A couple of months ago the Wire raved about a new Table of Elements
release, Inside the Dream Syndicate Volume 1, with Cale, Conrad, MacLise,
Young and Zazeela.  After a delay it's finally starting to show up in
stores, but the Anomalous Records web site is quite disparaging of the
release, saying that it appears to be Conrad's view of the Dream Syndicate,
that MacLise is inaudible, that it's only 31 minutes long and 'not
representative of the period whatsoever'.  Anyone else heard this and care
to register an opinion?

    it's funny because i was just reading myself to post something on
it, relating to Kristallnacht. besides the obvious political statements in
the record that go far beyhond the Holocoust and the actual palestinian
problem in Israel. connections to Zorn are the "Juden" factor,
experimental sound and political statement. the record cross several kinds
of music, from industrial samples to more tradictional music (theres a
sequence where she sings about the "vacacion camp" of Birkanau where you
can listen a sample of Marlene Dietrich singing). the songs that go on the
record were also recorded in several languages mixing from english,
hebrew, ydish, arabe, italian, german... i do recomend it.

Which I heartily agree with. Caine has relieved the music of its bombast
(and the unpleasant associations that Wagner=B4s music can have for many) an=
d
brought forth the exquisite music at the core - it=B4s like sitting in a
well-appointed, fin-de-si=E8cle watering hole and being entertained by the
world=B4s best cafe orchestra.

As far as Mahler goes, there has probably been enough said: A brilliant
studio achievement, an interesting investigation of Mahler=B4s stylistic
mongrelism as well as his "submerged" Jewish roots (brilliant use of the
cantor Aaron Bensoussan, who also does yeoman work on the Caine project
Zohar); and then a double live CD set of a selection of the arrangements
which may even by superior to the studio recording.

The Schumann project, however, left me cold. It hops back and forth between
Caine=B4s arrangements (often featuring poets) and those of a well-known
chamber ensemble. No real integration. Perhaps not the same sort of
challenge posed by Schumann that the _Goldberg Variations_ (especially in
their Glenn Gould rendition) seems to have roused in Caine.

On the basis of the two ToEs released, it's hard to sense the scope of
Smith's work. As a Fluxus-flecked multimedia artist, his work doubtless was
best experienced firsthand, but failing that the Zorn show should surely be
the Tonic for Montez-minimizers. Though Zorn does something different from
Smith's precedents, the two are definitely linked through their humour,
their playful exhumation of contemporary cultural trash, and their
intermittent ability to translate the latter into something sublime (among
other qualities). There will never be another Jack Smith, but I can't think
of a better curator for his legacy than John Zorn.

Like so many other Downtown events, I wish I could attend. This stuff (Zorn
and Smith's) is so contemporary, it could surely have resonance beyond the
few few culture moles stuck deep in their boroughs who know about it. But,
of course, the mass taste-manipulators could never risk the widespread
dissemination of such pure information, such dangerously uncooptable
thought.

Did Smith have any connections to Fluxus other than possible friendships with some Flux-ers?  I would have thought his aesthetics vastly different from Fluxus but then I also have only seen some films and read one or two of his writings.

"Inside the Dream Syndicate Volume I:  Day of Niagara (1965)" CD


Table of the Elements would be happy to work with La Monte Young and Marian
Zazeela in realizing pending Dream Music recordings but for the inescapable
fact that Mr. Young now demands that he be accorded sole composer status in
the recordings. Since this demand is completely at odds with the
facts---that these recordings were the product of pure collaboration, were
intended as such by all involved at the time of creation and, in fact, are
a joint work as cognizable under copyright law---and since meeting such a
demand could act to waive certain legal rights which are rightfully those
of each co-author in the joint work, John Cale and Tony Conrad (the only
other surviving members of the Dream Music collective) have never acceded
and will not now accede to such a demand. In the event that Mr. Young
ceases such demands and embraces the plain reality of co-authorship, TOTE,
Mr. Cale and Mr. Conrad will be more than happy to include Mr. Young and
Ms. Zazeela in the process of realizing these important recordings. Until
such time, Mr. Cale and Mr. Conrad are well within their legal rights as
co-authors of a joint work to authorize TOTE to release these recordings
without Mr. Young's stamp of approval, so long as Mr. Young (and Ms.
Zazeela) is (are) paid a pro-rata share of the profits derived from such
release.

