
vein of Bar Kokhba, moody and atmospheric but perhaps not quite as dark. The
Clarinet and Organ are a terrific combination and it's not, as I had feared,
limited in their range of sounds. Zorn's vocals are limited to one short
track which is a kind of yiddish cartoon number. It's fine while it lasts
but doesn't upset the rest of the disc. I'd say you needn't worry about
purchasing it.

Zorn's vocal track (only one) is a slapstick type of
thing. The rest of the disc is what you are looking
for--moody, introspective, tonal, melodic, nothing
avant at all. I like it but not neccesarily in one
sitting. It gets a bit static for my taste, but it is
beautiful. But for Filmworks/Masada-related stuff, I
prefer the augmented (w/ Ribot and the pipa player)
Masada trio from vol.8, which is extraordinary.
Trembling before God is very nice, but doesn't move me
as much.
