Dear Zornies,
I just read the new booklet of the Vooruit Arts Centre (Ghent, Belgium,
Europe), and I was amazed by a forthcoming concert. Mike Patton in
concert with Han Bennink.
So my question is: has someone ever heard any recordings, saw some
concerts by these two guys??? Is it amazing or is Mike Patton trying
(not succeeding though) to imitate Zorn again.....

I don't recall Mike Patton ever trying to immitate Zorn. Or has he picked
up playing the saxophone lately?
You could say Patton is trying to immitate Hanatarash, maybe, but Zorn?!

I do agree. I guess they sound academic and kind of dark, except for
"Lanette" (track 4) where the trio opens the song playing percussion on
the bodies of their instruments, passes through a Caribbean melody and
closes with a series of playful quotes by Feldman.
IMO, I think it's a pity they didn't follow Lanette's tone on the rest
of the cd.

I recently heard about this album called "Closed On Account Of Rabies" by
various artists which is supposed to be musical interpretations and
recitations of Poe's poems and stories. It has good artists such as Marc
Ribot and Diamanda Galas, but also strange names such as Iggy Pop and
Cristopher Walken (the actor?). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has heard
this album, and how do they recommend it...
Thanks

oh yes he does...i never heard anything sounding so much like Zorn as Mike
Patton`s pranzo oltranzista album....
i think as a composer Mike Patton is rather weak. if you listen to the
stuff he wrote for the last Faith No More album..these are the weakest
tracks on the album..also the main track he wrote for Mr. Bungle`s Disco
Volante..Violenza domestica is musically very primitive although it is a
great track...
a think Patton did his best work when he sings/screams on other people`s
compositions

when zorn did the bacharch tribute album mike patton sang a bacharch song

patton does a t.rex cover with fantomas....

Hi,
I saw The Grassy Knoll show at Warsaw Summer Jazz Days and I don't agree
with Artur (pozdrawiam).
Deepy drum & bass sounds with many samples and Davis oriented trumpet.
Maybe compositions were too similar each other but I really enjoyed the
concert.
I didn't hear The Grassy Knoll studio releases before and now I'd like to.

I have listened to Grassy Knoll I and I enjoyed it a lot, though I
already have to try with II and III.
If you want a heavy beat, Chicago's Liquid Soul has caught fire and
their second recent "Make some noise" (ARK21- 1998) is very funky with
powerful horns. There you can listen to the great Mars Williams on
tenor, alto and soprano sax; Ron Haynes, trumpet, flugelhorn; John
Janowiak, trombone; Tommy Sanchez, guitar; Ricky Showalter, bass; Dan
Leali, drums; Frank Hill & Chris Cameron, keyboards (on different
tracks); Jesse de la Pena, turntables; Dirty M.F., rap.
I bet you that Kurt Elling's scat vocal on "Salt Peanuts" (track 3) and
"Ramblin'" (from O. Coleman's songbook -track 8) will really dig into
you.
Also try their first outing "Liquid Soul" (Soul What Records, according
to my copy).
By the way, is there any recommendation on Brooklyn Funk Essentials?
Should I buy it?
Thanks in advance.

Regarding an information about the cancellation of the experimental music
series in Buenos Aires, Argentina, called Experimenta 98, taken=20
from La Nacion, newspaper, june 7, we suggest to see the=20
article published for Clarin, other argentinian newspaper,=20
that have address on line:=20

and then maybe you could understand (probably not) that Experimenta=20
still didn't died and maybe could have a new agreement with the=20
authorities of the City of Buenos Aires in the next days.=20
Probably with a violent reduction of the budget but
with the hope of don't lose this important space for the=20
new music.
Below you have the letter that were signed for many artists in Argentina=20
and other places asking the authorities for maintain the conditions for=20
Experimenta continue working.

CK
EXPERIMENTA DOESN'T SLEEP
We, the undersigned Argentine and foreign artists, turn to the public
opinion and to the authorities elected by the Argentine people in order t=
o
inform you of a situation we consider to be of utmost importance.=20
In 1997, a cycle called Experimenta 97 was created which included concert=
s
and workshops whose purpose was to promote music presently being produced
in the entire world in the experimental field. These events were carried
out with the presence of prominent artists from abroad who were able to
exchange experiences with Argentine musicians interested in generating ne=
w
ideas. This is a research and experimentation process which every country
promotes. It contributes to the cultural sign of the times and enriches
culture in all of its areas. This was undoubtedly understood by the Bueno=
s
Aires city authorities, whose officials in the culture department support=
ed
the cycle financially and later benefited from the acclaim. At the end of
last year, the same officials spoke of success and committed themselves t=
o
sponsoring, including through the media, the cycle's continuation in 1998.
This is how its artistic director, Claudio Koremblit, began work on the n=
ew
program and secured the commitments of all the artists that are included =
in
the Experimenta 98 cycle with the blessing of the city authorities. In Ma=
y,
when many of us were working on the new program, we began to fear that th=
e
commitments made by the Secretary of Culture of the city of Buenos Aires
and it representatives in the Alvear Theater could be altered. We now kno=
w
that there is a strange word circulating among the people in charge of
carrying it out: the cycle is "un-financed."=20
In a country where the people profoundly distrusts the system that
legislates them, where the economic situation is critical, where words me=
an
nothing, where people do not believe in justice, it would seem that the
situation of an anvanguard cycle and its possible disappearance as if it
had never existed would be something totally irrelevant. Nevertheless, we
believe that it is another blow that is added to all the other blows our
culture has to withstand every day; and that presents us as a country
manipulated by the whims and political necessities of its leaders. In
addition, Experimenta makes contributions in an area which has always bee=
n
rather thrashed and iscriminated against. It is an area which contributes
much by its mere existence, because it is open and unprejudiced, somethin=
g
which our empoverished culture needs as much as it does air in order to
exist. To make something die of hunger that is considered successful and
important is an obscurantist attitude that generates backwardness,
confusion and disbelief. We believe that it is of vital importance that t=
he
authorities reconsider this attitude, and at the same time call upon the
public opinion and artists to join and defend something that we must all
defend: the right to be informed and respected. We must sustain the place
we have won with much effort and which we undoubtedly deserve.

Subject: Joe Lovano and Motian/Lovano/Frisell
Concerning the trio, I think nobody mentioned the two "On Broadway" discs
on JMT. They play standards on it exclusively, and they do it in a way that
justifies to rerecord pieces recorded hundreds of times, IMO. Especially
the ballads with floating time really touch me, for example "It might as
well be spring" on the first one. All three contribute to the band sound in
an exciting and unusual way, especially Motian and Frisell.
Talking about Lovano, I would say that in general he is better as sideman
than as a leader. I have heard one record, don't remember the name, with a
rather large setup (among them a female singer) which doesn't work at all,
and I find his Sinatra-tribute quite overestimated by the press. Although
being rather mainstream for this list, I would recommend the Scofield
albums with Lovano, Bill Steward and Larry Goldings - not too far out, but
serious masters at work, if you ask me.
Any opinions?

Speaking of Sco, I recently picked up his new one with MMW as his sidecrew. I
had read some good reviews, but honestly, I was wary about the purchase, it
being King Wank and all. But this album took me by complete surprise. It rocks!
Evenm though it's all Sco tunes, it fits very nicely into the MMW discography.
Far, far better than anything Booker T's done in the last twenty years...
