  63. Lori Freedman is a Canadian (Winnipeg, Man.-based, I think) 
  64. multi-reedist, who works in many "new music" contexts.

  66. Besides playing in more "classical" ensembles, she's part of at least two 
  67. bands I know of. They are the duo Queen Mab, with pianist Marilyn Lerner, 
  68. another Winnipeger and the Flying Bulger Klezmer band, based in Toronto 
  69. and led by trumpeter David Buchbinder. That band has a few records out 
  70. (none with Freedman yet, though), has existed for about a decade with 
  71. shifting personnel and now includes vocalist Dave Wall as well as Lerner, 
  72. Buchbinder, Freedman nd others.

  74. Now my cavet. The tracks from Queen Mab I've heard on the radio 
  75. were quite impressive and Freedman's work at the recent Time Flies Improv 
  76. Festival in Vancouver was praised in the March/April CODA, but my 
  77. persoanl experiece hasn't been that good.

  79. With great anticipation I looked forward to seeing Queen Mab at last 
  80. year's Festival International de Musique Actuelle in Victoriaville, Que., 
  81. but I was greatly disappointed. The two seemed disorganized and 
  82. practically amateurish and seemed to playing more *at* improvising than 
  83. improvising. Lerner especially seemed skittish and nervous. As a way to 
  84. stay "hip", I guess, they even played with some pre-recorded tapes at one 
  85. point, but it didn't sound any different than what was going on on stage.

  87. Technically they seemed OK, though, so maybe I just have to see/hear 
  88. Freedman in a different context.

  90. I'd love to be newly impressed and think the other way.

  131. CD, but did bring my opinions with me, anyway.

  133. I really enjoy this cd. It is mostly song structures, so I don't put it on a
  134. whole lot. But there are some freer bits, and even the music in the songs is
  135. great. It's not only AEC, but a group of 9 or 10 musicians, including Leo Smith
  136. and other AACM folk, and some names I don't know. The notes on the release I
  137. have are limited -- an interview with BF in French (that I can't read) and a
  138. list of musicians. They don't appear on all tracks, and the notes don't tell you
  139. who's playing where, but if you think of it as slightly subdued early AEC with a
  140. vocalist, you're on the right track. From what I've heard, she had a sort of
  141. Gainsborough hipster suaveness on some other records, but not enough to water
  142. down this one. If you want specifics on the musicians, I'll try to bring the
  143. disc to work and write again. Lemme know.(kurt_gottschalk@scni.com)

  287. The CD is called "Comme =D0=B0 la radio". It is indeed a collaboration be=
  288. tween
  289. Brigitte Fontaine, Areski (her long-time musical partner) and
  290. Art Ensemble of Chicago. AEC contribution, however, is very minimal,
  291. at least to these ears. Excepton is the title track, which is driven by
  292. Malachi Favors' bass and Jarman/Mitchel/Smith's respective
  293. oboe/flute/trumpet.
  294.  
  295. The rest of the album they tend to stay in the background.
  296. So if you are curious about this recording because of AEC contribution,
  297. there is really nothing to write home about. But it's an excellent
  298. introduction to Fontaine's ouevre; one of her best albums, in my opinion.
  299.  
  300. Forced Exposure catalogue calls her style of early 70s "acid-tinged avant
  301. folk". That's what they have to say about this particular recording:
  302. ""This was Fontaine's second album, from 1971, following Est.... Along wi=
  303. th
  304. her instrumentalist partner, Areski, she recorded the splendid L'Incendie
  305. album (reissued on Spalax) amongst others, and became one of the leading
  306. figures of the French chanteuse movement. A spellbinding vocalist with an
  307. intense, emotionally charged presence, she actually enlisted the Art
  308. Ensemble of Chicago to back her on half of this album, an amazing crossov=
  309. er
  310. that works quite well. The tracks w/o AEC delve into pure folk-rooted
  311. psychedelics however and are even better: "Lettre a Monsieur le Chef de G=

  313. de La Tour Carol" (for guitar, cello & percussion) is a genuine masterpie=

  315. of the era. Find out why Fontaine rates as one of Kim Gordon's 12 Goddess=

  498. Makigami Koichi is the leader of one of Japan's longest running
  499. underground bands, Hikasu, which has evolved from an electronic pop band
  500. to embrace world music, improvisation, noise and other styles. Makigami
  501. has recorded numerous albums in Japan(with Hikasu only, he released more
  502. than 20 full albums!), including his own, the star-studded,
  503. Zorn-produced "Koroshi No Blues", a much sought-after import on
  504. Toshiba-EMI Japan. In the U.S., he has two outstanding albums out from
  505. Tzadik ("Kuchinoha" & "Electric Eel") He has worked and collaborated
  506. with a great artists and musicians in a wide variety of areas and
  507. styles, such as Takahashi Yuji, John Zorn, Ikue Mori, Otomo Yoshihide,
  508. David Moss, Lauren Newton, Anthony Coleman, Umezu Kazutoki, Carl Stone,

  518. was mad. A century later, techno pop pioneer Koichi Makigami is making
  519. mad science of his own by connecting music to the effects it has on his

  521. carefully maintained its experimental and playful attitude toward the
  522. three minute pop song, combining quizzical details, mobile melodies,

  532. techno artists such as Ken Ishii and members of Denki Groove.

  543. bring some copies to sell when he performs in the u.s.)
  544. he said that the 'koroshi no blues' were sold out in japan & toshiba has
  545. currently no future plan to reprint it. he thinks when he releases
  546. something new from toshiba in future, they'd reprint it together with
  547. the new release. however, he doesn't know when.

  614. i'm attempting to research and write about the COBRA history/scene. i'm 
  615. inspired by the group here in cincinnati, have learned of a new seattle 
  616. cobra, know it used to happen in new york, know it still happens in tokyo, 
  617. and either happends or used to happen in san fan.
