Hi Bob (and Zornlisters)!
Is the lineup the same as the first cd?
By the way, speaking of guitar players I'd like to recommend
French/Vietnamese Nguyen Le's "Tales from Vietnam" and "3 trios";both were
released on ACT and IMHO are great recordings worth listening to.
Go on listening!

Partch's Genesis of a Music leaves few stones unturned. He explains his
tuning system, how to repair his instruments (I enjoy the entry about
what to do when one of the liquor bottles breaks on the Xmyl Xyl (or
whatever it's called)), instructions on how to play the instruments
(when playing the bass marimba, he asks the player to approach the
instrument with the fury of Ben Hur in his chariot or some such).... He
does get into considerable minutae, but there is much humor and
intellectual energy. ... I've heard good things about the Partch bio
that came out a year or so ago, but haven't gotten around to tracking
it down myself....

Subject: recent goodies
Hello everybody,
Just a short review of recent goodies
- -Percy Howard: incidental seductions (Materiali Sonori)
Percy Howard (former leadsinger of Nus), well you like him or not. He has=
a
very unique soulful voice, and has a very special manner of
prounouncing/singing. After his adventurous Meridiem releases (backed by
Massacre!!!), we found him here back with a melodic album. The core band =
is
Vernon Reid, Charles Hayward and Steve Sullivan. Unfortunately THE best
track is with guest Ernaldo Bernocchi who puts some synths and beats in t=
he
first track. The other tracks: melodic laidback music, very mainstream=85=
..
any, just listen to any Nus album but a little more rock oriented.
- -Aube and Zbigniew Karkowski: Mutation (Ers)
This release sees Aube paired with (for me) an unknown sound artist. The
sound source are said to be stones. Unfortunately, I don=92t recognize th=
e
original elements. However this album is great: the tone can be compared =
a
sinus wave but with a bigger frequency and more =93power=94. No harsh no=
ise but
high frequency tones with controlled feedback. If you like Sachiko M solo
album, buy this one. If you don=92t, stay off.
- -Brian Ladd: Unsubmitted themes for hellraiser (Auf Abwegen)
Vince of Manifold records suggested me this album, and I don=92t regret i=
t.
The first plunderphonic soundtrack album? Who know, it might be indeed. L=
add
just had a sampler and a effect box, took excerpts and mixed them in real
time. What you hear? An album with a lot of sphere: from dark ambient to
subtle techno beats to horror ambient. Listen to this with headphones and
enjoy this one. I remember that when I listened to this album, I also
imagined my own horror movies based on the images of hellraiser i had in =
my
own mind=85. Great album.
- -Thurston Moore: Lost to the city, noise to nowhere (Intakt)
I admit it, I don=92t like Sonic Youth at all: too arty for me, when I
listened to the =9320th century=94 album, it sounded like a bad rehearsel=
album
to me. But when I listen to Thurston Moore, I really admire this musical
genius. As usual, he is backed by William Winant and Tom Surgal. But unli=
ke
their other release on Victo, this one is really perfect. No harsh noise,
but both tracks start with subtle percussion and low guitar rumblings and=
it
develops very slowly until you are surrounded by their wall of sound=85.
Without even noticing. Great music. But what is this music? Free jazz, fr=
ee
rock??? You can definitely hear that everyone was in great condition and
were really taking time to develop this music.
- -Loren Mazzacane Connors and Jim O=92rourke: In Bern (HatNoir)
I admit, I really dig Mazzacane, but unfortunately, most albums lack
production. This one however has a superb sound, and a very warm feeling,
wich is necessary to really grow into his music. And add Jim O=92rourke, =
who
(fortunately) follows the typical style of Mazzacane. I don=92t know if t=
his
album is improvised or not, but all the tracks have a warm blues-y sound.
Small melodic lines, controlled feedback, and great soloing on top of tha=
t.
As I said, if you like O=92rourkes typical guitar lines, you might be
disapointed, because you hear that he is a great fan of Mazzacane. If you
however want a great introduction to Mazzacane, go for this one.
Best wishes,
Stefan Verstraeten

I haven't read the other books, but I can't imagine anything you'd want to
know about Partch that wasn't in Genesis of a Music. Partch is a great
writer as well as musical visionary, and the autobiographical sections are
fantastic. I can think of very few other composers who left such a thorough
account of their music.

Yes, the original five lps are reproduced on the three CDs in the box. The
notes include a repro. of the original posters announcing the series, so
it's finally possible for those of us with a discographical addiction to
date who played when accurately.
>Is it as good as the lineup makes it look?
One of the best buys of the year to date. It took me a few years to run the
last vinyl down, so it's nice to have it on a more portable format.
>Did the KF manage to avoid screwing anything up on the packaging?
Mostly done correctly. And, it's very nice to have the track with Stanley
Crouch banging away in a free jazz context: never know when you'll need to
wave it between you and his fists....

There was some back-and-forth about Joey's trio a couple of weeks ago.
I interviewed Joey today for a magazine article and he told me that he
has no firm plans to record the band; it's basically still just a live
thing.
He did say, however, that he's going to be spending the next month or
two writing, and that if something that fits the trio comes out of that
then they might record.
If there are any fellow drummers out there who dig Joey, he'll be giving
classes this summer at the Banff School of Arts in Alberta... a great
location to study in the mountains.
Down Home has a new record coming out in August.

I have on CD: Last Exit on Enemy, Koln on ITM, and Cassette Recordings '87
on Celluloid. Cassette Recordings was reissued as From the Board on Enemy a
few years ago. No idea as to current in-printness of these titles. Also,
I'd love a copy of Iron Path on CD.

There's a complete list of Last Exit CDs with tracklistings and other
details on my Ronald Shannon Jackson discography at the WNUR Jazzweb:
http://www.wnur.org/jazz/artists/jackson.ronald.shannon/discog.html
I haven't updated the thing in two years now, but it's actually still very
nearly up to date except for the new archival releases on KnitClassics
(most of which are previously released discs anyway). There were five Last
Exit releases, and they've all been on CD at some point.
These are the complete Last Exit recordings, to the best of my knowledge:
[release date - title (label), recording date]
1990 - Koln (ITM), recorded Feb. '86 in Cologne
1986 - Last Exit (Enemy), recorded Feb. '86 in Paris
1987 - The Noise of Trouble - Live in Tokyo (Enemy), recorded Oct. '86 in
Tokyo with Herbie Hancock and Akira Sakata
1988 - Cassette Recordings '87 (a.k.a. From the Board) (Celluloid, Enemy,
Charly), recorded in 1987 in Copenhagen, Den Haag and Allentown, PA
1988 - Iron Path (Virgin), recorded in 1988 in B.C. Studios, Brooklyn
1993 - Headfirst into the Flames - Live in Europe (MuWorks), recorded in
1989 in Stockholm and Munich
1990 - "The Sprawl" on Live at the Knitting Factory, Vol. 4 (A&M, Knitting
Factory Works), recorded on Feb. 3, 1990 at the Knitting Factory
Of these, 'Last Exit,' 'Noise of Trouble' and 'Cassette Recordings'/'From
the Board' are all listed on amazon.com. (The Knit release is probably
available, too - I didn't check as it's only one 9 minute track) I highly
recommend 'Cassette Recordings' but I'm obviously a partisan...
And Dave Trenkel, Bruce at Downtown Music Gallery often has 'Iron Path' in
his $10 remainder list.
Hope this is helpful,
