  38. I do make music. It has nothing to do with how I make ends meet. I have a 
  39. day job. Getting up in the morning after three to five hours of sleep is 
  40. killing me, but I will never whine and cry about it. I feel very fortunate 
  41. to get to play music all the time and will gladly sacrifice sleep. Plus, it 
  42. allows me to eat and have a nice place to live.

  73. floating around the first night of the beer and sausage festival in brooklyn
  74. last night. there for vicki bennett aka people like us, who's recently caught my
  75. attention. really fun set, manipulating old video clips (movies, instructional
  76. films) and suggesting foreboding, sexual, hilarious sequences by repeating
  77. scenes and motions, all with a moderately interesting, usually rhythmic
  78. soundtrack. she's back there tonight with matt walsh(?) of stock, hausen and
  79. walkman, but i won't be there, i'm afraid.

  81. i remember asking about plu here a few months ago, but now with new eyes i'll
  82. ask again: does she always use video? is it always solo? do she do music that
  83. stands on it's own (without visual or live setting)? i'd be interested to here
  84. more about her good and bad and reasons to love, if anyone wants to offer up.

  86. the last set of the night was quintron and miss pussycat, and it's the second
  87. time i've missed them. was curious about the puppet show, but couldn't suffer
  88. the idiotic charming songs long enough to get to that part. they seemd to be the
  89. draw of the night. any q+mp champions out there?

  91. also, i have an odd little cd, funny little organ/vocal songs called something
  92. like "songs about furniture" by a guy named john von ryan. anyone know him? i
  93. couldn't help fantasizing that there might be a quintron connection, but i'm
  94. probably wrong.

  116. well, since I'm one of those people, and since I think it's a pretty safe bet 
  117. that I put more money, time and energy into the Haunted House CD that I 
  118. released than go into most of Loren's projects, I feel fairly qualified to 
  119. comment here.

  121. while Loren would be the first to tell you that he was cranky during that 
  122. interview (conducted by our own Tom Pratt, by the way, although he's left our 
  123. list in the interim), I think he has every right to not be thrilled with his 
  124. relative lack of recognition over the years, considering he's one of the most 
  125. gifted musicians in the US. all he's essentially saying in that interview is 
  126. that he'd like the money that (he feels) comes with having a record on a 
  127. major label. it's actually a very good interview, check it out if you're 
  128. interested.

  130. and if she knew what was good for her (musically, anyway), Chan Marshall 
  131. would do a duo CD with Loren for her next record, and then maybe everyone 
  132. would be happy. their duo set was my personal highlight of last year's 
  133. Loren-fest at Tonic, along with some of the Haunted House sets.

  168. It was a pleasant surprise to see The Dismemberment Plan mentioned on this
  169. list.  I highly recommend them.  The music is fun and witty--not the typical
  170. DC post-punk sound you'd expect.  Check out the band live if you can.  Shows
  171. in their hometown are a treat; local fans often dress up in costume and
  172. participate on stage.

  303. i talked to him after a naked city show in zurich (6 may 1992), and said
  304. how disappointed i was that they were splitting up. he said "well, at
  305. least you've recorded this show and have it on tape." i then asked him
  306. if he was pissed off about that, but he said "no, as long as you don't
  307. make copies for anyone or sell it, but just use it for your own
  308. listening pleasure, it's fine." (needless to say: there still only is
  309. one copy around.) i offered make him a copy, but he said that it wasn't
  310. necessary since they had recorded it on dat.

  338. with copyright issues when their field of work or interest is concerned.

  341. concerned about their copyrights, who will for their friends mindlessly
  342. make illegal copies of application software they bought.)

  515. you could have asked me about why i disliked perowsky's playing so much,
  516. and not come to a totally ridiculous and wrong conclusion. i'm quite
  517. sure ben's chops are better than mine, but i don't envy him. i've
  518. studied with terry bozzio (of the black page fame); and that's where i
  519. learned not to envy another drummer whose chops are way beyond mine.
  520. (no, i'm not saying ben's are way beyond mine.) 
  521. it's nothing competitive. i'm not interested in any of the gigs perowsky
  522. is doing. (at least the ones i know about.)
  523. if it was about fearing competition: how could i have possibly ever
  524. written anything good about joey baron? i'd have to always make sure not
  525. to mention him anywhere, because that would be competition! i know i'll
  526. probably never get to where he is at as a drummer, still i love him for
  527. his playing, and couldn't care less about anything else. i know what my
  528. good sides as a drummer are, and that's all i personally need. there's
  529. thousands of more advanced drummers out there. do i care? yes, if i love
  530. their playing. yes, if i dislike their playing.

  584. P.S. Thanks to those on the list who recommended Arto Lindsay's PRIZE last 
  585. year; I finally got around to checking it out, and I'm about as excited as I 
  586. can be---for those who haven't heard it, it's an unstable amalgam of 
  587. Brasilian-tinged pop, noise, some pretty rough-edged electronic, and other 
  588. ideas.  Pretty amazing, IMHO---absolutely not to be missed, though I have no 
  589. way of knowing if this is typical for Arto.  If so, I need to buy some 
  590. records.

  592. P.P.S. The interview w/ Arto in the newest (?) issue of BOMB is excellent, 
  593. in spite of his occasional reticence.  Arto's on the cover, as well, in a 
  594. great photo.  Better snap it up, it's been out for a while.
