as has been said already here, it's hard to go wrong with charles. (in the notes
to the hal willner-produced mingus tribute 'weird nightmare,' which i highly
recommend, dr. john tells a story about meeting him and calling him 'charlie.'
he responded 'charles' and walked away. a few years later, they met again, and
unsure what he was supposed to say, dr. j called him 'mr. mingus,' to which he
replied 'charles' and walked away.)
some of the 'classic' mingus dates are a little tight'n'glossy for me. 'ah um'
'blues and roots' and 'mingus mingus mingus mingus mingus' are important works,
but a little constrained-feeling. my unwavering favorite for 14 years has been
'mingus presents mingus.' 'black saint and the sinner lady' is also truly truly
great. once your feet are saturated, go get 'mingus plays piano,' a beautiful,
stream of consciousness solo piano set. then, when you're ready to kick back and
relax a little, go get 'oh yeah.' be forwarned that 'the clown' has not aged
well (unless it was always embarassing). 'new tiajuana moods' has been mentioned
and is great, as is 'mingus dynasty' (the record, not the band) and 'mingus
revisited' (which includes two tracks of two ellington compositions played
simultaneously). the dark horse in the baron's arsenal is a soundtrack record
called 'cumbia and jazz fusion.' don't let the title scare you. two long tracks.
the cumbia piece is irresistable.
and that's not even getting into live dates (except for one).
as for the amy denio disc on kfw, i really like it alot. diverse, homespun, odd,
multitracked songs and sounds. very cool record. i don't know a lot about her.
she was in billy tipton mem sax 4, and i come across her name on occaision
(recent project with frith, i believe), but i've never found anything else that
helps me make sense of this eccentric, wonderful record. you won't play it every
week, but you'll be happy when you do. make the trade.

One disc with Bhob Rainey & Jack Wright I like is _Crawlspace/Universal
Noir_,
on the Tautology label:
http://members.aol.com/tautology3/recordings.html#catalog.
However the majority of the disc is duets between Bhob Rainey and Eric
Rosenthal,
with only one track a quartet of Rainey, Rosenthal, Wright & Taylor Ho
Bynum.
So you don't get too much Wright on this if that's what you're after.

Subject: bird, mingus
Surprised not to see any favorite Bird postings yet (as of last digest)
- -- I think he's as great as any improvisor in the 20th Century. Here's
a few off the top of my head (some of the titles may be approximate):
The Charlie Parker Story -- I think he's sitting on a throne on the
cover. This is the session with the classic recording of Koko. There
are some songs with multiple takes, which I usually find a bit tedious,
but there was such drama going on throughout the session (including
mystery piano players floating in and out, all documented on the liner
notes), and the playing is top shelf.
The Complete Live Charlie Parker on Savoy -- 4 CDs, many good live
sessions including live with Dizzy at Carnegie Hall. Kenny Dorham is
at the top of his game in his appearances. Miles also plays on some
dates. Very attractive packaging.
The Greatest Jazz Concert (AKA Jazz at Massey Hall). Diz, Bird, Bud,
Mingus, Max. A classic. Essential.
The Dial recordings are very very good too -- I actually prefer the
"best of" to the "complete" because there's so many alternate takes.
I find the Verve stuff a bit inconsistent. There's some very good stuff
in there, but I can't recall album names at the moment.
Regarding Mingus, I'd agree with most of what I've read. However, I
also have a special affection for Changes 1&2 -- I love this band with
George Adams and Don Pullen, and I think these sessions cook. Of
course, this was my first exposure to Mingus and I saw this band roar
during my formative years, so that adds sentimental value to my
judgement. On the other hand, it was good enough to reel me in....

