Burell is actually *from* Hawaii. In the early 1990s he was living in
Philly, though. Can any list members confirm that?
Or has he returned to Hawaii, at which point, I guess he would be the
Kidd Jordan of Wakiki.

Hello there,

Well, I should probably just come forward and confess: I have pretty bad
taste in music. :)
That is, I actually do like a lot of ECM material, even the ECM-ish stuff,
if that makes sense. Yep yep yep, some of my favorite ECM-ish records are:
Eberhard Weber Colours - Silent Feet
Stockhausen/Stockhausen/Thonis - Aparis
Egberto Gismonti - ZigZag
Pat Metheny - 80/81
Ralph Towner - Solo Concert
John Abercrombie - Arcade
Miroslav Vitous: Journey's End
John Surman: Amazing Adventures of Simon Simon
Bill Connors: Theme to the Gaurdian
Tamia & Pierre Favre - De La Nuit...Le Jour
Hope I didn't give anyone a stroke with that Metheny record in there. I
don't know, I guess I like this stuff because it's low pressure.
Though I gotta give Manny (Eicher) a big thumbs up for some of the weirder
stuff he's been releasing recently. I can't remember if we've discussed
first impressions of that recent Wachsmann/Lytton disc already, but I'm
personally loving it. The music is pretty alien and well-balanced, with a
good amount of variety. Quite understated music. Unfortunately most of the
reviews I've read take half of the review to talk about Evan Parker!, so
one gets the mistaken impression that "Some Other Season" is just the Evan
Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble without the support of Parker. I *would*
formally recommend this record to you guys, but I realize now that I've
probably lost all zorn-list credibility by coming forward with my
relationship with ECM. :)
Oh, which reminds me, BMG just dropped ECM from their distribution, so
expect a flood of ECM titles in those cut-out bins in the next few months.
Best,

Not to be overly picky, but the copy I have is on Disques du soleil, C-DSA
54047, with the notice of God Mountain Europe. The DSA logo is on both the
cover and the disk. This also reminds me of a DSA/GME compilation called
Neu Konservatiw, which includes a short version of Null & Void in addition
to selections by other hardcore bands (Altered States, etc.). The
discography's a little out of date, because the first Consume album was
released on ReR as well as on Creativeman.

This comment got me wondering if anyone has any passionate opinions about
Metheny's work with Derek Bailey, Gregg Bendian and Paul Wertico or about
his Zero Tolerance For Silence ALBUM and how does his devotion to the
'low pressure' work relate to his free playing.

I've been pleasantly surprised with DMG's low prices on the AM stuff. I have
a nasty habit of buying large quantities. I think the avg price for single

I've got the Zero Tolerance album, and respect it more than I like it. I
applaud Metheny's desire to break outside the smooth jazz audience, but
wish I liked the results more. I've heard more interesting feedback and
noise guitar elsewhere (Frith, Wittwer, Kaiser, heck, even Haino, etc.)

Well, unlike Ken, I think it's quite possible to be both a Gerry Hemingway
fan and Tomasz Stanko fan and not be put to sleep by the latter. :-)
For Stanko, I'd recommend _Bluish_ on Power Bros or _Balladyna_
on ECM (not Gowi! the Gowi title has 20-some variations of the same
basic theme, and overall does not sustain interest...I don't know how Bob
Rusch
put this in the Editor's List a few years back for one of the best
recordings
of the year). On those, you get lots of his great trumpet over a freeish
rhythm
section. If you want something more in line with _Litania_, I agree _Matka
Joanna_ might do the trick or you might try some Krzysztof Komeda recordings
as well, Cadence just got a batch in. I like a Komeda compilation on the
Polskie Nagrania
Muza label I got awhile ago that has some trio stuff, a group with Bernt
Rosengren, and
the whole _Astigmatic_ album. It's called _Polish Jazz Vol. 3 Krzysztof
Komeda_.
It's listed on the website
http://www.geo.ryerson.ca/~michalak/komeda/disc.htm.
Stanko plays only on the _Astigmatic_ part of the compilation though.
Have fun,
John

I like it, it is like a combination of Closing Time and Bone Machine. Mule

textural and experimental feel of bone machine. My favorite tracks are
cold water, and chocolate Jesus.

I agree with Eric, some of the slow songs seem to be a bit recycled.
There is also a striking connection between some of the slower Waits songs
and Sprinsteen's Nebraska album. Real honest, salt of the earth feel.
