The 'spharaphon' (sometimes referred to as 'sphaeraphon' or 'sph=E4raphon',=
=20
or even ''klaviatursph=E4raphon') appears to be one of the instruments=20
developed around the 30s by J=F6rg Mager.
He proceded from original electronic instruments the 'electrophon' and the=
=20
'kurbelsph=E4raphon'. These are basically tone generators controlled in more=
=20
and more complex ways: by a handle that the player moves over a dial for=20
the electrophon; foot pedals were added to the kurbelsph=E4raphon; the=20
spharaphon was controlled by two monophonic keyboards instead of a handle.=
=20
Later Mager also invented the 'partiturophon' and the 'kaleidophon', based=
=20
on his previous inventions (the partiturophon had five keyboards, etc).
These instruments were obviously motivated by microtonal music, but were=20
mainly used in theatrical productions in Germany at the time. Perhaps with=
=20
friendlier and more exportable names, or if the political situation of=20
Germany had been different at the time, these instruments would have=20
survived the second war.
Pease check out obsolete.com for sources and the full story on these=20
instruments.

To throw another one into the ring: Epstien is also smashingly good on
bassist Todd Sickafoose's recent "Dogs Outside". Not to slight the rest
of the fine group, either: Alan Ferber on trombone, Justin Morrell on

playing from all; this one went straight to my "best of the year"

One musician who uses the Trautonium is Pete Namlook, for example
on his recent release with Move D (David Moufang), THE AUDIOLOUNGE.
He often credits Oskar Sala in his 'thank you' section. Check his
homepage at www.hyperreal.com/fax, he often mentions the Trautonium
in his album descriptions.
Kind regards,

Subject: Varese Burroughs & Beyond...
The Chailly Varese set on Decca is worthwhile, mainly
because it collects all the works together, however better
performances of Varese's works exist elsewhere, the Boulez
as previously mentioned, and others which unfortunately
still only exist on vinyl: 'The Varese Album' 2LP set from
Columbia, with Robert Craft conducting the Columbia
Symphony Orchestra, contains Ionisation, Density 21.5,
Integrales, Octandre, Hyperprism, Poeme Electronique,
Deserts, Offrandes, Arcana. My favourite version of
Deserts is on an Angel LP, performed by the Paris
Instrumental Ensemble for Contemporary Music with
Konstantin Simonovitch conducting, and Ameriques performed
by the Utah Symphony with Maurice Abravanel(?) conducting
on the Vanguard Classics imprint (which is available on
CD). Dolphy performed Density 21.5 under the guidance of
the maestro himself; Charlie Parker was friends with
Varese and a collaboration was discussed. As for reading
Burroughs cut-ups, I once found it impossible as well,
until I stopped trying to make any logical sense of it and
started reading it 'out loud' to myself, just following
the flow...a most enjoyable experience, akin to a good
improvised solo. It allows you to 'free associate' all
kinds of imagery and ideas, instead of pondering the
artist's 'meaning'. As for the Trautorium, it is certainly
a fascinating instrument, but the CD by Oskar Salas hardly
does justice to it...

Having just watched the DVD twice in the past few weeks thinking that I
might have missed something: this is a great movie? Is there something
I'm not getting? Did you have to have been there at the time? I love
films that many others find obscure and freaky, but this one pegged the
"guess I haven't done the right drugs" meter for me...

Yeah, well, I've got a friend that is more or less marginally involved with MEC
(which as big as they are, is not that hard to imagine) and I, too was curious
what this quite-perceptive zorn group thinks/thought of the Micro East
Collective. The press was a generalized "improv" piece...explaining (sortof)
the music and the draw and had a listing for some clubs that included
Chadbourne, Han Bennink, and smaller groups. I think the newspaper clippings
come from a local arts paper...maybe the Independent Weekly?

"Day Of The Robot" is very techno-based with one or two heavier guitar
tracks. Not an absolutely essential Buckethead album though. Probably the
best album I've heard with Buckethead is "Transmutation" by Praxis.

In the notes of the album it is written that ornette's music was finally
not used in the film. I second the recommendation for the album. The sound
of Coleman's band + strings is IMHO quite to reeds + sampler sound on

Hello,
Any comments on "Xu Feng"? It should be out now, right?
Could anybody give me the exact line-up? Also, I'm curious how well it
sounds. Technically I mean. I didn't like the "live" sound on the Cobra
discs. I suppose this would be recorded in a similar way.

_Day of the Robot_ is terrific. "Heaviest" is a moot point, but it can also
be un-electric, right? So I=B4d recommend _Octave of the Holy Innocents_ a
brilliant album of acoustic jamming between Buckethead and Jonas Hellborg
and Michael Shrieve on Hellborg=B4s Day Eight label.
And an Avant release pairing Buckethead and Brain (going under the
collective name Pieces), _I Need 5 Minutes Alone_, includes some righteous
guitar-shredding for the faithful, along with a lot of other different
kinds of stuff. I just wrote a review of that which should be turning up on
the Motion website <www.state51.co.uk/motion> any time now. All the best,
