He has one project called the Weakener, which is fairly typical Harris
drum and bass.
Anyone else think M. Harris is hurting for some new ideas? I'm a big
Painkiller fan, and he's great at that, but I've always felt that most
Scorn tracks sound unfinished. I have many of his disks, but I stopped
buying them a few years ago, cause it felt like I was buying the same album
over and over...
I'm starting to feel the same way about Laswell......

Really? In what way is Jazzonia like Sacred System like Purple Trap like
Invisible Design like Hashisheen? (Those being the last 5 CD's put out by
Laswell)
I admit that many of the ambient discs sound the same to me as well as many
of the dub stuff, but Laswell's output is far too diverse to pigeonhole like
that.

I am within a few hundred miles by living in Toronto, but unfortunately not
close enough to drop by regularly. With Manhattan being one of the most
expensive cities in the world
in which to visit (and live), sadly I can't be there as often as I
would like to. When we were there last October, we saw Assif Tshar and
Susi Ibarra at the Brecht Forum.(Your first show if I'm not mistaken).
I have an idea. We'll be at the 2nd half of the Vision Fest in late May.
So why don't you put together some inexpensive afternoon and/or late night
sessions to compliment the main Festival itself. If you have the time and
space, the audience will be there.
If that doesn't happen, I'll have to wait until the next time I'm in NYC
to get to the Forum. I've regretted missing many of your earlier shows.
regards.

Speaking of NYC shakuhacho players, what has Ned Rothenberg been up to
lately? His solo CD on Leo has a couple of tracks where he plays shakuhachi.

Subject: request for reviews
first off, sorry for this cross-post. i'm looking for people to send me
reviews on the albums on three of my discographies : lori carson, mick harris
and eraldo bernocchi. eventually i'll do the same for my laswell dicography,
but that will be a major undertaking. for collections or soundtracks that
they appear on, i'd like the focus of the review to be on their
contributions, with some word on the album in general. obviously then, i'm
looking for more than one review on some collections that these artists have
contributed tracks to seperatly. i'll probably only post the first 3 or 4
reviews i get (good or bad) so don't feel slighted if for some reason some
reviews don't get posted. any help would be much appreciated, and please, let
me know how you wish to be credited. thanks.

This poll is one of the most confusing things I've ever read. How about
these other results?
Best Overall Musicians
1. Pat Metheny
2. Wynton Marsalis
3. William Parker
Best Working Group
1. MM&W
2. David S. Ware 4tet
3. Fourplay
Best Bassist
1. Christian McBride
2. William Parker
3. Dave Holland
I'm thinking there have gotta be a bunch new readers (me for instance) but
the old guard must be hanging on...
fourplay???

I got mine the day before yesterday (slightly earlier release in Europe I
guess), and it has been hogging all CD time since then. The final track,
_Come On Up to the House_, is a rollicking, "forget your troubles and
woes", gospel-tinged anthem destined to become a classic, in a just world.

Don't know about availability, but I'm sure I won't be the only person
to warn you that _Broken Shadows_ is *not* a great listen -- the
quality of the recording is extremely poor, even though the music,
when you can hear it, is pretty cooking. *Don't* spend $20 on a CD
issue unless you can audition it first.
BTW I'm talking about my vinyl pressing from, I think, the mid-80s
(not certain as it's not here), and from memory it doesn't have the
same tracks as those Steve Smith lists, so maybe we're at cross
purposes here.
Sorry to be confusing,
Rich

Subject: Re: Mingus on Candid
In Europe, at any rate, I don't think the situation is as bad as Ken
Waxman says; tho' I'll have to qualify that. That is, copies of
Mingus Presents Mingus, Mingus, Newport Rebels, Jazz Life (?), etc.
can still be found. The bad news is that they're reissues by a
company called ZYX (also responsible for a lot of ESP catalogue), and
the sound on Mingus Presents Mingus is not tremendous (and this is
coming from me, who's rarely ever got a bad word to say about quality
of sound on CD). The other bad news is that the two sessions, which
divide up perfectly onto the 3 CDs of the Mosaic set, are scattered
here there and everywhere on the Candid issues.
My Mosaic set was stolen a few years ago, but I e-mailed Mosaic a
couple of years ago, and they were happy to sell me ($15 each) the
second (quartet expanded up to 10 piece) and third (Eldridge, Dolphy,
Knepper, Flanagan, Jo Jones) discs, of which some copies were left
over, even though the set had been sold out for some years. Ann Osso
was the person I spoke to - and I subsequently bought other bits and
pieces from sold out Mosaic sets. i don't have their e-mail address
handy: maybe (?) mosrec@ixnet.net.com (?) But if they have ANY discs
of the set left, it's worth it!!
