The band on Rounder is Zlatne Uste, a very fun band (especially for
dancing!) -- but they're an American band, playing Slavic brass band
music. I just spent a week with 'em, and lemme tell you, they've got a
great groove.
If anyone's interested in trading tapes of this stuff, write me
personally. I have some Izvorno tapes (mostly Pece's ensembles), some
zurla/tapan, and some excellent collections of regional music. Also have
a bunch of Bulgarian stuff.

There is a new release by Breuker/Kollektief called KURT WEILL. About two
thirds of it is new material, recorded in 1997. There is a vocalist named
Loes Luca on about 1/2 of the new material. The rest of it compiles
mateial from various BVHaast albums, and a track from the About Time record.
I just got it a couple of days ago, haven't had a chance to listen yet, so
can't comment.
On another note, Herb Levy sent around a message about his show on the
Antennaradio site. Everyone should check this site out! I first tuned in a
couple of months ago for an all Braxton show. Great variety of music that
you won't hear many other places. Last week's jazz show played one half of
the hard to find Evan Parker album The Snake Decides.

Yup,
Sorry to spam but I warned ya in the subject !!
I currently reside in Bothell, Seattle for 2 weeks. Anyone any
suggestions on what to do at night ? (I currently cruise the highway) I
saw a Buckethead announcement in the Seattle newspaper on August 6th. I
will also attend the Womad fest this weekend check out Ravi Shankar
again !!!!
I also need GOOD record stores and I mean vinyl. Already checked out
Tower records in Redmond and got a little bit frustrated with the
prices. (Thought US was a lot cheaper than Belgium ... at least it was
10 years ago)
And again, sorry to spam for the curious non-Seattlers

Get the Lotte Lenya recordings! It's amazing. Might as well as go to the
source. But Weill was such a brilliant composer, you can't go wrong with
the man no matter who has done the recording. But Lenya (the wife of
Weill) was an wonderful artist - and I believe the Columbia release is
still in print. Part of it is recordings from the Brecht era, and the rest
is Broadway material. Fantastic recordings.

I'd recommend checking out Anastasia's BEFORE THE RAIN.
It4s the soundtrack of the amazing movie BEFORE THE RAIN (Po Dezju)
directed by Milcho Manchevski.
IMHO, the score's great but the movie is overwhelming.
Rather close to this vein you can also try Muzsikas and Marta Sebestyen
MORNING STAR (Hannibal). These are folk musics and exotic tunes from the
Hungarian group Muzsikas and vocalist Marta Sebestyen (btw, Marta was
heard in the movie THE ENGLISH PATIENT); there's joy and sadness in this
music with fervent fiddling over nice syncopated bass tones from Daniel
Hamar.
Sebestyen's voice bears a resemblance to Oriental modes; it's absolutely
worth checking out!

Actually, Jeff Spirer wrote that about Chris Blackwell. And the RykoDisc
deal has been in the works, there were some connections there before he
left Polygram. Note that Ryko owns Black Arc, a Laswell label.

Two friends of mine swear by (not "at" by) the Bebop book. It's supposed
to be the definitive study.
The Porter book is also the definite study of Trane, easily surpassing
the so-called bios that went before.
However if you're a non-musician like myself be prepared for literally
pages of musical transcription, though they don't really slow down the
pace of the story,
And, of course, as I've posted before, I'm still waiting for the book that
would extend the history of "free jazz" from Val Wilmer's "As Serious as
Your Life" to today. Marzette Watts just died, so there goes another
first hand source for the story. If it waits long enough, *everyone* will
be gone and anything we get will be Buddy Bolden-style hearsay,

DeVeaux's book, IMHO, sets a new standard for jazz history. He looks at the
birth of bebop from all angles: social, cultural, and musical. It is very
readable and I don't think that will be put off by the musical examples that
he uses, speaking as one with only a rudimentary grasp of musical theory.

I'm feeling very lucky. Portugal is usually a country where nothing
musically interesting ever happens but, this year it's full of surprises.
One question though: I have the opportunity to see Ikue Mori, Marc Ribot,
Anthony Coleman, Arto Lindsay, some person named Kang and something named
Oval all together. Questions: Who is Kang and Oval? Has anyone ever heard
this set? If so, how good is it?
To anyone who might be in Portugal, maybe for the expo '98 or something,
here are some interesting concerts:
Bill Laswell's Sacred System - 1 Aug
Mori, Coleman, Ribot, Lindsay, Kang, Oval - 8 Aug
Nuno Rebelo - 9, 10 Aug
Arto Lindsay - 22 Aug
Elliott Sharp & Zeena Parkins 1 Oct
Derek Bailey & Albert Mangelsdorff 2 Oct
Hugh Davies & Evan Parker 3 Oct
There's more, but most you probably don't recognize (there are quite a few
portuguese artists) or aren't interested. However, if you're coming to
Portugal and would like to know more about other artists' performances, mail
me personally, and I'd be happy to enlighten you on that matter.
Thank you for your patience.

The inclusion of Oval is unusual, to say the least. Oval is a group
(sometimes of size one) who specializes in distorted digital sounds.
A recent review of their live performances in the states indicated
that you could put on their CD, look at the back of your monitor, and
stay home. Everybody else here looks good. Ervind Kang is a crazy
violinist who's been (favorably) discussed on this list before.
All of the concerts you list look very interesting and worth checking
out.
