  37. I have to thank the guy, who recommended Ground Zero "Plays Standars" CD. Sorry
  38. for forgetting your name, I will bless you to the end of my life for this
  39. recommendation.
  40. The CD cost $20, but I could spend lots more for this kind of music. I was
  41. amazed from the first time I've heard this album: power, power, power, and -
  42. what is most important - it's played with true, fresh involvement of the
  43. musicians. You can hear that they give everything they can. Even comparing with
  44. over-intellectualized Naked City, Ground Zero is phenomenal, because they play
  45. with vigor, drive, punch, vitality, ardor and zip (add as many synonyms from
  46. thesaurus, as you can).
  47. BTW: can anybody who knows other Otomo activities recommend other works, similar
  48. to "Plays Standars"? The tracks I like most are these less-experimental, rocking
  49. ones (yeah, Ground Zero rocks!)
  50. And: thanks to Alan E. Kayser and his friend Craig - they know what for.
  51.  
  52. Other highlight is obvious: John Zorn "Circle Maker". Marvelous album, more
  53. oriental then last klezmeric (klezmatic?) records, a classic. PhiloZorners, be
  54. prepared for invarions of profanes, who will go crazy after listening to this
  55. album, and spam this list with questions like "I love _Circle Maker_, what sould
  56. I listen to next?".

  77. Hi. How come I feel like it's not spoken of Elliot Sharp over here ?
  78. Actually I've been on this list for a few weeks only but his name didn't
  79. appear once.
  80. Is there a separate E# list ? 
  81. He was playing last thursday in Brussels, a show I only heard of by chance,
  82. very obscurely announced, with the cellist Frances-Marie Uitti. They seemed
  83. to be promoting a cd of improvisations recorded in Amsterdam and Bern a few
  84. months ago. 
  85. Uitti was perfect. 
  86.  
  87. The Sharp was drowning under his machinery, obsessed with it, lost in it,
  88. litterally subject to it - not in control of his technique. Postmodern, the
  89. machine he launched has become friable. Actually the picture was one of a
  90. man trying to figure out how to make things work (how to get what he wanted
  91. from the machine and what would come out of the machine) but not concentrated. 
  92. I did not go to him during the breaks and ask what technical stuff he was
  93. using - merely delaying stuff and according to me sampling and
  94. transformations, playing back of his sound or of Uitti's - in loops or
  95. transformed into kind of percussion sounds. 
  96.  
  97. But what an interesting forehead he has, such interesting lines, a
  98. landscape... Standing there motionless, manipulating his computer from a
  99. control attached to his guitar - the music seemed to come and be shaped
  100. directly from his thinking. Some awkward maybe-fractal patterns of a drum
  101. machine, that's what it sounded like at times. 
  102. Sharp finally seemed to be experimenting his machinery more than his music,
  103. somehow trying to catch up with the development of his work. 
  104. Is a staff working for him building new machines, samplers and stuff ? 
  105.  
  106. Well these visions are just lines that crossed my mind. To be continued... 
  107.  
  108. I am just manifesting my presence here and curious - any reflection, any
  109. hint from one of you about what was going on and what is going with Sharp ?
  110. Or related reflections or experiences ? Sources ? 
  111.  
  112. Hey. Something else has been burning me for some time now. I've been
  113. wondering if there is somewhere a connection to be found between any of the
  114. topics we are dealing with here and Anthroposophy - or Theosophy. If any of
  115. you has the slightest or a peculiar indication in that sense, can he or she
  116. please email me ? Anyone involved with these ideas in some way ?

  130. Val Wilmer's "As Serious As Your Life" is a must read. Francis Davis' 
  131. "Outcats" and "Bebop and Nothingness" are well-written with good profiles. 
  132. And John Szwed's "Space Is The Place" is *the* book on Sun Ra.

  262. I just picked up the Corbett, based on this high recommendation, as well
  263. as Graham Lock's "Chasing the Vibration" (I already have his "Forces in
  264. Motion" and am rereading his "Mixtery"). The Jost book is quite good --
  265. its discussion of Cecil Taylor in particular has kicked some of my own
  266. composing into new directions (strangely, I get more musical ideas from
  267. reading about music than from hearing it...). Had I actually caught the
  268. Anthony Braxton performance at the Library of Congress Friday night
  269. rather than being stranded on the Beltway with a dead alternator for
  270. three hours, my mind would no doubt be spinning in yet other directions!

  294. Amiri Baraka has at least three books of interest to fans of
  295. African-American free jazz.  _Blues People_ is a seminal work on the 
  296. relation of music to the African-American experience written around
  297. the time free jazz was first emerging into the light of publicity;
  298. it doesn't focus on the new music, but it's there as a subtext, and
  299. the book arguably influenced a number of jazz avant-gardists.  _Black
  300. Music_, recently reprinted by Da Capo, collects articles from the early to
  301. mid-60's, and is nice as a blow-by-blow account of the New York energy
  302. scene of the day as it was actually happening, written by someone closely 
  303. involved with the scene.  _The Music_, published in the 80's, is another
  304. collection, including both journalism and poetry (and also, if memory
  305. serves, including work by Baraka's wife, Amini).  Baraka's critical
  306. listening is, in my opinion, sometimes obscured by ideological blinders,
  307. but he's usually thought-provoking, and nearly always a brilliant prose
  308. stylist.

  545. Anecdotal, a compilation of a bunch of interviews and short articles
  546. which originally appeared in various magazines (like Option, if I
  547. remember correctly).  It's interesting because there are so few
  548. interviews and information about most of the people he discusses, but
  549. the chapters tend to concentrate more on the people and less on the
  550. music.  I enjoyed the book, but it's a very quick read and left me
  551. hungry for more.
