Subject: Zorn "game piece" performance update
Thanks everyone for your help, but Ijust recieved an E-mail from Mr.
Friedlander, and he kindly gave me all the details of the performance. It is
actually going to be on Saturday the 11th. It is a performance of Zorn's
pre-Cobra "game piece", entitled "Darts". There will be two performances at
8 and 10. The musicians include Friedlander, Marc Ribot, Zorn, Jim Pugliese,
and Jim Staley. The dancers include Marlon Barrios, Kun Yin Lin, Tasha
Taylor, and two others which were not mentioned. The piece is scored for 5
musicians and 5 dancers as well as an announcer, who I assume will be
choreographer Lynn Shapiro. The Washington Square Church is located on 135
W. 4th St. Hope to see you all there!

Regarding Egberto's Carmo label: I've heard that ECM distributes them
in Europe (but I've also been told that someone is buying ECM from
Polydor, which is why I can't find any ECM Gismonti for Christmas
presents -- any intelligence on this).
My favorite Carmo''s are Alma (solo piano) and Fiexe de Luz (fusion
band incl. electric guitar)
In any event, Gismonti has a home page last time I checked -- and he
even responded twice to my email in his delightful broken English.

Out of curiosity, from whence did you glean this particular statement? I
don't dispute what you're, but it was my understanding, having heard a few
performances of "The Dead Man" during its first year of existence, that it
was a tribute to the late Robert Mapplethorpe, but nothing more explicit
than that was stated at the time. I suppose that a tribute to that
particular artist could be considered to have been inspired by S/M scenes,
but there was so much more to Mapplethorpe than that... Tell me more.

Hello,
A while ago, some of you asked if Radio-Canada would ever broadcast the
concert the Peter Brotzmann Tentet gave in Victoriaville in May. Well,
according to the web page of "Le Navire Night" (http://radio-cananda.ca
/radio/navire/calendrier.html), it will be broadcast on February 20th.
They don't mention if this will be the complete show...
On the page, they also list other concerts of the FIMAV that will be
broadcast in a near future.
Hope this helps,
Mathieu Belanger

Subject: Sharing Zorn related MP3's
JazZorns,
Maybe some of you have heard about http://www.napster.com. This program
enables users to connect with other users' local mp3 directories (from
computer to computer in other words). Plus there's the possibility to chat.
I believe this is a wonderful tool for Zornlisters. As for me, I'm always
curious to hear one or two tracks from, let's say, Taboo and Exile, before I
buy the CD. Well, it is now possible for all listers to share one or two
tracks from their new CD's so others can find out whether they like it too
without having to upload them to a server first. I'm not talking about full
albums, just one or two tracks per album. True music lovers still buy albums
:-)
As long as the group "Avant Garde" isn't available with Napster, I'd suggest
we populate the "Jazz" group. You will be asked to choose a user name. Pick
something like "zorn_025". This will help identifying the zornlisters! Don't
worry if all your MP3's aren't AG, just make sure you have something that
could interest most of us ;-) Oh yeah, since all Napster's servers aren't
fully connected, it is possible that users who are both connected to Napster
at the same time will not be able to see each other. They're working on
that.
To give all members of this list an idea of how many people are joining
Napster, please email me privately announcing you joined napster. I will
post the results later.
To me the best part of the Zorn list is to get to know more about new
releases. That's why I urge people to benefit from this new tool. Looking
forward to seeing soms Zorn related music on this overly poppy

Join 'em!

The story that i heard is that this was a
contract-breaker for Lou Reed. He owed whatever label
two LPs, and that's what he produced.
I don't know that he put a lot of work into it.
But I think that each channel (left/right) is a
totally different track. Also, I thought each side
ended in a skip track. Anyone know?
Anyway, I'm amazed that it was reissued, Lou Reed or
not.

You're very kind with Egberto's English, aren't you?
My English teacher doesn't feel the same as you, when I make mistakes close
to broken English...
Anyway, regarding Brazilian musicians, it's worth checking out Viraloucos'
Cyro Baptista on Avant, with Greg Cohen, Marc Ribot, Chango Spassiuk, Romero
Lubambo and Nana Vasconcelos (who also conducts the Children's Choir in the
amazing "Sapo Cururu").
Last but not least, you also have Zorn blowing in Brazilian grooves.
Unique!

Hola Hugo,
Thanks for the adviso on Viraloucos -- I've put it en la cima de mi
lista.
Gismonti is one of my very favorites, and I've often wondered why he
doesn't get more media attention. I've seen him just once live, about
12 years ago in duets with Carneiro and he was electrifying, really
mindblowing. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
"Feixe de Luz (Todo comeco e involuntario)" was recorded in 1987 or
1988, right after his mother died. It was inspired by her death and is
rich with childhood memories (they emerge through the moods and the
bright, simple melodies) and a feeling of passages. There are 16 songs
listed (40 minutes of music), but if I remember correctly they mostly
segue into one another without breaks -- rather like an extended suite.
The band is called Academia de Dancas but is bigger and with a
different attitude (and personnel) than the Academia de Dancas heard on
1980's ECM "Sanfona":
Robertinho Silva (drums and percussion)
Jaquinho Morelenbaum (cello)
Mingo (zabumba & percussion)
Nivaldo Ornelas (soprano sax)
Zeca Assumpcao (bass)
Andre Geraissati (electric guitar)
Paulo Sergio (clarinet)
Paulo Moura (alto sax)
Luis Alves (bass)
Alexandre & Bianco (laughing) (I think these are his kids)
and Egberto on Piano, voz and synthesizers.
Ciao,
Martin

We've been singing the praises of the Jimmy Giuffre "60's" 3, and my
listening to FREE FALL especially has brought me back to Paul Bley, this man
I know so little---but what a revelation, what a beautiful, humorous,
personal style: what a variation on nobody this guy is! My listening has
only included his early work with the JG3, the guest spots on Franz
Koglmann's neat A WHITE LINE (unfortunate liner notes, those), and the
beautiful TIME WILL TELL (w/ Barre Phillips and Evan Parker, highly
recommended), as well as a couple nice solos on the Paul Haines double album
DARN IT!
I'd like to open the floor briefly for recommendations for good things to
look out for, simply because I think anyone on the list who hasn't dug Bley
yet, should. And I'd like to listen to more of his stuff as well, of
course.
Cheers, and thanks,
