  74.      As someone who's been listening to Sharp since ISM in the early 80's 
  75.      but who has tired of his recorded output in recent years, I'd be 
  76.      interested to hear some z-listers' recommendations of his best recent 
  77.      work.

  79.      For some context, I think he peaked with the extraordinary LARYNX on 
  80.      SST. I also enjoyed earlier work like CARBON (Zoar) and FRACTAL 
  81.      (Dossier) as well as the relatively recent TERRAPLANE. Often I find 
  82.      his ideas more interesting than the realization (MARCO POLO'S ARGALI, 
  83.      TWISTMAP) and sometimes I think the projects simply fail (K!L!A!V!, 
  84.      and tripe like the adolescent--at best--IN THE LAND OF THE YAHOOS). 
  85.      So, given all this, which releases from the last five years or so do 
  86.      you think this crabby listener would enjoy?

  286. Hi all
  287.    Just got back from a wonderful few days in Victoriaviile.  It was my
  288. first time in the area and at the festival.  Gorgeous part of Quebec and
  289. a first rate fest.  The 2 Zorn performances were a highlight among many
  290. excellent shows.  The saturday evening was billed as "Modern Chamber
  291. Music".  Feldman, Friedlander, Anthony Coleman (subbing for David Shea),
  292. William Winant along with another percussionist and keyboardist whose
  293. names I didnt catch.  The centerpiece of the performance was Duras,
  294. which was performed in it's entirity in the second half of the show.
  295. The first portion consisted of 3 pieces, Etant Donnes, something called
  296. Music for Children I think and a drum duet.  The drum piece was
  297. interesting in that the volume of William's drum was such that it verged
  298. on feeding back quite often.  Zorn was at the back by the soundboard for
  299. this piece and was clearly manipulating the volume and toying with the
  300. feedback.  Duras was magnificent and IMHO, the most successful piece of
  301. the night.
  302.     Zorn/Patton/Mori was fantastic as well.  Zorn's sax playing was
  303. otherworldly and his five-minute-straight-circular-breathing was a joy
  304. to witness !!!
  305.     Too many other highlights to get into, but overall the festival
  306. seemed really well attended and superbly executed.
  307.     Finally, anyone interested in trading live tapes, get in touch !!
  308. Id love to hear more
  309. of this sort of music in a live setting !!!

  357. Probably so.  Other than the fact that both involve taking sounds produced
  358. by other people and recontextualizing them, the work on _Records_ doesn't
  359. have much in common with _Plexure_.  Marclay seems more interested in the
  360. physicality of his records, layering of sounds, more straightforward
  361. rhythmic devices, and real-time performance than Oswald does (on these
  362. records).  I think they're both great, but totally different.

  387. Tetreault's set was one of the highlights of this past weekend's Victoriaville
  388. festival. His piece consisted of taking three plastic turntables and using the
  389. needles on the platters themselves, as well as inside the turntables. He had a
  390. ton of different techniques and ideas and put together a really coherent set.
  391.  
  392. Tetreault has 4 CDs avialble, to the best of my knowledge. The first is a
  393. record released on Ambiances Magnetiques in 1990, which I haven't heard but is
  394. supposedly fairly primitive compared to the work he's doing now. Then he
  395. seemed to kind of disappear from the scene for a while. The second, La Nuit Ou
  396. J'Ai Dit Non, just came out recently on the Belgian label Lowlands and is a
  397. collage of various twentieth century classical fragments (including Henry,
  398. Subotnick, Wuorinen) stitched together to form one seamless whole. One of my
  399. favorite records of the year so far.

  401. He also just put out two collaborative efforts on Ambiances Magnetiques, one
  402. with Rene Lussier and one with Ikue Mori and Diane Labrosse. I haven't heard
  403. either of these yet.

  405. I'd recommend checking Tetreault's work out for fans of Marclay or Otomo.

  407. I'm looking forward to.

  409. A few more quick Victoriaville thoughts:

  411. I've been to the last three and this was easily the most successful musically.
  412. My personal highlights included Tetreault, the Clusone Trio,
  413. Leimgruber/Crispell/Leandre/Hauser, and the Nihilist Spasm Band.
  414.  
  415. But the band that stole the festival was Doppelmoppel. Two trombones (the
  416. Bauer brothers), an electric guitar (the brillaint Joe Sachse, who I had never
  417. heard before), and an acoustic guitar (Uwe Kropinski). Unfortunately, the only
  418. records they've made are an out of print LP from 1981 and a superb FMP cd that
  419. was recorded in 1986. Hopefully, Victo will release the tape of this set.

  421. I didn't find the Zorn sets especially compelling. The Modern Chamber Music
  422. program was Music For Children, Dark River, Etant Donnes, and Duras. My
  423. impressions of this ranged from nice but unessential to downright aggravating
  424. in the case of the Duchamp tribute. The Zorn/Mori/Patton set I found enjoyable
  425. for a while, but Patton's ideas are few and far between and Zorn seems to have
  426. no middle range when he's doing free improv between long circular breathing
  427. solos and quiet, prettier passages. I found myself wishing for a more nuanced
  428. sax player and singer about twenty minutes in.

  478. "Snippettes", a limitededition of 250 copies. Besides this, he is also
  479. the member of the wonderful trio-
  480. Bruire, with M.F. Cote and Robert M. Lepage. They have several titles

  491. and Otomo.For the new CD on Audioview, he seems to change his style.

  493. abstract sounds. Unlike his early cut-up, plunderphonics works.

  522. I've probably got this first one, Des Pas et Des Mois.  I don't
  523. remember much about it, except that on one track he took three records
  524. and cuts them like pieces of a pie, then glued them together, one
  525. piece from each separate record.  Very similar to some of the tracks
  526. on the Marclay CD.

  567. Yeah, I've had this for I think going on 3 or so years.  I've not listened
  568. to it much, not for any real reason, I just forget that I have it.  What I
  569. can remember is that it's a spoken word thing, with prose centered around
  570. "being queer" and what that means to the author.  (perhaps, subconsiously,
  571. I was slightly put off by this)  There is interplay of the quartet along
  572. with generous helpings of sampling, most notably sounds from a gay pride
  573. parade.

  575. Now that I'm thinking about it, I really don't remember too much of this
  576. work, perhaps I'll have to go home tonight and give it another listen.  I
  577. let you know if I discover something cool that I may have missed or
  578. forgotten.

  620. And I am sure I will recommend the cd of improvisations of the Sharp and
  621. Frances-Marie Uitti as soon as I get to listen to it.

  634. made about the discs of Sharp you mention - except that I got to listen to
  635. them about ten years later.