To all Zorn-agains,
I produced an MP3 CD-ROM (698 Mb) with 143 Masada tracks (only 6 songs
missing). All songs bitrate 128 - 44100 Hz. I added 24 playlists:
01 alef
02 beit
03 gimel
04 dalet
05 hei
06 vav
07 zayin
08 het
09 tet
10 yod
11 zevulun
12 issachar
13 bar kokhba
14 masada songbook (all)
15 slow & twisted (compilation)
16 slow & melodious (compilation)
17 steady & melodious(compilation)
18 steady & exotic(compilation)
20 twisted & short: (compilation)
21 fast klezmer (compilation)
22 rob's masada (compilation)
23 killer masada (compilation)
24 soothing masada (compilation)
I also added beautiful Artwork files for the jewel case.
This incredible CD-ROM is only intended for _real_ fans who already possess
at least 7 Masada releases. This for obvious reasons.

Recently I was playing the Fennesz Plays single over and over again trying
to make out the references to the originals when I decided to take a break
and listen to Cecil Taylor's Jazz Advance. After Cecil finished I heard
crackling from the amp. I had a look and saw flames in the amp which I put
out.
Has anyone else had a amp catch fire or should I have expected this after
playing too much Fennesz and Cecil Taylor?

Subject: Mingus & Books
Altghough somebody mentioned the "weird nightmare" - the Hal Wilner tribute
to mingus - I think it deserves more attention: it's an exceptional album.
The only other comaprable 'tribute' stuff I know ( a very different thing,
anyhow) is Caine's Mahler. You'll find a lot of good freinds onit - Bill
Frisell, Joey Baron, Vernon reid, Don Byron ... also (if memory serves)
Keith Richards...
Concerning books: does anyone here know a swedish writer Lars Gustafsson?
He's quite incredible. His books (I know three of them - 'the wool', 'the
death of the beekeeper' and 'the family feast' - i do not know if those are
the english titles, i read them in polish) are quite strange - quite
'normal' on first impression, but they become more and more strange as you
continue the reading. They include both some super-realist description of
life in small towns in Sweden where NOTHING EVER happens, and
quasi-surrealist descriptions of the dreams and hopes of the persons
envolved - always seeking to escape the sorry and BORING conditions they are
living in. In an unclear way it makes me think of JZ' approach to music -
popular melodies & muasic genres, etc.
Other literary stuff I could recommend is P.K. Dick (no mystery) and L.F.
Celine (for Torture Garden fans ;-)...
Be well, Marcin

Funny, I just finished Skin Tight by the same author. Unusual crime novels
by a man who still has enough sense to be outraged, everything I've read by
him has been excellent. Also, people into travel essays should read Robert
Kaplan's Ends of the Earth, wherein our interpid traveler visits (and has
very interesting perspectives on) highly obscure places in west Africa,
central Asia, and southeast Asia.
I'll also include another recommendation for Willner's Mingus tribute.

Subject: otomo and gustafsson cds?
I've been perusing back issues of the Wire, and the November issue (with
Iggy on the cover) has an ad for a cd by Mats Gustafsson & Nu-Ensemblen,
Hidros One, a piece for nine improvisers, tape, and conductor. Barry Guy
and Raymond Strid are also mentioned. Anyone heard this and can comment?
It's not at any of my usual sources, so I'd also appreciate a tip on where
I might be able to find this stateside (it's on Caprice, a Swedish label --
not listed at Cadence, Forced, or Anomalous).
Also, the most recent Cadence mentions a cd on ChapChap by Kang Tae Hwan
(alto) which also includes Otomo and Ned Rothenberg. Anyone have
additional info on this item?

Subject: So. How'd it happen?
I'm curious about where you all began your exploration of "New" and/or
difficult music. In my own case, as much as you can trace this sort of
thing, my interest began with Zappa (as much reading about him as listening
to him), King Crimson and various and sundry Bop. I am not a musician, but I
appreciated that there was something more going on then 4/4: Oh, baby.
The CDs making the scene these days in my player are: Ensemble Moderne doing
Conlon Nancarrow, UI "Sharpie" EP, Japan "Tin Drum", Zappa "Jazz From Hell",
Zorn "Red Bird" and I'm on a Big Black jones while dans l'auto.
So how'd it start for you? Are you a musician? Can you carry a tune? If you
have kids, do you listen to Zorn with them?

