<<the next night, the first set was solo Drumm, and was superb. he didn't
bring his Mac, just a guitar and synth, but he's so unique and full of
ideas, one of the handful of electronic improvisers who can play a great
solo set. he's influenced by Ralf Wehowsky, and it's interesting to go back
and listen to Wehowsky's Streamline record, "when freezing air stings like
ice...", having heard so much Drumm in the interim.
the second set was with Lee Ranaldo, and was awesome. Lee was 100 times more
subtle than I'd ever heard him before (even Thurston Moore couldn't believe
how Lee played, and he's heard him once or twice before), and the two of
them just clicked. at the end, they trailed off to virtual silence, but Lee
wouldn't look up to end it, so everyone just sat there on the edge of their
seat for a couple of minutes, not quite sure if there was still sound coming
from the musicians or not. really great.>>
i must say, this was one of the best shows i'd seen in a long time. i'd
never seen drumm before, so i can't really comment on what kind of a night
it was fer him (although i thought it was fantastic), but i have seen
ranaldo many many times and this was definitely a set that sticks out for
me. he was even quieter and mroe subtle than when i saw him w/ loren
mazzacane. full of silences and unexpected bursts of noise, the set really
began to take on a life of its own as it went on, with lee even seeming to
lose control of the sounds he was making at some points. (hard to tell just
what drumm was doing, he was up there behind his synth and i couldn't see
shit, oh well). one of my favorite things about ranaldo is the way he's
always trying to coax some new sound out of a guitar, regardless of whether
or not he "knows" exactly what he's doing. his use of the kraklebox is quite
amazing. the two played off each other remarkably well. i hope they'll do it
again in the future.
the silence at the end was absolutely mind-blowing. drumm was obviously
finished, looking over at lee for some kind of mutual agreement, but lee
just stared at the floor, looking like he might start back up any second.
after what seemed like an eternity, lee looked up and smiled, applause, the
two left the stage.
for anyone in the western mass area, drumm will be performing a solo set at
flywheel in easthampton. flywheel is an incredible volunteer-run space that
has hosted the likes of gerry hemingway/john butcher and high rise among
others, including local acts, poetry readings, film screenings, etc.

i think the reference was to Contemporary release entitled:
Something Else!!! The music of Ornette Coleman. i'm close to sure that it
came out before The Shape of Jazz To Come.
it has a bunch of his staple tunes like:the blessing, jayne, chippie, the
sphinx, when will the blues leave?, etc.
the line-up is:
ornette coleman:alto
don cherry:trumpet
walter norris:piano
don payne:bass
billy higgins:drums

Interestingly, the two newest (I think) releases from Bailey may give a
newcomer a good place to start. The three CD ISKRA on Emanem is earlier
stuff, circa 1970-2. IMHO, it is Bailey at his finest, and among players
every bit as strong as he is. Paul Rutherford and Barry Guy were longtime
associates, even back then. So the rapport among the three is telepathic.
It is very free playing, but will hold you in it's grasp throughout.
Perhaps a bit pricey for a beginner, but not to be missed for any Bailey
fan. Comes from the same period as the classic ODE from London Jazz
Composers Orchestra, also featuring all three, Guy, Bailey, and Rutherford.
The second, Mirakle on Tzadik, actually surprised me. I had read some
negative feedback, but I think it's a solid effort, though quite unlike
almost any other DB recording. There's a beat! And DB does seem to be
responding to his bandmates with some enthusiastic playing. Every bit as
good as the Tony Williams Arcana and Ruins recordings. I think it would be
a good place to start for a new fan, quite accessible but not straying too
far from DB's freer efforts in this type setting. And to think, the guy is
70 years old!!!

Hmm. . . I had fairly different impressions overall of the Thurs. show. I
thought the set with Mori never really gelled. I didn't find her stuff
(mostly digital drum machine sounds, not arranged in any way that left much
of an impression) particularly interesting, and it didn't seem like Drumm
knew what to do with them. I got the impression that he was the one who cut
it short, based on her facial expressions and overhearing them talking after
the show. It seemed like she was commenting on it being short and implying
that she wouldn't have minded it being longer. Personally, I would have
liked to see them try to click some more, but I didn't need to hear more of
the same.

I actually thought this set worked well. Everyone seemed to be responding
better, and there were some nice dynamics. My one complaint was with
Surgal's drumming, which was nice, but a little too derivatively
"free-jazzy" for me. It kept threatening to put things in a jazz context as
opposed to a more exploratory vein. Though their playing was pretty nice
for what it was. Some great extreme high and low frequency stuff from
Kevin's synth. The latter had my clothes vibrating.

I very unfortunately missed the solo set, but let me concur with everyone
else that the set with Ranaldo was fantastic. I've see Lee play in
improvised/non-SY contexts several times, and I was never super-impressed,
but he was FAR more sensitive here, utilizing quiet and space well and doing
some really nice stuff with a violin bow. And of the course the held
silence at the end, which actually only finally ended when Drumm started
unplugging equipment. Lee then had to look up and chuckle.

