Once read a review of a (somewhat recent) Pizicatto 5 album describing it in just this manner. It kinda works as I've experienced once or twice. On related note, anyone heard / like / dislike their latest CD?
Of course, Locus Solos would clear a room full of party people in most cases. Darn it I sold that disc (the orig. release too!) back to a shop for a few bucks (which was a few bucks less than I orig. paid.)

Are you sure? Cadence, where the LPs have been available for years, still
lists them as vinyl-only. If your source is the (new) Rolling Stone Guide,
then forget about it. As you've already seen via their goof-up on
Threadgill's 'death' (afaik he's very much alive), the new guide is shoddy, a
disappointment considering that the circa-1985, slender Rolling Stone Jazz
Guide was very good, in large part because of Bob Blumenthal. The new guide
is pretty lousy, and they have no consistent policy of what they review, even
though they pretend to.

The guy also in charge of the letters was really pathetic. He knew very little
about anything and did not even realize that the people writing to the magazine
were more informed that him. I remember a letter witten to the magazine about
Peter Greenaway. The guy in charge of the letters added a couple of sentences
making fun at the author of the letter, not realizing than in the process he
made a total ass of himself...
Do you remember the review of a trombone quartet (Ray Anderson?)? It was also
quite pathetic. Being clueless is one thing, but with a little bit of talent
you can say something not too embarassing. This one was hard to believe with its
level of immature stupidity.
It seemed to me that the reviewers were coming more and more from a
rock background and were asked to review music genres they had no clue of
(and music which put OPTION at its best in earlier years).
Anyway, I am still sad that the magazine does not exist because it
was still a great magazine for music that did not fit well-defined genres
(not contemporary classical, not rock, not jazz, not improv, etc).
