I just bought Zorn's new album "the Bribe" and felt a quick review maybe
in order. The album is inspired in-part by the Spillane recordgin he
did in the late '80's. Although the musicians have changed somewhat,
the continuity is clear. Zorn himself has never sounded better on the
sax. Robert Quine is so-so but everyone else shines brightly. Horvitz
and Coleman slice and dice just as you might imagine. I suppose what
I'm trying to say is that while it's not my favorite Zorn album, it's
certainly one to aquire.

Subject: Zony Mash
The new Zony Mash features a band that has had a chance to develope
their unique sound. While a lot like the "Cold Spell" in sound, the
songs have been fine tuned -- probably due to all that touring they've
been up to. Horvitz is especially thoughtful and brilliant as one can
expect. I'm still not sure that I like the album as much as "Cold
Spell" but I will NOT say anything derogatory about it! A must for any
Horvitz nut. The only weak spot is sometimes timothy young doesn't
impress me as a guitarist. You can hear a few clips at cdnow, com or
check out the Zony Mash website at www.zonymash.com

Fellow Zorn list members,
If anyone is interested, I've just acquired pretty much the entire Telarc CD
catalog. I have most of the jazz titles listed, but haven't started the
classical yet. Feel free to ask for a listof the jazz titles, and if there are
any specific classical titles you want, I'll try to find them. This time
around, $7.00 per disc or 4 for $25.00 plus minimal postage; and other than
being promo embossed discs, they're all immaculate on the CD and packaging.
I've got quite a project here and need your help! :-)
Thanks,
Dale.

I've been listening to the new Zony Mash a lot lately, and I absolutely concur
with this. Young frequently sounds confused or lost in these tunes....I
thought I might have been missing something, but apparently not. To my ears,
the band in general is a lot more telepathic and experimental.....there's much
more outside experimentation and adventurousness this time around. And
generally, I like it much more then the first one. Much more Horvitz, much
less Meters.

Anyone heard Hanrahan's 'Shadow Nights 1' yet, recently released by
Justin Time/American Clave? Much as I like his work (especially the
mid to late 80's things), I'm beginning to get the suspicion that
lately he's simply been draining the vaults. Wondering how long Don
Pullen's going to continue appearing on KH's issues.

Does anybody know when this deal started (Justin Time reissuing American
Clave)? Also, is SHADOW NIGHTS 1 a reissue? I just have the memory of
something with a similar title issued a few years ago.
Also, besides VERTICAL'S CURRENCY, is there any other reissue availalble/

Hi,
I'm curious to hear about Ackley's "straight-ahead" disc. Not that the
ROVA boys don't have roots, but how close to the mainstream does this one
get? Are they Ackley's tunes or rep tunes?
Also, does anyone have any info on Brandon Ross' group Harriet Tubman? I
know the lineup, but can someone describe the sound, aims, etc. if
possible?
Thanks,

I liked this one too. I thought the vocals reminded me of Threadgill's
_Carry the Day_ and even Frank Zappa. I was also wondering who else did
this kind of thing. The singer on Connah's CD still has a limited role,
no improvising or anything.

It's puzzling, to say the least.
The liner notes are mostly illegible... overprinted metallic ink on a
script font.
Some of the musicians pictured in the booklet, like Cindy Blackman,
don't appear on any of the tracks.
Also strange is the fact that there are track-by-track listings for 13
pieces, but the CD player says there are 16 tracks. Needless to say,
it's a little difficult to follow what's what.
It sounds like Pullen's on five tracks.
The pieces were recorded between '94 and '96.
How's it sound? Interesting, especially the Pullen tracks, though I find
the 'story line' (basically The Arabian Nights superimposed on The
Bronx... shades of that recent film version of Romeo & Juliet in Miami)
impossible to comprehend. Perhaps you have to hear all 10 volumes!!!
As to Patrice's question... Justin Time will release four American Clave
recordings, including a new recording by Deep Rumba.

Hey,
I've just picked up O'Rourke's "Happy Days," and it's a right swell
release, but after terminal pharmacy I was hopeing for some
more-or-less straight guitar work along the lines of his track on
the Meme compilation, or "Happy Days" up til the 12-ish minute mark.
Any suggestions...?
Also I recently picked up the "mirror..." ep by Gastr Del Sol,
and the music is interesting but the lyrics seem pretty silly and
contrived, and they lose me fast.. How do their other releases
compair? How's the new disc?
I was also wondering how the new Ribot record, "...the prosthetic cubans"
is...or where to start with the lad generally...
And thank you.

Dear Zornlisters,
Just letting you all know there is a fine belgian label, called Lowlands
that put out an interesting CD.
It is called Fear no Fall, and it is a sort of supergroup. It features
Jim O'rourke, Zeena Parkins, Toshinori Kondo, David Shea, DJ Low and
Dirk Wachtelaer.
No compositions, mere improvisation. But hey, don't expect uncontrolled
noise, no all these people seem to understand each other very well.
Defenitely check out track 3, a duet between Shea and O'Rourke...
subtle, even quite romantic playing going on around here.
The label is Lowlands, and they can be reached at:

They were a hardcore punk band from Japan
(early '80s?). I've only seen their recordings
once, and that was in the massive MaximumRockNRoll
archive in S.F. I imagine, real hard to find.
hmmm...I now have a faint memory of a compilation
LP that they are on...I'll have to ask around.

MRR has basically kept a library of everything they've received.
They have more 7"s then you can even imagine existing and of
course in their archive is exceptionally rare stuff. If you
ever see a 12"/7" cover that's been taped along the 3 closed
sides with wide green tape, you'll know it's probably been stolen
from MRR (it happens occasionally).
And since this is the closest this list will ever get to punk/
hardcore & MRR, I'm going to take advantage of this moment to
mention that I'm doing Book Your Own Fuckin' Life for 1999. If
you're involved with anything punk/hardcore related (radio,
label, store, distro, club, etc), get on over to http://www.byofl.org/
to submit an entry for the print guide and searchable web site.
Deadline is Feb 1 to make it into the print guide; of course the
web site will be perpetually ongoing. Spread the word to any
appropriate friends (instructions on how to submit if you don't
have web access are on the back cover of MRR).

"Temporarily delayed" said the US publicist for Justin Time when I asked several
weeks ago (i.e., the moment after I saw the ad in the last Down Beat). I'll try
to get better info... I'm as interested as anybody. "Desire Develops an Edge"
is one of my all-time favorite records, and "Vertical's Currency" ain't far
behind.
Be that as it may, I do share Brian Olewnick's view that it seems like a long,
long time since we've heard anything truly new from Kip. But it's my
understanding that the licensing deals with Nonesuch (see below if this is news)
and Justin Time were made more or less expressly so that Kip could continue to
make new recordings -- apparently he's even never come close to making money on
any of his critically acclaimed and presumably increasingly expensive projects,
and most likely Astor Piazzolla was the only relative bestseller in the American
Clave label's history.
BTW it may already be common knowledge, but for anyone who hasn't heard, the
license for the great trilogy of Piazzolla discs on American Clave (including
his all-time best single disc representation, "Tango Zero Hour"), previously
held by Rounder, has been picked up by Nonesuch, at least in the US. I believe
their version of "Tango Zero Hour" may already be on the market.

Not true, actually. Tim Yo was (sadly, he passed
away this past spring) famous for periodically
culling the archive and selling it to local
record stores. We've bought many an MRR cast
off that wasn't "punk enough," but was an
excellent addition to the radio station
library I maintain. When Tim knew that he was
dying, he was particularly ruthless in his
purging the library. The feeding frenzy at
Amoeba and Epicenter was entertaining and fun.
