Last Tuesday I went to a great concert at the Barbican (which as a venue =
I hate) a night of John Zorn.
First up Masada string trio ; Mark Feldman - violin (who I last saw at =
Ronnie Scotts with John Abercrombie),Greg Cohen - bass, and Erik =
Friedlander on cello.Zorn came on in combat pants , t-shirt and long =
hair.He sat on the floor in front of them conducting the dynamics and =
soloing.Lovely swinging mixture of chamber Jazz and Yiddish/Jewish folk =
music (no I don't know what to call it!).
Next set was the expanded Bar Kokhba which had Joey Baron on drums , =
Cyro Baptista on percussion and Marc Ribot on guitar.Much more of a film =
score/Latin/surf whatever feel, still no sax just Zorn's direction from =
the side.Lots more variety of mood , Ribot was slightly disappointing =
for me , the bits where he sticks stuff in the strings came across as =
half hearted ( maybe that's just in my mind ), the ebb and flow of the =
music was purely from Zorn's conduction?.Then again the musicians are so =
good that that's a tiny quibble.
The last set by Masada was what most people had been waiting for.Zorn =
played full on alto alongside Baron,Cohen and the great Dave Douglas on =
trumpet.Zorn's alto playing was superb, mixing up his Jackie McLean and =
paint stripping free outbursts at the speed of light. This was a =
burning set , almost alternating between breakneck cartoon/bam bam bam =
changes of tempo/mood , and the slower more Jazz/folk stuff.I do love =
Dave Douglas but enjoy his more lyrical side than the screechy up tempo =
stuff.I saw the Tiny Bell Trio last year at the Cheltenham Jazz festival =
which was truly mind-blowing.The Zorn night was certainly an =
event......after almost an hour of Masada with a memorable encore , it =
was a mad dash to the pub for a quick drink...................as soon as =
I hear anything about the broadcast I'll let everyone know.........Ian.

ok, i meant to keep outta this, but now it's getting good. i've not seen the t+e
art, but have found myself defending jz's covers in the past (and i agree with
jzitt that, at least in this case, the art shouldn't be separated from the
artist). But now the question has been cast more widely.
=-->Waxman wonders:
Others artists may have been rapists, murders, drunks, had very
bad manners or any done a variety of other things of which we may not
personally aprove. But can we allow this to affect our appreciation (or not) of
their art?
tough one. really. as an opinionated fella on any number of topics -- social,
political and otherwise -- i've grappled with not just disagreeing with but
feeling heavily disappointed by the views of creators whose art i like. the crux
for me was close to 10 years ago, when i read mingus' autobiography "beneath the
underdog" and had to fess up that the guy was pretty piggish. at first, i wanted
to sell all my mingus records (i was younger then). i decided to keep them, but
still didn't listen to them. finally, i realized that my mingus boycott was not
effecting the world, and i was only depriving myself of music that i did, and
still do, love. (for the record, the mingus bio is pretty sexist, includes his
pimpin and whorin, but not really worse than that).
now the balance i *try* to maintain is that if a performer shares ideals with
me, whether or not they are reflected in the work, that only adds to my
exhileration. politics is a big part of why i love eugene chadbourne's work,
even his instrumental stuff. if a song with lyrics is blatantly objectionable, i
am very unlikely to listen to it again. but if there are views held by an artist
but not demonstrated in the work, i do my best to set it aside. like i said, i
still listen to mingus. i can't, however, say the same about gayle, though i
wish i could.
zorn's personal politics have never come into question in my mind because, while
i don't necessarily assume that he and i would agree on israel, animal research
or the human genome project, nothing about his work (including art) has ever
seemed to require justification to me (the way, i don't know, something like the
robot rape painting on that guns n roses record would)(and i do like g'n'r, but
wouldn't care to hang out with them). he's just never struck me as advocating
the things depicted in the historical or artistic images he chooses to use. one
thing that i think is important is they often are pieces that were not created
for the work, and we know what an appetite he has for all kinds of art. like
myself, he seems willing to face unpleasant images. but i hope nobody would
assume me a gangster because i enjoy a scorcese flick.
=-->Meanwhile, IOUaLive1 wonders:
BTW--- where did they come up
with this name? I think Jamaaladeen is the only Philadelphian, and he aint
all that young. I thought Punk Funk Harmodelic fit them pretty well. The
sax player that sat in with them was named Danny Zamiro, he looked all of
about 20 years old, and damn he can play!!
my guess is this is danny zamir (no 'o'), who leads the striking trio satleh
(formerly the nfs trio and the not for sale trio), and who i've pumped up here
before. satleh will be playing mondays at the tap bar (knit, no cover) next
month, and are supposed to be doing a tzadik cd with the masada string trio this
year.

