on the subject of jim black, and not jimmy carl black, let me recommend the trio
recording on hat art from last year with ellery eskelin and andrea parkins.
black is involved in a # of projects, but this trio is some of his most
sensitive playing, i think. past recordings haven't done justice to them live;
this one at least comes close.
and, is eye's book "nanoo" available in english? is it mostly text or visual
stuff?

Did anyone on this list attend this festival? Tony Reif, you still out
there? More importantly, does anyone know if it was recorded? I had a
flyer about it, before it happened, and the line-up was amazing.
As for Freedman, my recent exposure to her has been the one track on Luc
Houtkamp's latest CD, Duets. As usual, it's a great album. Houtkamp
hasn't disappointed me yet, as an artist or label owner. Even the
non-improv things on X-OR are really good, and this is coming from someone
who is quite biased toward improv. Gert-Jan Prins' Noise Capture is an
hour of static, but a lot of fun. The latest is a drum and bass type of
thing by Huib Emmer, and though I seldom listen to this type of thing, I
think this one is well done.

Anyway, back to Freedman - she did a duet with Lee Pui Ming in Toronto a
couple of years ago, opening for Lake/Cyrille Workman trio. I was pretty
impressed, having never heard her before. I've heard Lerner's other stuff,
her Cuban inspired album, and wasnt' thrilled. I haven't ever seen a Queen
Mab disc around to buy, but would probably be willing to give them a listen
based on the little Freedman I've heard. There is one on 9 Winds, but I
don't know how it is.

Subject: recent Evan Parker roundup
well, the prolific bearded one has been at it again. I count four recent
releases by Mr. Parker as a leader (Peter Stubley's page says five, but I
think he's counting the LJCO). anyway, here they are, with brief comments:
1) Monoceros (Chronoscope). this is a reissue of one of his solo soprano
records from 1978. it's about what you'd expect if you've heard his solo work
before, which isn't to slight it in any way. in fact, I played it after the
Maryanne Amacher CD and found some of the more dense passages created some of
the same "third ear" feelings she creates, although not as intensely.
2) The Promise (Materiali Sonori), w/ Thurston Moore and Walter Prati. not
what you'd expect at all, this is a very subdued session, even atmospheric.
Moore is on his most understated behavior here, playing with his idol. Prati
plays electronics and a little bass. there's a multimedia track that I
haven't checked out yet. all in all, better than I expected.
3) one of the new releases on Emanem, Waterloo 1985, which is a 60 minute
live piece from the quartet of Parker, Paul Rutherford, Hans Schneider on
bass, and Paul Lytton. I have this but I haven't heard it yet.
4) last and most impressive in my book, Parker has a 13 minute piece on the
recent Ash International release, Al-Jabr. the concept here is that these are
remixes or reworkings of pieces by Joe Banks, who puts out recordings of
electromagnetic noise found in nature under the name Disinformation. as you
can imagine, this gave the remixers a lot of territory to work with, and the
seven tracks are all very individual, although they work together to form a
very coherent record. Parker's track is a beautifully quiet piece, and really
shows how far he's come with his work over the last few years improvising
with electronics. other artists with tracks include the ubiquitous Jim
O'Rourke, Simon Fisher-Turner, Lawrence Casserley, Tactile (the best track
I've found yet to show off my new subwoofer), Mechos, and T:un[k}] Systems.
ok, I just got to the last track of the Parker/Moore/Prati, and it's way
louder and harsher. but the bulk of it fits my description.

Subject: masada live cd / other tzadik release
hi y'all.
just a very quick "review" on the new masada live double cd on tzadik:
got my copy yesterday, and only had time to listen to it once. the
tracks are all (as far as i remember) known from the studio releases.
thankfully some of them are my fave masada tunes. what i like about the
cd is the fact that it is live, and that i get to hear different
versions/improvisations of/on the tracks i already knew. since i'm a fan
of joey baron it would be worth picking this cd up just for his solos.
and that's about it. (well, vs. the end of cd 1 there's also a nice jz
solo...)
i also got another new tzadik release. can't remember the artists name
or the title; it is the japanese woman who plays the koto. so you'll all
know which cd i mean. it is koto solo, and sounds great. the koto is one
of my most loved instruments, and she gets some great sounds out of it.
also a good sampling resource for weird-ish stuff. because of legal
reasons: for home use only, of course...

