According to David Meeker's Jazz In The Movies, it was indeed James, who
also served as music director for the movie. BTW, I wonder how the
Leonardo de Capricio (sp?) vesrion of the Chet Baker story is supposed to
be coming along. We can only hope that it will be Steve Bernstein rather
than Chuck Mangione who is asked to dub the trumpet parts.

Polcas de mi Tierra
Chango Spasiuk
"Polcas de mi Tierra" is the latest work of the argentinian
accordionist Chango Spasiuk.
You could say that talk about this guy on the list is off topic, but I
think this work deserves to be known by you. We can label "Polcas de
mi Tierra" as a World Music record, because it is focused on the
evolution of the music of the ucranian inmigrants who came to
Argentina at the end of the last century. The disk has 35 tracks
including songs and testimonies of the people of Apostoles (the town
where Spasiuk was born). The musicians change track by track and most
of them are not professionals, but they are quite good. Also a
representative choir of the region performs on three tracks. The most
jazzy track is a free improvisation dedicated to the Hoshiuv Virgin,
this improvisation is inspired on the notes of the two bells of the
Apostoles church belfry.
I highly recommend to have a listen to this cd. As a reference Chango
Spasiuk plays the accordion on another very good cd.: Cyro Baptistans
"Vira Loucos" (Music of the Brazilian composer Heitor Villalobos)
which was produced by John Zorn and recorded on Avant. Some of the
musicians who play in "Vira Loucos" are well known on the list, like
Marc Ribot, Greg Cohen and John Zorn himself.
I hope these comments will be welcome. More than my two cents I want
to say these cds. are two little pearls.

The problem is that it is not only Cadence that is raving about them, but
basically *EVERYBODY* who listened to them!
I only own COMPILATION III (2xCD on Bruce's Finger) and I totally agree with
the raving critics. This is fantastic structured free improv with great
players (specially the always amazing John Butcher). I think that Fell is
solving the problem of channelling the energy of free improvisers in a
very interesting and successful (based on the critic reaction) way (and
quite different from what Zorn does with his game pieces).
This makes me even more eager to listen to the upcoming Fell on Erstwhile.

Thanks Patrice. Your comments put me over the edge and I'll cough up the
$30. Inflated reviews set up an inner dichotomy between the side of me
that is dying to hear music at the pinnacle of 20th Century art and the
side of me that knows the expectations thus set will be sorely unmet.
Maybe not the case here. Similar accolades were heaped on the FMP release
of some 80s K. Tippett solo peformances. I'll raise the risk to $50 total
and see if Cadence Mail Order can lead me closer to God.

I've been out of town and out of Ticketmaster's far-reaching range for

Of course we could work out some sort of deal...
Alternately, the ticketmaster webpage stated the possibility of the

for these
shows, if any of you know of the possibility of something like this
going down...
Thanks a lot,

Mingus also was bitten by the avant-garde bug, and his band (Eric Dolphy on
alto sax, Ted
Curson on trumpet, Dannie Richmond on drums) mirrored Ornette Coleman's
quartet. On
"What Love" and "All The Things You Could Be Now If Sigmund Freud's Wife

The album also
features perhaps Mingus' greatest protest song, "Fables of Faubus," with
the original
vocals that were edited from Mingus Ah-Um by Columbia, fearful that the
lyrics would be
too controversial.
What album is this refering to?

Hi, all. This may interest some zornlisters, especially the Radical
Jewish Culture crowd:
I'm pleased to say that I have a new CD out via mp3.com's
DAM label. It's the score from my 1992 theatre piece, "Shekhinah:
The Presence".
It's rather different from other stuff of mine that you might have
heard -- for one thing, it's mostly other people's voices. Some
is ambient, some sounds a bit industrial, and some is gently
melodic.
You can listen to all the tracks in RealAudio format
(and, if you're so moved, buy the CD for $5.99) at

Complete liner notes (both in HTML and in PDF format, as a page

Trent Radio invites you to help create an improvised
"Day Long Song" on 11 August 1999.
Starting at 11am (Eastern Daylight Time), we are inviting
musicians, poets and sound-makers from all time zones to
participate in person and by phone throughout the day with a
continuously changing group.
There is no presumption that the "song" will conform to any
common definition of "songness", though it is expected that
idiomatic explorations will be episodically embraced and
abandoned during the day.
Anyone is welcome to contribute whatever they what to the piece
by coming into Trent Radio at 715 George Street North at

Many star contributors are already slated to contribute so
please count yourself among them and come or call in to the

Seconded. It's a fine recording far powerful to ignore. Most of it was
recorded live and some tracks are variously configured into full ensemble
(accordion, violin, bass, percussion), trio (violin, guitar, accordion/
violin, box, accordion), duo (accordion/guitar) and solo performance by
Spasiuk, who reminds me somehow the great Guy Klusevsek.

A real highlight. Very heartful indeed.

This is beautiful music with memorable melodies and high level of
interaction. Not cutting-edge, not hard-line, but hardly mainstream either.
"Polcas..." is a joyous cd; it┤s a proof that not all Argentinian
music is as sad as tango is, though if you don't like polkas, you won't get
in
it anyway.

were sold out. That really sucks.
But I have another opportunity to see them, possibly.
But it will be difficult. Can anyone out there tell me how there show
is and if it's worth making a supreme effort to see them live?
What kind of show do they usually do?
Do they do any of their Disco Volante stuff live, and how does that
turn out?
Can anyone recommend the new album? Haven't heard much props for it
here yet...
I heard it's good, but different still from the last, more like Secret
Chiefs 3.
Let me know the scoop, please!

Haven't seen them this time around (being in Australia) but all reports say
that the live shows are excellent. The material played so far includes
nearly all of the new album, Travolta, Love Is A Fist and My Ass Is On Fire
from the first album, and the odd track from Disco Volante too, probably
the same versions as on the last tour (all the tunes turned out great
except maybe Platypus) except with the addition of Merry Go Bye Bye.
They're recycling covers so far, some of them being Morricone's Citta
Violenta, Billy Squire's The Stroke and Begin The Beguine, and also
chucking some of their early metal stuff from demos...

The best way I can describe the album is really great but not really in the
same league as their previous work. It's become more song-oriented, and the
songs really fit into one or two styles for the most part. There is one
song that sounds like SC3 but Patton is the one who gets writing credit for
it. There's a whole lot of guests on it too, like Eyvind Kang, Will Winant,
Carla Kihlstedt and Michael Peloquin... Oh by the way, the album's quite
short (under 45 minutes).

They are definitely worth making sacrifices to check out, unless they pull
what they did in Toronto and show up on stage 3 hours late after a 2
hour long soundcheck and then get booted off the stage after 45 minutes
because there was another show shceduled after them.
At the show they did Travolta/My Ass Is On Fire, Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz and
most of the new album, with no covers or mysterious tunes. They are
tight and energetic and it is an amazing experience to see
Patton conduct the group doing this material and inspire them to pull it
off live.

I've seen from the latest playlists, besides Merry GO Bye Bye they're
doing Violenza Domestica and Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz.

It's quite different from previous efforts, as was Disco Volante from
the self titled. It is quite varied, but as the title, California,
suggests, there is a Beach BOys-surf feeling through most of the album.
This album is GREAT! GO get it.

Some parts may sound a bit like SC3, but like you said, most
surprisingly, these parts are credited to Patton.
BTW, anyone saw the Zorn/Patton show i think it was on the 4/8? Any