Apologies if this has already been sent to the Zorn list...
Looks like BBC Radio 3 is doing a special on John Zorn
in July. The shows are on at 1PM EST and 12 Noon CST
and run 30 minutes every week on Saturdays for 4 weeks.
This month they are doing a Lee Konitz series, next month
a series on John Coltrane and _Ascension_.
There is no written detail on the Zorn series yet but there is
for Konitz and Coltrane and these shows include interviews
as well as music.
Listen in on Real Audio...

yes, i don't enjoy ornette with cherry et. al. the closest i've ever come
to enjoying coleman has been on the golden circle discs. however, i offer
the following caveat: i haven't listened to any ornette in at least 6
years (on account of not getting much out of it), and it is possible i
would like it now (particularly if the comparisons with masada are
anywhere near accurate).

I just got the new cd "Helium" by the Tin Hat Trio (Mark Orton on
guitar/dobro/banjo, Rob Burger on accordian/piano/organ/etc. and Carla
Kihlstedt on violin/viola) and it is pretty amazing. They have become a bit
more adventurous since the first cd, and there is a bit more writing from
RB and CK this time around. There is still a Piazzolla and Rota sound in
there, but now there is a bit more Tom Waits influence, a few bluesy
tracks, and also some stuff reminiscent of Bill Frisell's "Tales From The
Far Side" music. This is understandable since the instrumentation is pretty
much the same, and also Rob Burger played with Frisell on the soundtrack.
And speaking of Tom Waits, he sings on the last track which also features 7
other guests including Trevor Dunn...

Alright, I've got a suggestion.
Let's keep the dd related discussion on track.
Patrice said:
hold it, hold it! never did i compare the dave douglas sextet to dream
theater! i simply said that the dd thing was too wanky-wanky, show-offy
- - - and that if i wanted that, i would rather go an see dream theater.
there is a big difference there!!!
First off, It seems lately that the discussion lately has become an ego
match. If you need to defend how someone interpreted your comments to save
face, keep it to yourself. If someone misinterpreted what you said and it
makes a substantial impact on the direction of the discussion, then alright.
I'm not here to start the flames, but come on, I'm sick of the personal
tone these discussions are taking.
Fact: Patrice didn't like Ben's playing. OK. It's just as
constructive to hear dislikes as it is likes. I wasn't at the same concert,
but I have seen him live numerous times and my verdict: he's a young,
promising talent on the scene. At first It seemed that the attack on Ben's
playing went beyond just a simple thumbs down. Was it personal? I almost
wondered if Ben was hitting on your girlfriend? Then it became obvious when
he mentioned that he was also a drummer. It's a natural reaction of
competitive nature. Drummer vs. Drummer. I'll admit that Patrice's post did
bring up some great tangential discussions. But then these discussions were
being interupted by defensive displays of pride.(By the way if you say that
you might as well go to a dream theatre show, then there definitely is an
implicit comparison going on.)
Patrice has been a great contributor to this list, and I hope that he
continues. (although it'd be nice if you consolidated your posts and/or
edit)
And my opinions on dd: He's one of the hottest muthafuckers on the
scene. Yes, there are definitely different "grades" of excellence on his
albums, but that's human. And since this is the zornlist, I'll quote
Zorn's opinion on dd that I heard at a workshop last summer.
(Paraphrased) "I wasn't planning on having a trumpet in Masada, but what can
I say, Dave's the shit!"
Just a concerned zorn-lister,
Jeremy

Subject: new ribot & new frisell
Just some quick reviews of a couple more new cds I got today:
Marc Ribot's new Cubanos Postizos cd "Muy Divertido!" is great! While he
could have just recorded more stuff in the slow moody vibe of the first cd,
he did just the opposite, and this cd is full of upbeat energetic songs.
And Marc's punk/noise side occasionally comes out too, with bursts of
extreme distortion and wild chromatic runs...
And Bill Frisell's "Ghost Town" - There's some brilliant tunes on here,
like the variation on "Tales From The Far Side" (used as the main theme to
the second part of Gary Larson's cartoon). Everything is done very well,
but generally I think I prefer to hear Frisell in interactive mode, with
the Quartet or Trio, rather than using loops and overdubbing. Still, he's
come a long way in this format since the old days, like that duo disc with
Vernon Reid (shudder)...

rocking.

Haven't listened it yet, but a friend of mine told me it was a kind
of intimate / "slow" album that deserved many listenings to get in. Thanks
for you review, Julian.
Speaking of guitarrists I just got John Scofield's "Bump" on Verve
and it really grooves and funk indeed; IMHO it's far away from his last "A
go-go".
Looks like as if Big John is on the run again.
Cheers!