Yesterday I picked up the Parker-Prevost More Materiall 2-CD duo, which
is very impressive. Hearing it, it made me want to get other Parker
duets: Parker & Stevens and Parker & Lytton. But considering I also
bought the CT/Elvin/Redman CD and Spearman's Blues For Faasha at the
same time, I have to express some restraint with my dwindling $$$.
I was sorely tempeted by the Waterloo disc as well. So Jon please tell us
if it's as good as it would appear once you've listened to it. Be fair.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SECOND ANNUAL TRANSMISSIONS FESTIVAL TO OCCUR MAY 14th -15th.
We are all improvising together,
We register it, and the virtual effects are as present [real] as
the fingered notes. As are the implied rhythms. Our bodies are moving
and improvising with each other.
We are holding the pasts and futures within a possible always
present. Possible futures render themselves in the present. Continuously
and discontinuously, sound is about all of its possibilities. and this
improvisation is a writing.
Last year's Transmissions festival offered an examination of
multiple sonic and visual manifestations, and initiated new histories of
exploration. TRANS oo2 hopes to exhibit a more extensive variety of
improvised, experimental, drone, electro-acoustic, minimal and
non-traditional electronic sound at an intersection with other related
festival events, such as film/video screenings and installations. Trans
oo2 will occur May 14-15 1999 with performances at Cat's Cradle in
Carrboro, and other festival events spanning across Chapel Hill, Carrboro,
and Durham, NC.
Transmissions perfomances will feature performers from disparate
locales; Overseas composers: Rafael Toral [Portugal], bernhard guenter
[Germany], Kaffe Matthews [UK], Spaceheads [UK], New York and east coast
artists: Loren MazzaCane Connors, John Hudak, Phil Kline, Tono-Bungay,
Pelt, Cul de Sac [Boston], Mikroknytes [DC-area] - Midwest: TV Pow
[Chicago], Windy and Carl [Michigan], Cul De Sac, and local Zuerichten,
Fm:xpanse, Chuck Johnson: ensemble piece for 13 Guitars, Micro-East
Collective [14 Triangle-Area composer/performers with local alternative,
jazz, improvisational, traditional, and classical ensembles.], and the
John Randall Pelosi Quartet with Chris Stamey.
The festival is to include a series of audio and visual installations
grounded in a substantial concern with blurring the categorical boundaries
and parameters traditionally delineated by genre and exhibition space.
These pieces will utilize, among others, locations such as Carrboro Family
Vision, Street Scene, Carrburritos, Schoolkids Records, Meritt's, the Green
Room, Internationalist Books, Record Exchange, C.O.Copies., Partobject,
and also the Center for Documentary Studies.
The character of such installations extends - - from a
sound-collage documentation of the neighborhood and inhabited spaces of
and by students in the Media Arts Program of the Latin American Youth
Center [Washington, DC], which they have executed by themselves, - - to
and beyond, the installation of projects that Lisa Barnett, a graduate
student at NC State in design] has undertaken with a concern for exploring
the sound/image relationship [both histories and potentialities] in
non-linear multimedia.
National solicitations for film and video work that develops &
explores the inter-relationships between sound and image have provided the
source material for a number of screening sessions to occur at an
autonomous festival space, located at 103B W. Weaver St., Carrboro.
This space will function as a central location for information,
and will also enable interaction between festival participants and
attendees. Over the course of the weekend, the space will feature local
visual art in addition to installations and film and video screenings.
We are offering all-inclusive advance weekend passes for all of
the Cat's Cradle performances, film and video screenings, and
installations for $25. Single-day passes will be available at the door for
$15. We will not be able to offer passes to individual shows. Advance
passes are available (with Visa or Mastercard) from the Cat's Cradle at
919.967.9053.
A comprehensive website is being maintained at www.transmit.org,
and the festival mailing-list can be joined from the site. Contact
info@transmit.org, for information. Thanks for your support.

Subject: Re: IIO
The new IIO 2-CD set is quite good. And its additionally valuable
because it spotlights not only the whole Orchestra playing ,
but various sub groupings within it. They include a
reunion of Schiano-Schiffani's Groupo Romana Free Jazz, one of Italy's first
"free" groups; solo work from Carlo Actis Data; features for the brass
section and the reed section; some examples of Eugenio Colombo's
Rahsaan-like two reeds work; a piano-percussion dialogue etc.
I'm a little vague because I have to find the time to listen a lot more to
both discs (the problem of not being able to live a life of leisure).
However, I'm confident that with repeated listening, the "Festival" will
be as memorable as the IIO ECM disc I own.
