don't think this came up here, but my apologies if it has :
some of my co-workers were looking through the new rolling stone today, which
features their top 100(?) albums of the '90s. so, they got my opinionated
self to comment on said list. amidst some of the rubbish on there, i suddenly
see sonny sharrock's 'ask the ages'. not high up on the list, but certainly
not tagged to the end either. i don't know if i should be thrilled or
dismayed at this. i suppose anything that gives sharrock some exposure,
particularly for that album, can only be a good thing.
peace,
dave

Subject: Re: translations of Masada titles
Many of the titles are quite obscure, and seem to be chosen at random.
Eg. on disk 8, "kodashim" and "taharot" are names of sections of the Talmud,
while "mochin" is an Aramaic word meaning "heads"(which could be
a reference to the hasidic concept of "small-mindedness" but I doubt it).
"Khebar", "Amarim", and "Abed-Nego" are unconventional transliterations
which I don't recognize.

Hey all of you in the New York Area,
Sorry for the slightly off topic-ness of this, but fans of Naked City,
etc. will probably dig this a lot:
Thinking Plague will be playing Wednesday, September 8 at 8pm at the
Knitting Factory for DMG's 8th Anniversary. These guys are some of the
best musicians that I've ever heard and everyone in the band agrees that
the music is some of the hardest stuff that any of them has ever
attempted. I encourage anyone in the area to try to make the show.
You'll like what you hear.

I'm pretty sure that is an Avant release,
so it is bound to be expensive since it
is a Japanese import.

has it for $15.45. Not a bad price for an Avant title.

Is that how the show was billed? Thast interesting, since I dont think any of
their gigs in NYC have been billed that way (although I know for festivals in
Europe the promoters always require some type of billing name... and often
they can be thought up of on a whim and be pretty corny). But Zorn did some
gigs at the Knit about 10 years ago billed as "Emergency", with Big John
Patton, Ribot and Jeff Hirschfield. No doubt a nod to the old Tony Williams
Lifetime album.

I know that Zorn/Medeski/Ribot/Wolleson played as "Emergency" at the
Knitting
Factory a week or two back. In fact, I was about to write to the list
asking if
this was an indication of them becoming a recording venture. Based on
what I
read from you, it seems "Emergency" is nothing but a name to use. But I

According to the newsletter sent out by New York City record store Downtown
Music Gallery, Zorn/Frith/Laswell/Lombardo recorded three songs together the
day they played the Bell Atlantic Jazz Fest in New York. Those three songs
will supposedly be released on Zorn's next Tzadik release, Taboo and Exile,
in either September or October. The newsletter also said that there won't be
a full length album until they have recorded enough material. That is all I
know.
