Haven't heard it for years, but Michael Mantler's Movies was my
favourite album of 1980, or whenever i got it! I suppose it slipped
into my possession under jazz-rock auspices (Coryell, Bley, Swallow,
Williams) but I can't help but think of it fondly. Notice it wasn't
on the short list of Mantler releases posted on the last digest.

Hi Brian and Listmembers,Yeah, that was me who had a ***slight*** discussion with Fred Frith.
What was the problem: Well, I bought 'the precious evening' (on ReR) and found the disk a little bit 'arty
farty'. I posted this opnion on the fred frith - list, and got a tough answer back (check the archives if you
want to read what fred frith said.... some very harsh words were written).
Anyway, after listening to 'Pacifica' a few times, I still feel to same way: great well composed record, indeed
very mature, but I still don't get INTO the record.
But hey, since I am a political correct guy (according to ***someone***)... yeah, you're right, I haven't said
anything.....
Best wishes to everybody tough, hahahahahahaha

Anyone know where to find 3" recordable CDs?
Do they even exist?

I have another record by alterations, entitled 'Up Your Sleeve'. It is from
1980, consisting of live recordings, and yes, i think it is pretty good.
It may also still be available, as i only bought it about a year ago,
although it was in a clearance sale. (Quartz Publications, QUARTZ006).

Subject: Top 5 Zorns
Perhaps this will catch on...
Out of over 20 Zorn albums I find these to be the five I enjoy the best (in
no particular order):
JOHN ZORN: KRISTALLNACHT - IMHO, Zorn's most successful aproach on
improvised experimental. Full of feeling. Creepy. Scary. Passionate. I love
the way Ribot freaks out in the last tune while Winant seems to be learning
out to play, experimenting with various sounds in the drums. A must for
Zorniacs.
NAKED CITY: RADIO - While I love all Naked City material, including the
polemic "Absinthe", I have a special love for this one, specially because it
was the first time I ever heard John Zorn. I find this album to be a bit
more cohese than the first album, the songs being longer and "groovier". I
also like the way the album seems to build on intensity, growing from
my-parents-would-like-this jazz to stuff not unlike grind core.
JOHN ZORN: SPILLANE - Spillane features three tracks absolutely different
from each other, and I love each and everyone of them, specially, of course,
the title track. While I found "The Bribe" also enjoyable, the lack of
cohesion caused by Lindsay's text made it a little less enjoyable. Robert
Quine had a funny way of playing back then - his guitar always seems distant
and screechy. Does he still sound the same? "You kill ten guys and one of
them is bound to come back..." Wonderfull!
JOHN ZORN'S MASADA: SEVEN - Out of the three Masada quartet albums I know, I
like "Seven" the best. It features excellent work by all of the band. I
particularly like the way Greg Cohen seems to have a more active role, but
maybe that's just because of the wonderful "Otiot" tune. Masada is a great
quartet, featuring four of the greatest musicians in the world. It's too bad
that they decided to stop, but I think ten albums are a good imput.
JOHN ZORN: MUSIC FOR CHILDREN - this recent album is wonderful, being varied
and neatly performed. It gives out three Naked City tunes, an improvised
piece, a pice of Ribot and Cohen playing that would fit well in Circle Maker
or perhaps in the Anton, the Mailman film, some Coleman playing the celeste
and a long piece for wind machines. It's almost impossible that someone will
not like at least one of the songs in the album. Excellent!
This choice was difficult and may be different next week. But right now
these are my Top 5 Zorns. It just makes me wonder how could I leave out the
Filmworks, Bar Kokhba, The Big Gundown and such excellent albums.

Actually, Toby has nothing to do with the Collector's Club. He runs the Elephant
Talk fan mailing list. The Club is entirely run by Fripp via his record label
Discipline Global Mobile. They solicited fan input from Elephant Talk and the DGM
website guestbook as to what kinds of material the fans want to see, and they also
sent out a form to all paid subscribers asking what kinds of releases they'd like
(old KC boots reclaimed and remastered as well as unbooted live shows, which make
up the first few releases; recent live material that might be of too limited appeal
to put in the shops, including specific shows acclaimed by those who attended;
outtakes and demos, and material from the band's constituent members). But beyond
the advice solicited, the shots are called by Fripp and Fripp alone.
A $96 subscription entitles members to six bimonthly releases, shipped
automatically unless a subscriber indicates he or she doesn't want a certain
release, much like Columbia House in that regard. The first was a July 1969 show
available previously as a bootleg, cleaned up as much as possible and packaged with
photos, credits, notes, and royalties paid to the artists, plus a 15 minute bonus
track previously available in tape trading circles but not booted to my knowledge
(and I've got about three feet of shelf space devoted to Crim boots...).
A complete explanation of the club's workings can be viewed at
http://www.discipline.co.uk/news/news.htm
I have to say I'm awfully happy with the first club offering and with the scenario
in general... it always has bugged me to buy the boots since I know how opposed
Fripp is, but I confess I've bought them anyway. With Laswell and Zorn that issue
has not been a big one at all so far, to my knowledge. But I could see the club
scenario working for them, though I'd never considered it (especially for Zorn,
since he releases pretty much everything he wants to, and in overwhelming volume).
Speaking of Laswell, the long-awaited Panthalassa Remix CD-5 is on the Columbia
schedule for February. Five remixes of Panthalassa tracks, including one remix by
Laswell himself. I'm not on the Laswell list so you may already have heard this,
but it hasn't been previously posted on the Zornlist.
(Stefan, feel free to cross-post any of this you might find useful to your
discussion, if anything.)

Hi Steve, thanks for your reply. The collectors' idea for Laswell was launced on the
Laswell Mailing List some time ago, not on the Zornlist (sorry for the surprise,
hahahahahaha).
Yes you're right, zorn publishes practically everything, but, how about live recordings
(everybody knows the naked city live is COMPLETELY different than the studio naked city
albums). I think a (small) adience would be interested in this idea.
Concerning Laswell, Jeff Spirer mentioned on the laswell list that oz and robert musso
have 'a lot of live tapes'.
Anyway, i think there is an adience for this collectors' idea.
Best wishes,
Stefan

In that case, which label originally released the album? And who has the

soon)?

ESP, which was a small independent label, released the record in the
mid-'60s. zyx acquired the rights to the catalogue and began reissuing
the titles in the early '90s. their license lapsed recently and it's not
quite clear when new ESP reissues will appear on cd. get back has been
reissuing the stuff on vinyl, but like i said, the quality and legality
seem kind of dubious. hope that helps.

Speaking of audio quirks, I was listening to my copy of UNITY the other
day, and in the middle of "Ghosts (Second Variation)", there was a one
or two second 'beep'. Similar to weather warning beeps that intrude on
an otherwise uneventful evening of television. Does anyone else's
ESP-CD copy have this phenomenon?
And somewhere, I read that the original vinyl copy came with a hidden
booklet of poems or other comentary by the session's engineer, Mr. Paul
Haines.
Did anyone here know that Lennie Tristano engineered some his own
sessions? Pretty impressive.

Ayler - ESP Disk. All his in-print ESP-Disk and Impulse CDs are worth a
listen.
Bitches - only have the original 2-LP set. But the reviews I've read
suggest that the "complete" version adds all type of extraneous material
that detracts from the original.

FWIW, the recent ESP versions are probably still in stores. I picked up my
