I'm thinking of going to see Roseman at Tonic on Friday, but I've no
idea what his own music is like. I've heard him twice, once with Ellery
Eskelin and Joey Baron, where he was excellent and last week in
Threadgill's ensemble where he was, IMHO, so-so. Can anyone fill me in
as to his own band?

Is anyone on the list at all familiar with posting RealAudio tracks to
the Web? I've been trying to post a couple to my site, but when I go to
test them with my browser, they won't stream. Instead my computer will
download the entire file first, as if it was a .wav or something. It's
not my browser- it streams Real media just fine off of anyone else's
site. I'm using Frontpage 97 for Web design. Anyone have any ideas?

From doing the rer site (http://www.panix.com/~zampino/rer/) I've picked up
a small amount of info about the distributor Locus Solus from Kenichi
Kitamura, a RIO/rer fan. Locus Solus is not actually a part of
Recommended Records, but does distribute their records in Japan:

Locus Solus invited Charles Heyward,Nick Didkovski,Amy Denio to Japan.

Actually, I love the Valis CD. These tracks are so wonderfully fucked up,
from DXT's painful scratching on "Bullit In The Head" to We's strange
oscillations on "Quark Soup", AF's messing up of "Osaka Bondage" on "Peace
Akhi", Spectre's gangster-style "Backstab", the bad FM reception beginning
of Corporal Blossom's "Senseless Humor", Torture's rap-on-dope "Play To Win"
and the wall of noise of DJ Spooky's "Nasty Data Burst". I also found the
liner notes quite interesting. By the way, Corporal Blossom is actually
sound engineer Layng Martine (one of Laswell's associates).
Kind regards,
- Chris.

Picked this up myself and I agree with each point Mr. Olewnick makes above.
Not a spectacular collaboration, not primo-Bailey and less interesting than
Min's Asphodel release, "Spring, River, Flower, Moon, Night". In fact what
"Viper" is very strongly reminiscent of is the disc of duet improvisations
that Jin Hi Kim (Komungo, Korean stringed instrument) put out on
Nonsequitur/What Next? in 1993, pairing up with the likes of Bailey, Reichel,
Sharp, Kaiser, Chadbourne... (And the Nonsequitur release is better for the
varied line-up.)
A recent release that shows a much better collaboration is the new disc
"Incubation" by Musica Transonic with Keiji Haino on PSF. On this disc they
put together a nice mixture of Musica Transonic's volume and Keiji Haino's
unique vocals and guitar.

I'm no expert but I think this has something to do with whether your ISP
runs a RealAudio server or not. You can probably find tips at the
RealAudio website, but that's what the problem sounds like to me. I've not
yet started offering RealAudio on my site yet, but it's definitely in the
works.

Dave Douglas, Cuong Vu, Roy Campbell, trumpets; Drew Gress, bass; Susie

Content will be free jazz and possibly some Rahsaan Roland Kirk covers.
Someone tell me about it, as I'm forced to be elsewhere that evening...

Our site has RealAudio, but for streaming, it requires an extra fee to our
ISP. Since we use such short excerpts (c. a minute or so), the download
time is only about ten seconds. I know that a lot of ISPs offer free
streaming, though. Follow the suggestion of checking out the RealAudio
site, and send an email to your ISP asking about their services.

This one is out in Europe for quite some time and is quite enjoyable:
Uri Caine: Wagner E Venezia
This record features more straightforward chamber-music translations
of the most famous ouvertures by Wagner.
The orchestra includes Eric Friedlander on Cello, Mark Feldman
violin,Uri Caine piano (and also Italian accordeon-player, a second
violin-player whose name I forgot and I think,
Drew Gress on bass, not sure)
It is a live-performance at the St.Marco-place in Venice
and has a lot of background-noise (people talking, the clocktower
chiming at the end of one of the pieces). At first this sounds very
disturbing but then it starts to contribute to live-atmosphere in a
rather strange way.
If you didn't like Wagner because it was way too bombastic,
maybe you check out this!