check out this killer free jazz concert!!!!
(note as well that this duo plays the Cobalt Lounge in Portland on 2/25)
Coming to Seattle, WA this weekend:
=======================================
NELS CLINE / GREGG BENDIAN -
INTERSTELLAR SPACE REVISITED:
THE MUSIC OF JOHN COLTRANE
=======================================
APPEARING FEBRUARY 26th at THE RAINBOW
in SEATTLE, WA
**** with opening act: PROJECT W ****
=======================================
COST: $7 DOS (no advance tickets)
TIME: 9:30pm sharp
===============================================
AT: THE RAINBOW, 722 NE 45th St. (U-District) 206-634-1761
*21 & OVER ONLY unfortunately*
===============================================
***The Rainbow is pleased to welcome two incredibly
talented, accomplished, & versatile musicians to
Seattle: electric guitarist *NELS CLINE*
(of GERALDINE FIBBERS, SCARNELLA, BANYAN, MIKE WATT,
THURSTON MOORE, & NELS CLINE TRIO fame, among others)
*and*
percussionist *GREGG BENDIAN* (of "SIGN OF FOUR" -
w/PAT METHENY, INTERZONE, TRIO PIANISSIMO, CECIL
TAYLOR, DEREK BAILEY, & PETER BROTZMANN fame, etc.)
for what promises to be
a truly ~SPECIAL~ night of music!
Nels & Gregg are touring behind their *HIGHLY ACCLAIMED*
album "Interstellar Space Revisited: The Music of John
Coltrane" (Atavistic Records - http://www.atavistic.com)
- - which recently made WIRE (UK) Magazine's TOP TEN JAZZ
CD's OF 1999 LIST *and* is praised by none other than
RASHIED ALI HIMSELF in a four-page cover-story spread
currently found in the February issue of JAZZIZ Magazine!
- - From Wire: (7/99, p.53) "...the duo confirm the depth of
their communion with Coltrane's music, Cline floating his
notes on Bendian's vibraphone ripples. A poignant end to
a fearlessly executed project."
- - From Alternative Press: (10/99, p.83) - [4 out of 5 stars]
"...Cline's range is extraordinary...maintaining a clear
vision that unifies the disparate elements of Coltrane's
music...Gregg Bendian's drumming strikes an impressive
balance between raw power and avant-jazz..."
This Seattle performance will, like their above-mentioned
live CD, find them "covering" John Coltrane & Rashied Ali's
CLASSIC duo album "Interstellar Space" (rec. in 1967, just
before John's death) in its ENTIRETY! They'll offer up their
own rendition, if you will, of this landmark session - along
with some other choice late-era Coltrane selections!!!!!
Whether you choose to call their creations free jazz, space
music, avant-garde exploration, experimental improvisation,
(((or what have you)))
one thing's for SURE:
THIS IS PASSIONATE, AWE-INSPIRING *SOUL* MUSIC.

great articles linked up via his "unofficial" homepage:

***The opening band this evening, PROJECT W, is a fiery trio
that features saxophonist WALLY SHOUP alongside cellist BRENT
ARNOLD (Ota-Prota) & drummer GREG CAMPBELL. More on this fine
band of Seattle-based & free-jazz-influenced improvisers can
be found via Wally's website: http://www.speakeasy.org/wshoup/
Led by Wally, a longtime Seattle-based and world-renowned
saxophone adventurer (who, like Nels Cline, has also recorded
w/Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore), Project W are one of Seattle's
most exciting live music acts, regardless of "genre" - and the
word on these guys is spreading: In the fall of 1999, Wally
toured with guitarist Thurston Moore & the great Philly-based
percussionist Toshi Makihara. Their 9/20/99 Boston show was
recorded and will be released on the Sublingual Label this Spring.
Already out, on the other hand (on Shrat Field Recordings), is a
limited-edition LP showcasing PROJECT W's excellent opening
performance for SONIC YOUTH at Seattle's Moore Theatre in 1998.
No doubt highly impressed by Wally's uniquely wide-open free-jazz
vocabulary, Thurston sought him out for this recent collaboration,
and more will encounters are bound to follow.
In the meantime, remember that:
