I didn't know it was a KnitMedia product. What's the deal? I've
been browsing the site for almost a month now--I showed it to a friend
of mine last Friday--and now I can't access it. "You don't have
permission to access /incus/ on this server," it says.
Anyway, they misspelled "Bennink" on the Company 6&7 page.
Can anyone tell me why I shouldn't dismiss the No Neck Blues Band?
I saw them last night and they were horrible--I don't mind if people
choose to not learn how to play their instruments in the accepted way,
but if you're going to bang pots and pans whilst chanting tunelessly
and/or squeaking randomly on a clarinet, you'd better have a high
level of inspiration to carry you through. At best, these kids
sounded like a poor imitation of whatever Can tune bores you the most.
At worst, which was most of the time, they reminded me of the stuff
I used to see during my ill-spent youth in the parking lots after
Phish shows. Their "support," a duo (?) called Egypt, was even worse.
A drunk guy babbling into a microphone while a shirtless, dreadlocked
man futilely wailed and banged on a guitar. Maybe I've just reached
the limits of what I can comprehend--I should, like, you know, OPEN
MY MIND, and stuff, you know, man.
The most interesting part was when a large quantity of (apparently
fake) blood appeared on the floor and in the bathroom.

Sort of like the lambada?
And another thing....how come there's always so many problems

I saw the Masada band here in Seattle. Once. A few years ago. It was well
attended, but I don't know how many shows like that the local scene can
support. There IS a Downtown West scene here, and it's pretty lively. I'd
like to see at least a few more tours come around!

What version of IN C did you get? Because the recent one (on New Albion) is
fantastic! It stretches much longer (70mn?), something that the vinyl format
did not allow. To the point that both versions are mandatory.
I totally agree with DRUMMING. It is mind-boggling that such an (apparently)
austere and long composition like that can keep you attention focused. I
guess it did not age because it is beyond time and fashion (and, sadly, without
really followers, but this is also the case for Varese and Messiaen).

Hi all,
I noticed awhile back that on the Painkiller box there is an image of a
priest hung in a graveyard and zombies walking around. For you information,
this image was taken from the awe-inspiring Italian horror film Gates Of
Hell, also known as City Of The Living Dead. Neat film.
Also, does anybody know if Geva Geva (the band consisting of KK Null and
Yamatanka Eye with which John first jammed) has any recorded material? I'm
a huge Zeni Geva fan (great band BTW), and would love to hear Zorn jam with
Null.
Last prodding inquiry, I promise, is the show Zorn did with Thurston Moore
in New York at the Knitting Factory a few years back. Is there any footage
or recordings of this? It's gotta kick ass.
Glad to be here,
Ev.

Just saw the 2nd set of Zorn's impromptu appearance with Anthony Coleman's
Sephardic Tinge which was pretty great -- some Coleman tunes, some Masada
tunes and a wild jam that veered into Parker's "My Little Suede Shoes"
and (briefly) Ayler's 'Ghosts'.

Yes, it is a nice performance.
But although Wolessen playing is very nice, i can't stop thinking that
this band sounds better with JB. He's a very special drummer... There is
a lot of good ones, but only a few - i think about Tony Williams, Joey
Baron, Bill Bruford, Paul Motian (there's surely more of them, tose are
just my types) that really have something very special.
I had the very same impression when listening to Dave Douglas Quartet
recently, with Ben Perowsky. He was excellent, but i missed Joey (i
didn't know the lineup of the quartet until the day before the show).
BTW, i talked to Dave then and he told me that Masada is going to play a
gig at an austrian festival in august. Anybody has any info about it?

IMHO, while the New Albion recording is fine (and does obviate the
need to turn over the platter!), it lacks a certain "bite" that the
original has. Perhaps it has something to do with the sense of newness
and excitement that, presumably, the early performers had. But both
are well worth hearing and, again IMHO, it's the best thing Riley ever
produced.
>I also dug out my vinyl copy of Drumming, although I understand that

Contrary to what I wrote above, I actually like the Nonesuch
version (1987) a little better than the original DG one, though
both are incredible. I haven't heard the new one that, I think,
just came out (Nonesuch?).
