  364. Well I don't know exactly Arthur, not having heard all those other 
  365. soundtracks yet.  I'm holding the liner notes now but they're all in 
  366. Japanese, which I don't read.  It was recorded in July 1999 for this 
  367. particular film.  Most of the tracks were composed by Otomo.  A few were 
  368. also composed by Nakayama Skinpei and Victor Jara.

  370. The lineup is Otomo's New Jazz Quintet:
  371. Kikuchi Naruyoshi, tenor
  372. Tsugami Kenta, alto
  373. Otomo, guitar, turntables and electronics
  374. Mizutani Kiroaki, contra-bass
  375. Yoshigaki Yasuhiro, drums, pocket trumpet
  376. Nasuno Mitsuru, electric bass
  377. Masuko Tatsuki, electronics and piano
  378. Sachiko M, sampler
  379.  
  380. That's more than five obviously but some were only featured on the 
  381. soundtrack itself. The CD is on Eyewill out of Japan.  Some of these artists 
  382. were on the last Ground Zero concert.  You jazz-heads should pay attention 
  383. to Kikuchi Naruyoshi.  This guy can really blow.

  429. Chadbourne: All of the Shockabilly material is great, although his guitar work 
  430. doesn't shine (in a tormented way) as much as in his material on "Country 
  431. Protest", "Kill Eugene", & the Camper Van Beethoven stuff. I saw him with Jim 
  432. at the 7th Street Entry a few years back, and up until that point in time I 
  433. had only heard his albums. He's spent some time playing with Zorn and Kramer & 
  434. crew at Shimmy Disc early on. I don't know how much they collaborate these 
  435. days.

  598. Yeah, this one was the outlier in my group. It's kind of a mix between Bjork
  599. and Pram... and before you start rolling your eyes, at least let me try to
  600. describe it a bit more. When I bought it at Mondo Kims a few months ago, the
  601. clerk asked me if I knew anything about the group because he'd been playing
  602. the disc all day and it was amazing blah blah blah. So the outlook was not
  603. promising. But Karaoke Kalk generally serves up decent stuff, and this
  604. turned out to be one of their best. The basic formula is cute/seductive
  605. female vocalist chirps away over cottage-industry sounding IDM. The
  606. electronica never sounds forced, and the production isn't overdone.
  607. Honestly, I could do without some of the lyrics ("I'm walking alone..." etc
  608. etc, "snow is only frozen water..." very clever, "...in the shadow of your
  609. love" blah) but even these are more tolerable than some of the other pop
  610. lyrics I've heard as of late. Also, there's a good balance between catchy
  611. tracks and more difficult tunes (relatively speaking). The sleeper hit of
  612. the year, and I highly recommended it.

  614. I had a lot of trouble ordering my list actually. I mean, does Sachiko M's
  615. little 3" really have more worth (for me) than JAZZACTUEL or Yoshihide's
  616. "Memory Disorder"? (Hmm, Kierkegaard must deal with this age-old question
  617. somewhere). I guess it's high up on my list because I like the crispness of
  618. the recording and I listened to it a helluva lot. But it still seems like an
  619. unfair comparison to me. Two different leagues. So I guess it was really a
  620. process of giveandtake.

  630. Well, among other things, I like it because some of the tracks rock out
  631. without having that annoying rock quality of Konk Pack. I love MIMEO as well
  632. and this seemed to be MIMEO without some of the long stretches of boredom.
  633. Maybe give it a few more listens and it'll grow on you? I hope so, it's an
  634. interesting record.