yeah, I've only heard it once, but I'd say it's of historical interest only.
the sound quality is very bad, and the music's not especially exciting. the
previously unreleased Young piece on the recent Ohm box is much more
interesting, I think (although I'm not especially a fan of the box in
general.)

Joe posted Table Of The Elements' response to Lamonte Young's PR regarding
this CD, but if you didn't see LY's initial PR, it's at
http://lamonteyoung.com/statemen.htm. I tried to post it here yesterday
before I knew it was on the web, but I think it got swallowed into the
too-long-post abyss.

Curiously, I posted it here at the same time as I posted the TOTE
response, but only the TOTE post made it to the list. But now we have
pointers to each.

Even if the sound sucks, I'd be interested in hearing it. Unfortunately,
with both sides sticking to their stories as to the composition/
improvisation of the pieces, it may take major diplomacy to get them
to agree on anything. (Hey, maybe if Bill Clinton invites them to Camp
David, then locks them in a room with him playing saxophone until they
scream Uncle... :-])

Don't know what the Zorn content is, but to respond: The EMI CD is
French EMI and I believe was not available in the States. I got my
copy in March 1994. Somewhat later it was rumored in
rec.music.bluenote that the Bluenote label was planning to release
both albums, but this fell through (Chuck Nessa, who released the
albums on his label in the States, may have said something about it at
the time, but I don't remember).

Further to the discussion that has been occurring about Zorn's game pieces,
I've been wondering if there is any way to 'get' the actual compositions
themselves. I understand the concept, I think, but would greatly like to
perform some of them for myself, but as a musician (among other things) living
in England, my chances of actually participating in on directed by Zorn are
slight. Reuben Radding mentioned performing in Cobras not directed by Zorn, so
he obiviously lets some people in on the rules. Can Cobra (and or Lacrosse, Pool
etc.) be bought the same way one would buy, say Bartok scores? Or does Zorn
himself have to give you a copy?
Thanks in advance for any help - I think, following his three recent performances
in London, it would be great to somehow get Zorn's music more exposure on this
side of the pond; maybe performing some game pieces would be a good way to do
this!

Hey did anyone catch this performance last night, who would care to comment.
I'm not really familiar with Chadbourne's work.  I've heard that he does some
C&W stuff and has worked extensively with Zorn in the past.  He's recorded so
much, that I was wondering if there are any specific recordings that come
highly recommended.  Thanks.

i count four montreal tapes in my collection so far. i love the session
with gonzalo rubalcaba, beautiful. paul motian on drums. lyrical,
swinging and deep. my second favorite is the session with don cherry
and ed blackwell. some of cherry's better playing in the later years.
the orchestra is always good to here, but this session is not
particularly new or revelatory. the geri allen session is good, but not
as memorable as the rubalcaba and cherry session. what i really want to
see released is the egberto gismonti session.... in terms of haden's
recordings, i enjoy the rubalcaba and cherry sessions as much as
anything he's done in recent years. outside of the orchestra
recordings, my all-time favorite hadens are probably the two albums of
duets with various others and the duet with Hampton Hawes....

Oh, man.  _As Long as There's Music_ always lays me out flat.  A
while ago on the (band) Television list, we had a discussion of what
music you'd listen to if you only had an hour left to live, and that
was one of mine.  "Hello Goodbye" is such a moving track, and
wouldn't be such a bad one to go out on....  The one of the
spirituals with Hank Jones is great, but the one with Hawes is
something entirely else.

So how fast should I run to pick up _The Golden Section_?