The VERY BEST Booker Little album is the last one he made, just a
month or two before his tragically early death: it has been released
as Victory And Sorrow and as Looking Ahead, but has just re-appeared
on CD as Booker Little And Friend, on Bethlehem, with two alternate
takes of the piece titled (on this issue) Molotone Music (tho'
they're incorrectly listed as alternates of Matilde), tho' previously
titled Looking Ahead, and referred to by the producer or engineer as
"X" (!) ...
It continues the sextet format of Out Front, and although
Dolphy and Roach are absent, I think the music is better
realised ... it was these two albums which Douglas drew upon
for In Our Lifetime
Also very much worth hearing is the music from the Five Spot with
Dolphy & Co. He made quite a few albums with Max Roach ... but
the late (for Little) Percussion Bitter Sweet is the best one I know
My first exposure to Uri Caine was the Douglas album, but I can't
recommend him enough: preceding Toys on JMT was Sphere Music
(1992 trio and quartet/quintet with Don Byron, Gary Thomas, Graham
Haynes), which is well up to scratch ...
Finally, does anyone know of a Ron Carter trio album with Hancock and
Cobham??

To get Real Audio to stream from a http server without the extra cgi
charges:
First(a bit obvious, I know) upload the mysong.ra file
then create a generic text document containing only the following text:
http://Your.site.address/yoursong.ra
Name this text file: yoursong.ram
upload the text file to your server
the link on your web page should refer to the text file
when someone clicks on the link to the text file
the text file will call up the .ra file which should then stream.
This is how I did the page at
http://pages.cthome.net/richwilliams/Soundfiles.html
Hope this helps

This will not be available in the US for some time, as W & W has just
started their association with Allegro. The schedule looks like two or
three releases a month. However, a few lucky Philadelphians may be the
fortunate ones to get their hands on a copy. Uri will be signing the
Mahler disk on June 24 at Classical Choice, 122 S 21st St, and promised
to have a few copies of the Wagner on hand. For those of you that know
Uri, you will quickly recognize the Wagner as a sendup of the music,
respectful but playful.

i wasn't blown away by _viper_ but it's definitely a nice disc.
excellent recording quality. i would say that bailey adopts an asian
bent as much as i think min xiao fen tries to sound like bailey. my initial
impression was how complementary the instruments and playing styles
sound, especially how easily bailey's glass-like harmonics fit into the
eastern folk tradition. not *the* definitive bailey recording, but a very
cool addition to his discography.

I've been curious about this album myself. I have a couple of the
earlier Musica Transonic releases (I don't recall the titles or wasn't
able to translate the Greek!) and, while exciting in at least a
surface sense, they left me unsatisfied. I've had a similar reaction
with some other bands in this genre (High Rise, Vajra) which, IMHO,
lack the depth achieved by Fushitsusha in, say, 'Pathetique'. Love to
hear more details on 'Incubation' (Admittedly, a little bit of Haino's
vocal stylings go a long way with me).
There's a solo bass album on PSF by someone whose name, damn it,
escapes me at the moment--begins with 'M'--that I've heard great
things about. If anyone, miraculously, can figure out which release
I'm referring to and can provide a review, please do.

Brian I think the artist you refer to is Motohara Yoshizawa .
I agree that Musica Transonic and High Rise are probably not as
'deep' as Fushitsusha but I certainly wouldn't want to be without them.
I find all the PSF MT albums to be exhiliratingly OTT in a kind of
everyone-falls-down-the-stairs kind of way. Perhaps they make more sense
if you've seen them live. I caught them a couple of years back and they
were blistering. Imagine Naked City stripped down to just guitar, bass
and drums and then have them all play flat out all the time. Righteous.
I can't comment on much of High Rise but I'd certainly recommend
their live album to anyone who needs to do some wallpaper stripping in a
hurry!!

Frank). A great novelist that will be dearly missed. Always amazed