So it's 9pm, and I'm sitting here at work in the computer geek suburbs of
Boston trying to figure out why my code doesn't run on one machine when it
ran on the other one. So instead of flailing any further I decide to check
around on the web to see what's going on in the city, and I find out that
Christian Marclay, Ikue Mori, and Elliot Sharp played a show earlier
tonight. This is a situation that I'd, umm, like to avoid in the future...
hence my question: is there a local mailing list I should be on that would
have told me about this?

And for the love of god, someone point me in the directions of
Marclay dates. Someone said he was playing Chicago, and I've never
heard anything else........

I only found out about the concert an hour beforehand so unfortunately
I couldn't pass on information. The concert was sold out (well
attended by the Boston press, which doesn't normally get to cover
music of this sort), but by purchasing CDs from some of the students
at the boston museum school, i got them to trade me one of their
tickets that they couldn't use.
The concert featured single sets by each of Mori, Marclay, and Sharp
with a joint improvisation after intermission. I felt that the solo
works were more solid than the trio. I didn't know Mori's work before
and was totally impressed by the intensity of her playing (multiple
drum machines) -- maybe it was her subdued participation in the second
half that made it flatter for me.
I'm guessing coming from the classical side of things that I don't see
as many innovative guitar players as I should, so seeing the glidepad
attached to Sharp's instrument was a great surprise for me. going to
see if i can put one next to the thumb rest of my bass clarinet.
The concert was part of a pretty innovative showcase of music as
installation art going on this week at the museum school at the fenway.

The article in Sundays NYT on this guy made his work sound, at the least,
pretty intriguing. Anyone on the list heard his "spectral" music? Brian
Olewnick>>
Hi Brian,
Funny you should ask. I just got back from Merkin and the Grisey
tribute. Basically, the idea of spectral music has to do with the use of
orchestral instruments playing overtones and processes usually done through
electronics. I have to write a full article/review in it/him for
LaFolia.com, but the brief version is that the music has to do with partials
and overtones, and manipulating parts of the partials... I'm not as
musicologically adept as I'd like to be, plus I'm extremely tired. Haven't
read the NYTimes in years; I'm allergic to the newprint ink, no joke.
Excellent playing by the group. Bonus: I found a Steve Beresford I'd never
seen before cut-out at Tower for six bucks. Yay!
Love to all,
Stevie the Monkeyboy

Forgive the minor spam.....final revisions of the Anthony Braxton
Discography have been made, and the printing films are under way. Should be
out by March 1. It's updated to Washington, so for now it's pretty good
(Skoplje information is in the To Be Published section). I have a
distributor who will sell to individual too: price is 50.000 liras or 25
dollars plus p&p. If youre interested I can post the details.

Just wondering, is the "despicable act" in child pornography the taking of
the photos? Quite an ironic point, considering some of the discussions
we've been having...

so, who is that guy? anyone got more info bout him?
sorry bout my last mail naming micah gaugh as the "other"
sax player. he used to be with them last year.
he was not intimidated by zorn, either. actually, he was like
the "diva" of the band when i saw them.
related question: who did the singing at the tonic - if there
was any. (micah gaugh sometimes used to sing a few lines)

Nobody did any singing (thankfully). I saw Michah Gaugh play with them too,
in fact I think it was their first ever gig... I dont know if "diva" is the
word I would use. He wasnt even on the bill, he seemed to be just sitting
in, like he does every where else. I thought his "singing" at that gig was
pretty awful. I've seen Michah Gaugh in quite a few different settings, some
of which he even sounded good, but I just dont think he fit in too well with
this group.

"Cartridge Music" by John Cage, and "Dark River" for four amplified bass

also of interest:
music for banjo, pipa, guitar, and others by George Crumb, David Leisner and
Paul Elwood

Stephen Drury, piano

Threadgill is one of my favorites too, and I've enjoyed the pointers to
albums of his that I don't already have (the ones on Black Saint). But as
I go to Amazon and cdnow checking for availability, I see that the two VVC
albums on Columbia are now out of print, so anyone who sees them and thinks
s/he might want them, you should pick them up. I'll definitely go along
with the crowd and recommend them both highly.
