  52. middle eastern style combination' is too simplistic. If you add Stravinsky
  53. to the mix, it'd be ok, but the phrase would not sound that evident any more

  113. Robert Reigle is an ethnomusicologist, having spent many years 
  114. documenting the ethnic music of many of the nearly-thousand 
  115. different-language speaking groups in Papua New Guinea.  
  116. He's published much on the music of PNG including field recordings 
  117. included on CDs in academic ethnomusicological journals.  
  118. We'll be putting out several discs of field recordings shortly.
  119.  
  120. As an improvising saxophonist, his first disc was his group 
  121. Surrealestate, with handdrawn covers, and he had the 
  122. distinction of having the first label listed in the wonderful 
  123. old New Music Distribution Service catalog: Aardwoof Records.  
  124. The three Aardwoof LPs are in short supply but available 
  125. directly from Reigle himself at rreigle@ucla.edu.  
  126. His second LP was a solo saxophone disc, and the third was 
  127. "The Marriage of Heaven and Earth," one side reissued on the 
  128. CD of the same title on Acoustic Levitation AL-1002.  
  129. One side featured the lamented Steve McCall on drums.  
  130. The neat thing about the CD, despite my love of vinyl, 
  131. is that on CD the remastered title track is finally able 
  132. to function as composed, without LP channel bleedthrough: 
  133. two discreet channels, to be played separately or simultaneously. 
  134.  One channel has a slowly building crescendo of extreme saxes; 
  135. the other a tenor sax improv to the other channel. 
  136.  
  137. Reigle travelled to Italy to spend some time staying 
  138. with composer Giacinto Scelsi, this before Scelsi's current fame, 
  139. with only one disc available.  Reigle's premiered, transcribed, 
  140. and/or recorded Scelsi compositions some on his new disc.
  141.  
  142. A track from the newest incarnation of Surrealestate, 
  143. with its own new disc, is available in the CD included in 
  144. the latest issue of Bananafish magazine.

  161. Someone once suggested that there are two kinds of approaches to art: One is 
  162. to constantly reinvent context, the other to find a groove and work it like a 
  163. coalmine.  I don't think one is better than the other.  I think also, 
  164. especially in Zorn's case, the challenge of keeping a regular band fresh and 
  165. grooving is challenge enough.

  236. I have been listening to xu feng non-stop since I got it last week. I
  237. think this album finally captures what his game pieces are all about,
  238. and it is heavy. That is the first thing that attracted me to zorn was
  239. that he wasnt out there full of fluff, he spoke through a heavy genre
  240. skipping style that really drew me in. Xu Feng has knocked me for a
  241. loop on so many different levels. Yesterday I as marveling at the album
  242. design, I decided to see what was underneath the cd tray, what do you
  243. know, a little description of structure of the game piece. Of course, I
  244. had to listen to it again while looking at the secret inlay.

Eddie Prevost has the name of the label wrong on his site.  The label is Arrival Records, a new label started by Ron de Jong, the percussionist from Vertrek Ensemble (whose new album with Eugene Chadbourne is very good, by the way -- one of my favorite Chadbourne releases).  The EuroFreeImprov site has the right label in the Bailey discography section.

  278. I'm not sure when the album will be out; there will be another release coming at the same time by a band from Montreal, and while the Bailey/Prevost material (disc, cover) is ready to go to the manufacturer, the other one isn't.  It should, hopefully, be very soon.

  280. I've heard the album (I wrote the liner notes for it), and it is extremely good. But then again, how could you expect less from Bailey and Prevost?  It is quite quiet and introspective -- more than I was initially expecting.

  331. I've found an interesting way around it.  Mainly it's involved 
  332. playing it at a low volume (non-Absinthe Naked City) so that it's not 
  333. overpowering.  After gradual exposure, the people who are open to it 
  334. will ask about it.  This worked with a number of people in one of my 
  335. former jobs--people were overworked, exhausted, and somewhat bitter. 
  336. I got into a loop of playing _Radio_, _Torture Garden_, and 
  337. Painkiller over and over.  After a week or two of this, some people 
  338. started asking about Eye--what CD was that, could I play that one 
  339. again a little louder so they could hear it, could I make this or 
  340. that scream into a beep sound for them?  (I did.)
  341.  
  342. Granted, this wouldn't necessarily work in many places--this 
  343. workplace in question was quite loud--but it's worth a shot.  It 
  344. might help if the people you're trying to expose have some negative 
  345. energy to work out, are going through tough times, or have a 
  346. developed sense of the absurd.  I wouldn't play it for my in-laws, 
  347. for example, but I have played it for friends and nieces and nephews. 
  348. I got varying reactions, some surprisingly positive.  The 
  349. quick-change and screaming tunes seemed to get the best response, for 
  350. some reason...  And while my wife probably wouldn't reach for the 
  351. Naked City CDs right off the bat, she does have a real fondness for 
  352. "American Psycho" and a number of other Eye tunes.

  478. 10:30 pm  - the next generation of Afro-beat in the spirit of the "Black
  479. President," Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.  This fifteen piece band hits hard with the
  480. left and right -- monstrous horns and bass layered over funky polyrhythmic
  481. beats and breaks coupled with furious lyrics challenging and attacking the
  482. dehumanizing capitalist system and inciting insurrection in English, Yoruba
  483. and Spanish.  Along with their weekly show at No Moore in Tribeca, the band
  484. has recently performed at Celebrate Brooklyn!, BAMcafe and the DUMBO Arts

  488. 9:00 pm  - originally an all female band, FBI gradually morphed into its
  489. current mixed-gender status.  The group features Sasha Sumner dropping funky
  490. rap over hip hop beats with cool melodic vocal and sax lines. Her quirky
  491. lyrics are straight from the heart of fem-funk-ville and her sax breaths
  492. space into deep grooves.  FBI also features Jennifer Turner on guitar, Mike
  493. Levy on bass, Peter Basil on percussion and Inx Herman on Drums.

  495. BACKGROUND:
  496. The Brecht Forum is a place for people who are working for fundamental
  497. social change and a new culture that puts human needs first.  Offerings
  498. range from classes, forums and panel discussions to concerts, art exhibits,
  499. poetry readings and theatrical events.  Volunteers at the Brecht Forum have
  500. developed the loft into a thriving venue for both emerging and established
  501. artists.  
  502. The Neues Kabarett music series has presented monthly concerts
  503. with such artists as William Parker, Marc Ribot, Eugene Chadbourne, Joe
  504. McPhee, Joe Maneri, Tim Berne, Christine Bard, Tom Abbs, Mat Maneri, Susie
  505. Ibarra, Roy Campbell and others since it was launched in October 1998.
  506. Volunteers have worked to build the physical space to support arts
  507. programming by raising funds for a new sound system, piano, lighting and
  508. other needs.  The Antibalas/FBI concert will benefit the continuation of
  509. these projects.

  578. Masada performed a set of "last live shows" at the Knit - Zorn announced this
  579. from the stage, after throwing a jacket over the club's webcam so the shows
  580. would be "just for us," exclusively for those present (this was shortly after
  581. Zorn had been made aware that the cameras were webcasting 24-7, including
  582. soundchecks and private conversations.)  But some months later, according to
  583. Dave Douglas (who told me this firsthand - no hearsay involved), Zorn started
  584. accepting engagements for the quartet again "because it was so much fun."
  585.  
  586. In other words, Masada continues mainly because Zorn enjoys it.
